Baldwin was sooo underrated in this movie. Leo got most of the acclaim, and rightfully so, he was masterful as Hughes. But Baldwin's portrayal of Tripp was simply sublime, a slimy, yet cool and in control businessman. Just perfect.
But also respectful. The best part about this scene is the end, where Tripp turns to Noah Dietrich (portrayed masterfully by John C. Reilly) and tries to persuade him to get Howard to settle. He tells him "America shouldn't see him like that. They should remember him for the man he was." GREAT SCENE. Well acted all the way around.
Seamus O'Leary Howard Hughes: “I have a terrible cold I don’t want to get you sick.” Juan Trippe: “You take care of that cold Howard.” Coronavirus has been wrecking havoc through the ages it seems.
"Do not press a desperate foe too hard. When a foe is cornered, they must fight for their lives and will do so with the energy of final fear. If you force them to go down in a blaze of glory they will do so."
Many like to mock Hughes for his many phobias, mental Illnesses, and addiction to prescription medicine, not realizing that Hughes’s greatest achievement was how much he was able to achieve in spite of his many phobias, mental illnesses, and having to live in chronic pain. Most people would have killed themselves and never achieved at all.
I love this scene but it never happened. The Senate hearings occurred in 1947, and Hughes didn't lock himself away in the screening room until the late 50's.
Hughes adds, "I won't sell TWA! I will run you bankrupt if I have to, any means possible! You can't stop me, I had been left for dead in the Titanic, only to return, I built up TWA, and I will take down Pan Am, just watch me!" And then he goes and forges two million in fake Pan Am cheques.
0:32 - That statement always bothers me. The share price is irrelevant without knowing the number of shares outstanding. TWA could be worth ten times Pan Am even if its share price is half that of Pan Am's, simply because there are more shares of TWA than of Pan Am. Presumably, Trippe knows the market cap of both companies, but his statement doesn't make any sense.
Today: Most people under 30 have never heard of Pan-Am or TWA, but entire global networks are still powered by Hughes satellites and their drill bits are still the industry standard for the petroleum industry.
I went to the McMinnville museum and since my uncle is in the air force they let us into the cockpit and I actually got to sit there at the pilot seat. It really does deserve the name Hercules.
wrong! Alda is hilariously sleazy, and perfectly hateable. id be fine with both getting nominated but theyd cancel each other out. At least Alda had a chance
Imagine though, if Trippe actually succeeded in buying out TWA, his company might still be alive today. They would have had the domestic routes to remain solvent. Considering Pan Am never had domestic routes, it's a wonder they remained competitive. Did they post higher revenues than TWA?

The way I see it is that they did not really understand Hughes' idiosyncrasies and his own particular hierarchy of needs. Yes he had OCD; a compulsion for everything to be organized and sanitized but his need to win was pathological, the overriding factor in his life.
OCD is not always a need for organization and sanitization. OCD can take on many forms depending on the afflicted. I’m clinically diagnosed myself and my room has plates and bowls in it.
I believe that The Aviator in particular was filmed with special filters so as to give it a retro film look. It's especially apparent during the golf scene, where the grass appears blue.
