It always looked to me that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber did not like David's performance, but I thought it was great. Definitely do not agree with Simon on this one, but he was the only judge I respected because he never sugarcoated his remarks and tried to always tell the truth. It's just his opinion anyway, but David did an excellent job singing this song and I really liked the changes he made to the version that Andrew composed.

Simons comment tells us that David is a true star. He said it was perfectly pleasant (read: good and well sung) but it wasn't his best performance. same thing with David Cook, both of them are great singer but I'm sure a lot of fans would agree that during that night, Jason Castro's "memory" was the best vocal, you can feel it's coming from the heart when he sang it and coolest version I ever heard. It was not pitchy and powerful voice, but was so pleasant to hear than any other performer that night. Too bad because of the "Tambourine Man", he got voted off soon.

I think Paula nailed it ... Turning a song that was written for the theater into a completely different style deserves praise for the risk David took in doing it that way. Even David himself said singing it back to such an outstanding composer in a style so completely different from the way it was written would have to be nerve-wracking. Sir Andrew said it: When that happens, we should all be saying "Bravo!"
I know there are die hard ALW fans out there and theyre probably just astonished but if you can appreciate opera, then you can appreciate other types of music as well and the ppl whop make those songs that ppl who arent opera fans. Anyway Simon said this was David's weakest performance, and while I do think David didn't demonstrate the full strength and beauty of his voice in this performance, it DID becomre one of his most memorable ones! -Even to this day, over a decade later, I absolutely long to hear David sing this song!
