    What lessons has the Camino taught you? Or what do you hope to learn, if planning your first Camino?

    • @andrewyoung8604

      I am planning my first Camino, at age 65, coming from California, this Spring 2022 if at all possible. I suppose another Camino, like the Portuguese, or del Norte. But I don’t yet possess the full meaning of my obsession to walk it. So far, I think the greatest reward or things to learn will be from being within a community of people who want to experience something different, and have, like lesson #1 from you, Rob, stepped off the treadmill and are ready and open to inner growth as well as testing their humanity. Thank you Rob for your insights and work here.

      If you feel 'called' to walk the Camino. Just go and walk. With no expectations at all. And see what happens. 🙂

      @@robscamino I have been wanting to do this walk since 2018 and I was planning for 2020...so now I am thinking 2024. Do you have or could you do a video on how you plan the actual getting there and back home. That is the part that has me a bit on edge. It'll be my 1st Camino and I'm considering El Camino Ingles.

    On Camino everybody is vulnerable, everyone is outside their comfort zone. It’s a long journey with a common goal, irrespective of how you plan to achieve it. I think that is at the core of why Camino is special.

    I totally agree with you Rob. I covered about the same lessons learned in a conference I did on the Camino Frances, last week.
    There is an expression I also like to use: Do not measure the accomplishment of a day in km, but in the number of new friends you have just meet.
    Keep the good work !

    Hello and thank you Rob. I am 58 and going on my 1st camino in early June. 18 great pieces of advice. Being open and relaxed will be the most challenging for me. #2 resonated with me the most because I am going for personal, spiritual, and even religious reasons. BUen Camino!

    Hi Rob, Love your life lessons and agree with them totally. #14 about not going too fast, I was criticized by a few people for walking too fast, and joked about at times for getting to our accommodation first. Speed and “getting there” was never my objective, I’m just naturally a fairly brisk walker. Possibly due to 10 years in the Australian Army, or maybe it’s just my DNA, but walking slowly is something I find very hard to do (unless looking for something I’ve dropped 😂). So I’d say to people, on this one, a repeat of one of your earlier lessons “don’t judge”, you never know why people do what they do. Yes some will walk quickly because they want to be first, or they set themselves objectives they feel they must meet, and others like me walk more briskly because that’s their comfort speed. They’re not trying to impress anyone, they’re just doing what comes naturally.

    By the way if you look into what the pilgrims did in the middle ages when they started to go to Santiago de Compostela: some travelers went there by foot, others by horse, others by driving some kind of chariot etc…so since most people forgot also that they had to have courage because these roads could be dangerous in many ways, they could get robbed, killed or seriously injured…it took so much faith for them to do this…and most people travelled in groups, some of them taking as much as a dozen people to have a better chance of survival and getting their in one piece… so we need to look for all these stories so we can be kinder to ourselves

    Rob, your the best. Retired last year and decided to do the Camino. Over the last 8 months, you have answered my questions and calmed my fears. At 76, I wasn’t sure I could do it. But my plane leaves April 30. Thanks to you for making it possible in my mind. Don

    Hi Rob, Beautiful things happen on the Camino, I wanted to see the Botafumero swing, so I went to 3 services, but at one, a group of people, who had a Black Madonna Flag, danced down the Cathedral aisle, wearing white clothes with a red sash, and two lines of people were playing Castanets, who would twirl around as the crossed the aisle, plus other musicians playing flutes, and some beating drums, it was beautiful, filling the Cathedral with music, which bounced off the 800 year old walls, I was full of joy, - it wasn't what I wanted, but more than I could have hoped for. I was watching a video about near death experiences ... and it struck me that these are the kind of lessons that people say they come back with. I think this is why you're so addicted. It's transformational, clearly.
    I had to watch this three times because your voice is nicely soporific and kept falling asleep halfway through - in a good way!!

    Great advice as always Rob, my greatest lesson from the camino is always appreciate a great shower, even the ones with low pressure or a tight squeeze always feel great after a days walking it's the highlight of the day 😁 it's the simple things that matter on the camino

    I have learnt so much from my camino walks. I have realised in Australia I dont need: $35 breakfasts, $100 vaccum cleaners, and thousands on brand new clothes and stuff etc. What I do need though is a camino every other year or so to recharge the internal battery.

    • @robscamino
      @robscamino  3 роки тому +1

      Very true. I threw out most of my clothes as I don't use them. I drive a 21 year old car that I still really like. 'Stuff' has become rather meaningless. I'd rather spend money on 'experiences' and on others.....

    I'm planning a Camino in September 2023, when I retire. Listening to this video, I realize that you've summed up the wisdom I've learned through my travels in India and my many 10-day silent meditation retreats. I don't travel to India any more, and I don't attend meditation retreats, and I miss the many lessons I've learned in those two ways. Sounds like the same life lessons are waiting for me on the Camino.

    • @robscamino
      @robscamino  2 роки тому

      I'm sure the Camino is many things to many people. For me it's like walking meditation...... Or I sometimes refer to the Camino Frances as my 800mk long church...

    • @bethjay5225
      @bethjay5225 2 роки тому

      Yes, I too would see it as a walking meditation. I've done walking meditation as a formal Buddhist practice, though I don't think I would be thinking of the Camino in that way. But who knows? The Camino will provide the questions and the answers in more than one way, I'm sure.

    "Even small steps taken towards a goal will get you there." Very true. Doing long journeys on foot or bicycle really teaches that lesson. I liken it to chopping down a large tree with an axe. Every strike of the axe helps. It also helps to break big challenges - mentally - into smaller chunks that you take on one at a time, so for example, it is easier to set out in the morning thinking that you are walking to the first cafe two hours away than to think you are setting out for the final destination: Santiago. If you do the latter, you will be overawed by the mammoth distance. I do miss the Camino. I hope if and when I do it again, I will have greater time so I can do a longer length of the journey and have the luxury of doing shorter days from time to time so as to enjoy more time with fellow walkers.

    Rob, I’ve fallen in love with your channel. I did my Camino in 2014 and haven’t stopped thinking about it. I had planned to return (doing it in thirds) in 2020 and then Covid-19 happened. (To your point on this video, I’ve learned and experienced a lot of unexpected gifts during the isolation). I hope to return soon. Your videos are thoughtful, well done and inspiring. Thanks so much! Just saw an Italian guy doing the VdlP in October this year ... I think you will need all of your lesson pack. It seems really sparse in places for support, rustic, and a long, long way. Have a good trip and I reckon Aussies will be ok going to Spain next year after May... well hope so.

    Is there a Camino De Santiago that you can recommend for people who cannot walk more than 15 kilometers per day? Is it possible to have room and board for people like me that cannot walk 25 kilometers per day?

    • @robscamino
      @robscamino  2 роки тому

      Yes indeed. The one with the most infrastructure is the Camino Frances, so that might suit you best. How far do you want to walk? And do you want to end in Santiago?

    Rob - in a previous video you mentioned the little external microphone you use with your iPhone when recording. In the reviews, many people didn’t like the app that was mandatory nor having to pay for the app. Are you still happy with that external microphone or have you found a better version.
    Thanks.

      Hi Fran. I just use a simple plug in 'wired' mic from Rode. It doesn't require an App. I'm not sure why a mic would require an App? Maybe if it's bluetooth........ I prefer simple. Bluetooth uses power and could fail. A cable doesn't 🙂 This is the one I use. I have bought loads of them over the years, as I give them to my team at work to make business videos. You should find them online on any good site. The makers Rode don't sell direct to the public. All my studio mics are also rode! I love Rode! en.rode.com/microphones/rodelinklav

      Just a tip, that any video pro will tell you. (I'm not claiming to be one!). Good sound is almost more important that good visuals. Viewers might put up with a shaky camera, or poor lighting if the topic is interesting, but are not that engaged if the sound is bad......
