Now, this is the best explanation I’ve heard of why things can go sideways with spoolgun welding. Funny that you mentioned running through a lot of tips - been there done that! Glad I found this video!
Thanks Jody! I just got my first welding apprentice job doing aluminum mig and tig (4043 .035 on some 6061 aluminum) and the welders at the job rave about you and your videos. Thank you for this, it's gonna help me get better!
We recently got a pair of push-pull guns for our multimatic machines at my job. we never could have completed the big aluminum job on time without them.
I welded 11 years on tanker trucks and other fab with a Cobramatic...super machine,I'd burn up spools of aluminum wire .Ended up with metal fume fever and aluminum poisoning of the lungs.Make SURE you vent properly and KEEP YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE FUMES!
Thanks Jody I'm looking into a spool gun now the different types and which ones have less birds nests, or the easiest one to clear when this happens. Looking forward to your next video.
Great video Jody.Your videos never get boring.I recently bought a machine that does single and double pulse MiG.. Definitely can get some killer looking aluminum beads, but it is real finicky to get some good settings .
Thanks Jody very informative. I did a bit of aluminum mig some years back using a Tweco torch with a teflon liner...the bird's nests were the problem a spool gun would have been great if they were available 😂
I'd go with the bigger of the two in case you want to play with spray transfer in the future. I have a 210 amp machine and sometimes wish I had a little more power for the thicker stuff.
Great video! I wanted to get a spool gun for my Millermatic 211. I want to be able to repair aluminum boats what is your thoughts on this?? I haven't bought the gun as of yet??

Jody, you have the best arc shots of anybody out there. Thank you.

Always great info thanks.
"Tig might be more fun, stacking dimes might be more fun, but making money is more fun than that" 😀
Thanks for the video. Im looking at either the Mig180 or the 285 and adding a spoolgun. Cant decide yet.

An excellent information TKS
Good video… you didn’t mention what your final settings were.
Maybe a dumb question considering your running near/at spray transfer: can you downhand alumium?
Thanks!
Lol i welded a 3 ft long, 5.5 inches deep tunnel in a john boat with spool gun when i was 16
Having enough amperage is everything
He looks like the guy over at weldingtipsandtricks older brother....;-()
