During two Italian hillclimbs (Alpe del Nevegal and Verzegnis - Sella Chianzutan) I was able to record a very loud Renault Megane Trophy V6 race car. The car is moved by a Nissan 3.5L V6 engine which is able to produce 400 bhp at 7200 rpm and a max torque of 422 Nm at 5750 rpm.

Changing to v6 is strange, trying to make f1 environmentally friendly is like trying my to make fire cold.
***** there's not just one kind of "push innovation". F1 always did a good job in that regard. They should just concentrate on pushing the limits performance wise, not (only) efficiency wise. There's already WEC doing exactly this with success as it makes much sense to be efficient when endurance racing. But introducing bullshit like a fuel flow limit and so strict engine regulations that the maximum output that makes sense is well below 1000hp in the fastest sprint race series on this planet doesn't.
Still, this is complaining about first world problems. If anyone has seen the last race, even a partially misregulated series can produce thrilling races. This and the plans for 2017 (goal to be 6 seconds (!) faster per lap, way less team communication and telemetry as already starting at SPA this year, less aero and more mechanical grip,...) make me hope and keep watching F1. :)

Perhaps they should make Rule like Prototypes had in GroupC. Give them a Fuel limit, some senseful aero limits and a good weight limit like 500 - 550kgs (702kg is much too heavy!). No (or not so strict) fuel limits in Qualifying and let them build what they think it's the Best. This series would be good, the engines efficient (Otherwise you arent able to finish) and would have a high technical diversity (perhaps allow AWD). Imagine a Formula Car with 1300hp in Qualifying that has got a 3LiterV8 Turbo. That would be fantastic.
Or we could Go back to the 3 Liter rules of the 70s
