What a great show! They don't seem to do that kind of thing anymore. What a shame. Fitzgerald and Previn are two colossal talents and seeing them together is a real treat.

Ella has been quoted as saying “The only thing better than singing is more singing.” I would say that the only thing better than Ella is more Ella.

This is call natural raw talent. She never took a singing lesson, was just blessed with this talent. Today’s generation only knows singers who need auto tune to be able to sing.

Fitzgerald and the trio perform the following songs: "Lady Be Good" (in two versions, one rousingly uptempo and one in a slow ballad style); "I'm Just a Lucky So And So"; "I Won't Dance"; "Hard Hearted Hannah"; "Glad To Be Unhappy"; "They Can't Take That Away From Me"; and "It's All Right With Me." At the conclusion of the program, Previn accompanies Fitzgerald on the piano for an improvised song featuring Fitzgerald's extemporized lyrics recounting the evening's events, followed by a hushed reading of "Like Someone in Love."

Does anyone have any idea what the introductory music (first 30 seconds or so) of this video is? I'm wondering if it's from an existing piece, or if it was specially composed for this purpose.

In researching episodes of this program, I came across a "letter to the editor" in a newspaper that asked this very question. The answer from WQED was that Previn composed the motif himself especially for the program, and (at least ~1978) it did not exist in any other form.

Which "Snake Hips" is Ella referring to? Earl Snake Hips Tucker ua-cam.com/video/1BsXgXUI9bo/v-deo.html or Ken “Snakehips” Johnson ua-cam.com/video/SA9mFVnKK5Q/v-deo.html Boh are from the period she speaks.
