You can tell how lovely it is by how many times he runs his finger and thumb along the length of the blade.
This is actually a proven, scientific way of measuring the loveliness of a knife blade.
Rumour has it that Sylvester Stallone is still lovingly looking after his bowie knife the same way, even more than 40 years later.

Spartan is stellar as a EDC. If having thin/flimsy pants in the summer, the Waiter model is even slimmer, and still got that opener and screwdriver + wire stripper. Have had Victorinox in my pocket every day since the 1970s. Use it daily. Sad everytime they get stolen or breaks. Then one always goes directly to a store and buys a new one, or two ;)

I get why the Spartan is so popular (Vic quality for a low price) but in my opinion a good EDC SAK also comes with scissors, even if those models are more expensive. An EDC knife is for long term use so you might as well save up some more money to get all the possible functions you need during the day (and who doesn't need scissors from time to time?). The Spartan seems good to have around at home though.
I agree about the number of layers: I have a 4-layer Huntsman and that's about the maximum number of layers I'm willing to carry (and even that can only go in my bag because of the weight). 2 layers are the perfect sweetspot: great for pocket carry while still having enough functions.
The black scales can make any SAK look more elegant than the red ones. I'm also thinking about getting those plus scales in black for my Compact.

      Hey Mike 👊
For me, everything is possible - if you know how to go about it.
I'm sure someone may have tried this method already...
However, I wouldn't recommend it, as there is no 'flange', so you would have to probably modify a needle, to do so, to optimise the fit.
Moreover, as the underneath of the pin head acts as a 'stop' and the SAK is designed for its intended purpose, just go with the original Pin, which can be purchased separately 😉

If you have large hands then folding out the screwdriver gives some grip extension for your pinky when using the main blade. Try it, really does make quite a difference. Makes it feel like a much larger knife. Also works well with the 84mm knives. Btw this exact sak in black was the first one I bought & then I bought another as they were on offer. So I have to blame this Spartan that I then bought about anther 10 different Victorinox s far when originally all I meant t do was replace my old Wenger Commander that had been a present 30 years ago and I'm still using the Wenger for any nasty jobs after jamming a pin nail into the loose spring to keep the main blade open properly. Ok off to buy another sak as need to try out one of the torch mini models.

I think the knife tip about the screwdriver genuinely is good as you will see when you try. I can't decide between a Spartan or a Pioneer, can you give me an advice on it? Thanks

    • @gadgetgus
      @gadgetgus 2 роки тому +1

      Good question...
It all depends on what you shall be doing with your EDC & location - so if your in an urban environment and feel the need for a second blade (Which is always useful), this can be used to open packages 📦 etc... which prevents tape adhesive getting on the main blade, helping keep your main blade sharp.
Also, if you feel the need for a corkscrew (+ Micro Screwdriver, if you wear glasses), toothpick & tweezers, then the Spartan is a very good choice.
*Also consider the 'Climber' or the 'Super Tinker' as they both have scissors + the 'Tinker' has a Phillip's Screwdriver too - all which is especially especially useful in urban areas.
However, if you live in a rural area and/or you work with your hands, then the 'in-line' Awl is a fantastic, versatile tool on the Pioneer. The tools on the Alox are stronger and more robust.
If you don't need the Awl, then consider the Alox Cadet.
*If you are often in an urban & rural area then consider the Alox 'Pioneer X'.
Hope that helps and let me know which one you choose 😉
      All the best,

    • @gadgetgus
      @gadgetgus 8 місяців тому +1

      Hey buddy 👊
I disagree... to have scissors ✂️ is a real bonus and gives extra functionality, for sure 👌
However, you don't necessarily need scissors, as you have a knife, which covers general everyday requirements, and moreover can be used as an alternative, but scissors can not do what a knife can do...
      ⬇️
The knife is the original cutting tool and did tasks that scissors do today, hundreds of years before, scissors were even invented and used in town & country or the city.
However, scissors are very convenient and extra safe to use, so I also often carry them in an urban environment.
I quite often carry the Spartan or even more so an 84mm version, like the Sportsman or Tourist when in the city, as I know how to use a knife safely and use it, to do a 'scissors' job, if needed.

You make a fair point, but I would never switch them out that much 😁
As I'm not a collector as such. I allow myself to have 10, one for each day of the week and 3 specialist ones for Bushcraft and outdoor use.
I have a few channel knives that I keep for comparison in my reviews and any others I regularly give away to my subscribers.
      ⬇️
If I were only allowed to choose just one SAK, then I would go for the Huntsman or Ranger, as I'm an outdoorsman.
However, if I had to live in the city all my life, then I would opt for the Fieldmaster, Explorer, or Handyman, I guess.
And if I lived in the suburbs, in between worlds, I would try to get two, like the Climber or a Pioneer X for urban and have another in my vehicle to switch out when I'm outdoors, like the Camper or the Farmer.

I have 15 Spartans in my collection, 10 are decorative scaled collectable ones & about the only one that I carry as part of my EDC is a SilverTech scaled one with a SwissQlip attached, 4 others which are not collectable models are all fitted with Plus scales ( black, white, ruby & sapphire blue scaled ). I have not considered buying the black onyx model because of its price yet I buy collectable limited edition Pioneers & Pioneer X's which are just as pricey! go figure!

@@gadgetgus I am a self-confessed SAKA - Swiss Army Knife Addict. It started when I was about 8 as a schoolboy growing up in London, as soon as I was trusted with a key to the door I was given a 58mm Red Classic by an uncle as my keyring knife & by the time I was 10 I had saved up enough pocket money to buy an economy model ( no scale tools ) red 84mm Bantam, I went through & number of both types of SAK's over the decades, today I still have a 25 year old red 58mm classic & a 45 year old 84 mm Bantam which I carried in my pocket everyday to & from work for 34 years ( as well as having Cadets, Pioneers, Climbers & Huntsman etc for weekend carry ) - both retired from use & the Bantam with new black scales which I put on it 2 years ago. My other knife of note back in London was an original Buck 110 Folding Hunter, I bought it when I was 16 but a few years later I gave it to a cousin who had moved to the countryside. I currently have almost 170 SAKS ( Victorinox, Wenger & Swiss Buck ) of which around 100 are 58mm sized & around 90 of them are decorative scaled collectables , 35 other collectables of various sizes , 6 home tool kit multilayer Vics & Wenger & around 30 EDC rotational SAK's from 58mm to 111mm size. My daily carry is always 2 knives - till recently my default key ring carry was for the last 5 years a red scaled 58mm Midnite Manager & now its a hybrid 58mm SilverTech scaled Midnite Mini-Champ & this I back up with a rotational larger knife which I choose according to my perceived needs on any given day . In my current rotation I have a 74mm Executive , some 85mm EvoGrips - the 14, S17 & S18, a Swiss Buck Trekker & an Odessy, a 84mm Sportsman & a Tourist, several different scaled 91mm Climbers & Huntsman, 93mm Pioneer X's & Farmer X, 2 layer 111mm Picnicker, Nomad & Garant & a 3 layer 111mm Rucksack - the largest SAK that I pocket carry ( I have the 111mm 4 layer Outrider & 130mm Ranger Grip 79 - but keep them for an emergency situation ) in addition I include in my EDC rotation a Civivi flipper liner locking knife - the Elementum, Ortis & Badlands Vagabond and I have several Schrade Old Timers & Uncle Henry lock blade knives & my 4 Buck knives - the classic Buck 110 Folding Hunter, 110 Folding Hunter LT , the classic Buck 112 Ranger & the 112 Ranger Slim Select. In short I am spoiled for choice & apart from my 58mm keying knife I frequently rotate the 2nd knife & occasionally carry a 3rd knife ! Such is the nature of my addiction!

@@stevesinclair4159 Thank you so much, for such a detailed insight, into your wonderful collection, I am truly humbled that you took the time to share that with me 🙏
That is probably the longest and certainly one of the best comments, I've ever had 🥳
Moreover, I relate to your upbringing, by saving up for the next one with your pocket money - I've also done that on many occasions 😁
I'm also a SAKA... be it on a milder level, as I only have a fraction of your amazing collection my friend.
One day, it would be great to actually visit the factory 🏭

Gadget gus I agree but I don’t like plastic scales if any it’s got to be jelly red or better still walnut scales and must have the excellent saw for my carving Brian from carving is fun day steel is below what you need for carving but I not see an issue mine are like razors have to be for carving and a blunt knife is dangerous felix immler on UA-cam is very knowledgeable dude with saks and Chris lubkemann got me into carving with his books highly recommend atb dude 👍🐾🦊🇮🇹🇨🇭

I hear you buddy, in urban areas - for sure... ✂ are a great option. I always rotate my daily EDC depending where I will be and what I'm doing.
I had a compact years ago and have only recently acquired another. I generally put black scales on when in urban environments, as it's a little more classy & understated...
