This episode is a favorite of most buffy fans. But the real reason it came about was critics said Joss didnt have anything more than his witty dialogue. He wanted to prove them wrong.
Critics; "Joss Whedon is nothing without his snarky dialog."
Joss: "Hold my beer."
And he got the story idea from having a nightmare.
Lmao, love the Gentlemen applauding and the Leader being like "Oh, stop...."
The leader is so humble with his talents.
Doug Jones is the best
Internally they have such healthy dynamics: applaud each others' accomplishments, modest enough to not let the praise get to their heads, they're good at teamwork and they understand how and when to delegate parts of the work. A real shame they use their powers for evil.
Fun fact: For the [creepy] monsters of that episode, they hired mimes! Like, actual mimes! Hence why they are so good with physical movements and stuff! And also why they are so creepy! :p
Well the main two were in mime school for a long time but he also acted as many different monsters. I think the main one is the same guy as the shape of water creature.
@@daddybendover69 it is. His names Doug Jones, he's also in Hocus Pocus, Hellboy and a bunch of others. He's one of my favourite actors. My first nightmare and my first film crush were characters he played.
The lead one plays another Buffy monster too
Nobody deserves mime, Buffy.
I think he was in one of the "Lord of the Rings" movies as well!?! @@HaloOverOurDemise
Oh, Shannan... don't diss the zig zag hair part. It was massive in the 90s! LOL
FAX
Who else recognised that the music Giles plays in the lecture theatre is "Danse Macabre" by Camille Saint-Saens, which was used as the theme tune to Jonathan Creek, in which Tony Head had a recurring guest role until he had to give it up when he was cast in Buffy?
11:37
Buffy getting offended by the drawing that Giles made of her always cracks me up.
🤭😆🤣
Apparently it was based on sarah's reaction to the drawing.
So many great scenes in this one. Buffy jerking it accidentally. Riley smashing the wrong item and then looking super proud of himself. Definitely an amazing episode.
Fun fact : In France, the voice actress who dubbed Olivia (Giles girlfriend) was the same that have dubbed Jenny in season one and two.
Ouch! That brings sad memories(?)
*TARA!!!* Literally my favorite fictional character of all time. Definitely related to her A LOT when I first watched the show, pretty much instantly.
This episode is a huge favorite among the fandom for obvious reasons. 100% deserved those award nominations.
Same. Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks so highly of Tara. 💜
She's in Top 3 most annoying characters of Buffy
@@shapeshifter7676 I'm compelled to ask why?
@@bipstymcbipste5641 It's mostly the way she talks. kinda like how Ross says "hi". Every time she says something I wanna kill myself.
@@shapeshifter7676 i can kinda see it. I like Tara though
Copied from the blocked video...
I remember Joss Weedon saying he had made fun of mimes before, but the actors doing the Gentlemen were on top form throughout. With everyone gushing about the wordplay in the scripts, he did this one with only 15 mins of dialogue and it was superb. You are absolutely right about filming silent actors. It takes a lot to get a point over with just facial expressions. Alyson Hannigan had that in spades here. She could have made it big in silent movies.
An interesting point, made by _Passion of the Nerd:_ Buffy and Riley haven't been communicating properly. When the talking didn't get in the way, they could express their feelings. Yet at the end, with their voices back, they still have trouble saying important things to each other. They are still "hushed".
Love Passion of the nerd, he has such an impressive insight to every episode. Just wish he was a touch faster in making his videos.
Actually, that point was made by Joss Whedon himself on the commentary track of this episode. The insight came purely from him.
4:18 the zig-zag part trend was huge in the 90’s and early 2000’s... my hair is parted this way in my senior pictures 😊
Remember the guy in a dorm room that got his heart ripped out? Im not surprised no one wants to open their door to tara.
Yeah, and the news said that Sunnydale was being forced to quarantine because of the mysterious "laryngitis".
Yes! One of my all-time favorite episodes of any TV show - and not blocked!!
"I don't have a dirty mind" 🤣🤣🤣
It's very interesting how your reactions are like a one-person microcosm of the general audience's reactions at the time, particularly regarding Riley and Spike.
"They got teeth that go on for days!" "I'm a big girl I'm not scared!" "Get it away from me!" 2 damn adorable yo!
Fun fact the inspiration for the Gentlemen came from a nightmare Joss had. Also the whole theme of this episode is communication quite often language can get in the way of real communication so words get misinterpreted so when you can't communicate through language you have to communicate what you truly feel. In the words of Joss "when you stop talking you start communicating"
I love how she already hates Riley. Same girl.
Let me introduce Tara ... she becomes ... important that’s all I’ll say
This was the first of the 3 "dare" episodes. The dare for this one was to make an episode with little to no dialogue. All 3 considered by most to be some of the best of the series - period. Another one's in Season 5 and the 3rd's in Season 6 I believe, but I won't go into them at all until you're there.
Jaer Nihiltheus I would consider there are 2 more episodes
Restless and CWDP
The body, no music (maybe the best episode) and OMWF, that would be my two?
"Normal" was a bit of a dare as well, no? Not sure. It was still amazing.
Jaer Nihiltheus could you confirm which are the dare episodes now cause I’ve never heard of this before
@@kamronspencer4910 I would guess it's the no background music at all in The Body, and the musical Once More With Feeling.
I love how Anya is just eating popcorn for the presentation
She was my favorite
Oh, they "bond" alright.
They make each other com-plete 😉 😅
@@Lonii04 🤣🤣🤣
Ever since the first time I saw this episode, I always thought the Gentlemen were oddly adorable, like their behavior and the way they move.
Funny thing is if this was made today, there wouldn't be a problem with no voices... we would just be texting each other. Not much different. Lol
We had phones and text messages in 2001
@@michaelrussell3890 yes I know. I have been around since before mobile were a constant thing. I remember when they were JUST phone. But there not used in the show. If this was made today, it would be considered stranger if they didnt. That's all I meant.
Why did I watch this at 3 am before having to walk to my car to go to work. This episode always creeps me out. Time to wake up the hubby to watch me go out there! Lol. Thanks for the reaction! Loved it!
hahahaha, "she has someone to bond with now", this show was/is brilliant
Giggity
Gotta love that dude selling message boards. 😂
Now thats a go-getter!
I'm not sure who's worse, The Gentleman, or Doctor Who's The Silence or Doctor Who's The Weeping Angels.
The Grntlemen are the scariest of all Buffy monsters imo.
Lol Tara's zig zag parting was Highly Fashionable at the time.
Yeah the whole cast have talked about how they thought this would be the easiest episode to shoot cause of not speaking. But afterwards they admitted it was the hardest thing they ever had to do because of how much energy that you really have to put into it.
The Gentlemen were definitely every bit as creepy and terrifying as Der Kindestod, the main difference being that the Gentlemen were in an episode that was spectacularly good, whereas Der Kindestod, not so much (the main thing I love about Killed By Death is Cordelia's comment about the uselessness of tact)
12:20 - Of course no one would open, the night just before, 4 people get their heart ripped of for having open the door.
Not sure if you remember her but Tara was Lenore the vampire on Supernatural.
Perhaps the best episode of the whole series. Gentlemen are really scary and unsettling villains, perfect from every point of view.
Buffy and Riley have unmasked each other in a truly epic scene, as well as epic the final scream with which our "invincible superheroine" (cit by Modern Family) makes the heads explode to all the bad guys. Now it will be interesting to see how the Riluffy relationship will evolve, especially if the Initiative becomes the antagonist of the season.
Oh I forgot, well-loved Tara, one of the sweetest and most loveable characters in the series.
This for me was the one and only Buffy episodes that have me chills. The uncanny nature of gentlemen was more then anything on the show before or after they appeared, unnerving and silent. First time I saw this episode I jumped at the window scene, and imaged the gentlemen on the path outside my bedroom window.
I swear, Tim Burton would LOVE this episode! lol
Tara becomes one of the best characters on the show, she's a lot like Willow if Willow never made friends in high school. She and Will will be doin' plenty of bonding, they make each other stronger in ways ye can't even imagine at this point.😉
Tarais basically Willow without her vindictiveness and holier than thou attitude.
P.S. I do like willow
Spoilers...
Can't you just let reactors discover the characters for themselves instead of giving them a summary?
"WHAT DID YOU SMASH?!?!" That surely wouldn't be applicable twice!
Definitely one of the best Buffy episodes ever. And its been recognized as culturally significant because it marks the start of the first openly lesbian relationship in the history of US broadcast television history. Amber Benson's Tara was a wonderful addition to the show.
You Met TERA!!!! Yaa
Love this episode so much. So creepy.
I remember zig zag parts. That was such a late 90s thing. 😍
I completely understand, the gentlemen are the only monsters I've ever been able to take seriously and they scare me to hell. This is one of Buffy's best episodes and yeah, Reilly is really boring and not very likable.
Tara ur gonna like her
My daughter is always creeped out by The Gentlemen as well.
You scared little baby. Sending you hugs and kudos for watching this awesome episode.
This episode is about domestic sexual abuse. Think about it. Creepy men invading your bedroom, doing weird stuff to you, doing the hush-gesture and the only way to end it is to, well, talk.
It can be seen that way, but I think it's much more broadly applicable than that - any time something frightening and violent happens, and people choose not to speak up and not to act, even when they're in the position to do so, in order to protect themselves. And the way people exploit that fear (the guy with the small white boards, for instance, was reminiscent of the people who were out selling American flags after 9/11 at outrageous prices).
That's when Tara came😍
That scene with Willow and Tara make my gaydar boom!! 🤣
Is it bad that I still get the heebie-jeebies from these guys all these years later? BLEH!!! When she said, "I'm a big girl. I'm not scared." I was covered in goosebumps. DOUBLE-BLEH!!!
This is one my fav eps, Did I mention I love spike. Great reaction. See u in the next one.
One of my all time favorite episodes. Sooooo amazing and hilarious.
The scariest BTVS Ep ever
I've watched it already (like 3 times) and I'm busy right now. But leaving a "like" and watching it again as soon as I'm free!
"I need vicarious smoochies" sounded like "I need bi-curious smoochies" to me!
weird, it said UA-cam had uploaded this? was it them pushing this content creator or a bug in the system? :P I was looking for this, but it said UA-cam and not After Show Reaction like it always does
Ah the "oh holy crap" reaction of seeing the Gentlemen for the first time.
"conversate" xD I like this episode especially the witch moment of moving the machine in front of the door that was epic but the baddies never scared me like they scared a lot of people. idk i found them to be cool and funny more than scary. and riley is so cute.
Tara was the best character ever.
The gentleman are so creepy! 💀
fun fact: the idea for this episode came to Joss Whedon in a dream
I thought it was because people told him that the only good part of his writing was the witty dialogue so he decided to make this episode as a challenge
At 11:19, you did a Spike smirk. I saw it!
What the hell is a Spike smirk?
Hope you didn't have nightmares. You're a big girl.
So many good reactions to this. "They've got teeth that go on for days," so funny! I have to admit when you're really scared at creepy stuff, like The Gentlemen, I both feel for you and also really enjoy it at the same time. A conflicted guilty-pleasure.
My University in England didn't have a wicker group, that I'm aware of.
The Gentlemen clapping, so Joss.
"I don't have a dirty mind." Much evidence to the contrary.
Of course no one opened their door, last night 3 people who opened their door were murdered brutally.
Yay I'm so happy it got unblocked! I already commented before but I'll comment again
Bit of a nightmare on elm Street moment there lol. Love to see Buffy and gang take on Freddy. Think one girl is creepy what about a few of them. Spike aunya and xander has funny moment and Giles presentation and gang reactions and inputs are hilarious too lol especially Buffy part lol. Dirty minds lol
Josh needs to make this into a movie
This is the one that won the Emmy, right?
i love this episode so much!!
This was by far my favorite episode I still think about it to this day lol
So happy you got to this episode! Be prepared to fall in love with Tara, one of the Buffy-verse's favorite characters :)
This is realy a great Episode. I love your reactions!
Hahaha Spike's voice sounds like Herbert from Family Guy.
You mean when he’s imitating Anya’s voice. Yeah I can see that.
I just watched it end. I had to come back and watch the start again
Good reaction. Love this show.
This episode gave me nightmares as a kid 😂
11:05 - 11:22 I love your reaction and of course, you don't have a dirty mind ;)
6:54 - In a world...where there's no such thing as texting...
I know it's so weird! Like I remember being around 17 when this episode aired and I didn't know a single person who owned a cell phone lol it just wasn't a thing. Would be a different episode in this day and age.
"The Gentlemen" would have to knock out the local cell phone tower first.
Can you believe iPhone, the first widely used smart phone, has only been around for about eleven years? What did everyone spend all their time staring at before that?
Tv
@@victorsixtythree The computer. Lord knows the dial-up kept you there forever.
Your use of the word "pal" greatly amuses me.
So this show is 30% dream, don't you know? Lol
How come no one whispers in this episode?
Fantastic reaction!! xD
Giles got a happy ending. There I said it.
One of the highlights of S4 which was rather lack luster. Riley was the most boring bf ever. This episode set a record for being the longest that no words were spoken on a TV show. Only 17 minutes of dialogue was spoken.
11:45 - 11:47 SPOILER
Not yet...;"-(((
WTF....!? You say....😁😁😁
Of course you don't have a dirty mind! Neither do I!
YES
Loved this episode but weren't the biggest fan of tara? She bored me to death but I think that's just me in the entire buffyverse, everyone loved her and I didn't and still don't get it!
Spuffy? More like Bike.
Riley and Tara, the wallpaper paste characters. Dull and duller, in no particular order.
I like Tera, but I am of the belief that she wouldn't have worked in any other way. Everyone's love for Willow, and Hannigan's ability to make everything adorable made that character. Without Willow, she would be a boring character.
Nice writing trick. Before the viewers get a chance to learn Tara's name, we are emotionally invested. Of course we want her to escape from the Gentlemen. And then she's a much needed magic buddy for Willow. And that's how to introduce a character that will be a fan favorite.
@@MarieAnne. Yeah, the girl says, "Yeah, Tara?" When she mocks her and asks if she has a suggestion.
"Awww she's (Willow) got somebody to bond with now..."
Yeah, that's one way of putting it :)
They make each other com-plete 😉😅
They're probably....singing. They're probably singing right now.
@@Lonii04 I understood that reference
@@AscendedXSaiyan yeah ☺️ she's under her spell 😉
@@Lonii04 Gyahhhhhhhhhhhhhh whyyyyy did you have to bring that up :P
Great episode, glad it got unblocked. The main Gentlemen guy is played by Doug Jones, who has also played Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, the Faun and the weird eyeball hand monster in Pan's Labyrinth, and recently the fish monster in The Shape of Water and Commander Saru in Star Trek Discovery. He's tall and lanky and apparently doesn't mind sitting in a makeup chair for hours on end.
Nice! I didn't know that was him. He was also Silver Surfer in the second Jessica Alba Fantastic Four movie.
The only role I remember seeing Doug Jones in where he looks like "Doug Jones" was his cameo as "Pencilhead" in the film "Mystery Men."
Plus he was one of those creepy bounty hunters on Firefly.
He was on Angel too, i just don't remember where and when. He's another one whose done the Whedon-Hattrick.
That's not Doug Jones. That actor actually shows up a bit later in season 4.
My friend and I met Doug Jones at a comic book convention, he seemed really pumped to have a bunch of people wanting to meet him. My friend has a picture of him being lifted in the air in a bear hug.
I had a nightmare about this episode once. I had a random nightmare, but my brother woke me up from it (but I was still in the dream without realising it) and he asked if I was alright and just as I was about to say yes, I saw one of the gentleman in the corner of the room coming towards brother with a scalpel in his hand and I woke up screaming RUN to my brother and woke me up with my heart pounding in a cold sweat. One of the best episodes of the entire series 😂
Girl, zigzag hair parts were FIRE in the 90s/early 00s.
It’s called crimped hair I think.
@@russellward4624 nah, that describes a hair texture that was also mad popular at the time
"I don't know what day this was set on"
Buffy originally aired on Tuesdays. It doesn't normally matter, but you can assume Tuesday as a mild default.
reader away “Dawn’s in trouble, must be Tuesday..”
Oh wow, I didn't realize the full meaning of "Dawn's in trouble, must be Tuesday," having only watched the show on DVD. Like I got the joke, but not why Tuesday instead of any other day. Kind of a crack in the 4th wall there!
I had a nightmare about these guys a few months ago. Haven't watched Buffy since I was 13 and yet, they still pop up in my dreams and scare the heck out of me! But then again, the nightmare made me come back to the series and I guess I have them to thank for that so....*golf claps*
Joss actually came up with the design for the gentleman from his nightmare when he woke up he doodled it and wala his nightmare became an iconic episode
viola, not wala.
not even done watching but had to comment on how the episode sets up the idea of talking without truly communicating...like at 4:26 - "I get nervous and I start babbling...plus every time we talk I have to lie." Did I mention I love this episode?
EDIT: And Spike mocking Xander with "we never talk" at 5:15...
EDIT: 8:11 - "No babble getting in the way this time." EXACTLY.
EDIT: 19:00 - "Oh, and Buffy and Riley now know each other' secrets." Only after NOT talking. Same for Xander/Enya and maybe Willow/Tara?
