Purdue always finds a way to not win the title, at least in men's play. The Rick Mount-Herm Gilliam team was good enough to win. Joe Barry Carroll's team was quite good also. The Troy Lewis group in '88 was on its way to the final 4 and stumbled. I love Purdue. But I don't expect ever to see the Boilermakers win the men's title.
I honestly think the team we got this year is far better than that years team. Either way we don’t have much of a football team but man do we get spoiled with such a great basketball team.
College basketball and football will always have to be best fans. They know how to cheer. You got parents, siblings, best friends, students all screaming for there team.
In my 2nd year at Purdue. Energy hasn’t changed, lucky to be here with the current team too it’s crazy to watch them play and be apart of the legacy they’re gonna leave here.
Even my dad(been going to Syracuse bb games all over the country since the 90s) who recently went to his first game at Mackey said the energy and noise is unmatched. Illinois vs Purdue was the game, if you go watch the highlights Lance Jones hit a 3 right before a timeout was called and it sounded just like this vid😂
Mackey is the most insane place to play in the NCAA. You literally cannot hear anything when the crowd gets into it. Combine one of the best student sections in the country with the fact that the whole building is one big circular concrete and steel bowl, and you get sound levels that are hard to believe.
I love that the announcers just sat back and understood the fans are also part of the game commentary. Doubtful that CBS gave Verne and the other guy shit for not talking
Idk when this game took place and I don’t really care for college basketball but whoever Ohio States coach is should’ve been fired for not taking a timeout when Purdue started getting momentum and the crowd got into it letting Purdue go 3 pointer, steal, tough lay up that put them up, block, 3 pointer without calling a time out when you have all of them is criminally bad coaching I mean one player literally went on an 8-0 run and you didn’t call a timeout right away terrible
@@robertdavies3593 I’d agree with you if we were talking about some random nobody school but we’re talking about Ohio State there’s no reason for a coach to be that bad for that good of an athletic program especially in a sport like football or basketball
This Ohio State team ended up the season 34-3 and was ranked #1 in the final regular season poll. They did get upset in the S16 that year, but that's probably not a fireable offense. And the following year they made it back to the Final Four. But, spoiler alert, the coach did eventually get fired in 2017. If only he'd called that time out 6 years earlier maybe he could have saved his job...
I was at Purdue during the Glenn Robinson era there were many games we left and could not hear like going to a rock concert and standing right next to the speaker -Mackey can get Rockin
I was in attendance at this game, and it was THE loudest I had ever heard Mackey at this point and then again when JaJuan dunked it near the end of the game. What I notice now after watching it on screen is the defense of Kramer. He was like glue on whoever he guarded, and you don't see that defensive intensity from many guys anymore. Such a special team to me.
This is what's great about basketball. Football stadiums may seat 3 or 4 times as many people, but 20,000 people in a smaller, indoor arena can get so intense that it's just an amazing experience.
Seriously. You've turned the ball over three straight possessions and the opponent's made 3 straight buckets and the crowd is going nuts. How does Ohio State's coach not call a timeout?
As a Kentucky fan this kind of makes me sad. Rupp Arena is too big to get this like this and a lot of the fans just don’t get like this. Don’t get me wrong it’s been loud in there before just not quite like this
The home town boy John Diebler giving up the ball here lol. Won us a state championship in 2005. And finished his HS career with more points in an Ohio HS than lebron. Dude balled hard. 77 points was his highest I think. Got to watch him play. It was amazing.

I don't think he was "left speechless." It was more of a case where he recognized, "Less is more," and to let the crowd noise tell the story. Also, he probably figured it was pointless to try to talk while the PA guy was going off the way he was. This is something that Vin Scully was very good at. If you watch the video of Kirk Gibson's World Series Home Run.
