Nice video. The bearing size needed to replace the worm bushings is 3x6x2.5mm from memory. You’ll also need a 4x6x0.01mm shim between the rear worm bearing & worm retainer.
Thanks man glad you enjoyed it! And sweet did the bearing upgrades make a noticeable difference for you? Haha since this video I bought a caliper so I can just measure them all instantly 😁🤙🏽
@WhereWeWild I haven’t installed any yet, just been researching sizes and outcomes. From what I’ve heard the improvements are fairly minimal. I might still purchase a set and try them out when I open up the reel again. I agree with others on using pen grease in Shimano reels - way too thick and your adding increased resistance on what is a finesse reel.. I use ACE-2/DG-4 on my gears in my 3000 Vanford as I use in saltwater. You can go to ACE-0 if you’re fishing freshwater.
Cleaning dirty reels - if you had the cause to have to clean the components of a reel where it had been over greased a long time ago and the grease had solidified - would you use a solvent bath and if so what solvent would you recommend.
I honestly never have to that much on a reel. I usually just wipe everything out maybe in some cases use some WD40 to break up some old gunk and wipe it off. That works well. Every so often I’ll use an ultrasonic cleaner and some simple green mixed with water to clean parts, that might be a good solvent for you. 🤙🏽
Awesome video -- amateur question !! If i were to need to replace the bearings - are these specials Shimano bearings - or can i replace them with an aftermarket type from a quality bearing suppler as long as the size was correct. Thanks in advance. Simon
Hey thanks glad you enjoyed it! 👊🏽😊 You can get whatever bearings you like, as long as they are the correct size. I usually get mine from Boca Bearings. Light screeching? 🤔 Hmmm not really sure man, I only have one of them currently but since the new model just came out I will probably be getting another one when the old model goes on sale so I will find out! 😂🤙🏽 It’s an awesome reel.

Question, I just bought and returned my first Vanford 2500 because of handle play. I had them open up another one and it wasn't as bad, but still noticable. I was wondering if you noticed any with yours? Since it screws into the pinion gear I'm wondering if there's a tolerance issues with this batch of reels or a shimming issue. Because I was getting about 1/32 of play left to right / in n out of the reel body and about the same amount of play when reeling/wiggling back and forth.
Hmm. Think you mean the main gear. The pinion gear sits in the middle of the reel where the shaft runs up through it. I have the 3000, but there isn’t much play in the handle at all just a little in the knob.
@@WhereWeWild Oops, yes that's what I meant. I was thinking of it like a car's ring and pinion gears, but still got them mixed up lol! I thought the 3000 and 2500 have the same body, just different spools. So that's why I asked. Glad to hear your doesn't have excessive play. Also what type of fishing do you do with yours? I'm thinking of try a 3000 next time. But I mainly intend to use it for finesse bass fishing, so I don't know if I need the extra line
@@grayman5271 Yeah same body but the 3000 has the T shaped handle. I’ve used it for senkos, ned rigs, drop shots, little swimbaits, all finesse type stuff. Same weight as the 2500 (minus the line) so it’s really just if you like the T handle feel and or want more line on it.
Love the video... waiting for all those piece i'm missing to myself the maintenance of my reels! I'm curious tho.. how do you clean the paint brush after? I'll be using shimano star drag grease is it fine?
Thanks glad you enjoyed it 👊🏽😊 Ahhhh I just give it a good wipe off with a paper towel and keep the brush in a ziplock bag. I’m using the same grease on it every time ya know. Yeah sure shimano grease is good stuff 🤙🏽
@@Elezen514 It’s basically the same stuff as the penn blue grease I use, just reel grease ya know, it’s mostly for the gears on a reel ⚙️ and some other little places I show in the video where I put it. Bearings get oil. And the drag washers I use the cals drag grease. Everything is linked in the video description if you need anything 🤙🏽
@@WhereWeWild yeah had difficult time finding the penn in canada... bought a bottle of 1lb from the US lol... will use that for the gear and other stuff you did in the video and keep my shimano star drag grease for drag only :D PS: I might have to buy lucas oil too... since my ardent bottle doesnt have a "needle" applicator and i'll do a big mess without it
Every time i put grease on my carbontex washers it makes them slip too much and then i have to tighten the drag more than usual whch makes the drag action stick and them let go in an action which isnt smooth. I also use cals grease and just a tiny bit. So its interesting to see you use grease. I'm skeptical now and end up put them back in dry since i feel that they just work better that way.
Hmm that’s interesting man I never seem to have that problem 🤷🏻♂️ Running them dry is definitely going to give you the max drag, I just like a tiny little shine on them to help prolong their life is all. Sure you can see in this video how it’s just a tiny tiny tiny amount, don’t want it on their thick that’s for sure. Nothing wrong with running them dry if that’s how you like em. 😊🤙🏽
@WhereWeWild my only reels i haven't tried are my vanfords. Perhaps i should try again. I also used a very tiny bit in the reels i have tested. I tend to run my drags on the tighter side and i always wondered if thats what gives it the jerky action when greased.
@FishingEasternCapeSA Oh yeah maybe… I tend to keep my spinning reels set pretty loose because I’m using much lighter line and smaller hooks that don’t really need much force to stick em ya know? Can kind of just lean back on em if that makes sense. Also if it’s a big girl biting I like to know they won’t be able to break me off on the first turn hahaha 😎😁🤙🏽 My casting reels I tend to run more locked down.
@@WhereWeWild im actually the same as you, i dont actually put a lot of pressure, only initially to set the hook. im scared of pulling the hook out if its not hooked perfectly. I think i tend to really tighten when i need slow the fish down and tire it quicker. Else it takes forever. It's only really the big fish that test the drags i suppose. i feel i have more control over the carbon drags without grease, as if the grease tends to make the response more exponential rather than linear.
Hahaha yeah I was little nervous just because I’ve never done one haha and the schematic looked insane 😂 Not so bad though just have to really take your time and be gentle with it, some of those parts felt so delicate it’s crazy.

Hmm I haven’t messed with the anti reverse on this reel, but maybe search if there is a video specifically taking one apart? Before I did that though I’d make sure there are no other obvious problems when taking the reel apart before I opened up the actual anti reverse, like sand or anything out of place or broken that could be causing issues, it may be something way more simple causing the problem. It’s extremely rare that I ever have to take apart the anti reverse on any reel.
I just fixed it an hour ago. There are 6 springs inside of this anti reverse and 6 ball bearings. The springs need to be inserted with the small arm pointing towards the outer frame. In the end the other side of the spring has a longer arm. So here is where it becomes tricky. You might put the ball bearings in pushing the springs‘ longer arm to the right each which looks in the end more right then pushing the arms to the left. However, pushing them to the left is the right way to do it. Sorry for my bad English I am not native. Small mistake big consequences. 😊 thank you bro you helped me a lot.
