Leave it to a cinematographer to create a professional Squarespace ad for his UA-cam video haha. Best Squarespace ad I've seen. Such a cool breakdown on the insurance commercial too. I think a lot of people are curious what sets look like and all the ins/outs on a shoot day!
This video was great! It’s true that a cinematographers main work happens in pre production! I love the problem solving you talked about…. A cinematographer is basically a creative problem solver.
"Sometimes I just mess around with the white balance on set" - good advice for beginners that shoot with entry level cameras using highly compressed codecs and 8 bit color :D
I legit skipped past the ad and then went back and watched it after I saw you had a BTS segment for it... bravo amazing work once again, one of the best resources for cinematographers on youtube!
There are so many youtubers who wank on about different filming techniques without any validation they know what they're talking about. You are different because you are the real deal!
Love the way you did the sponsored ad in this one. Please keep doing those. It's truly inspiring and an amazing showmanship of good cinematography with a minimal setup!
At 53 seconds in, when I saw the canopy, camera, and dolly tracks, I subscribed. Looking forward to watching your back catalogue and seeing what else you have in store for the future.
Also, when creatively problem solving, you need collaboration because someone may have more experience in a certain area than you and could give you helpful advice, and another reason is because other people even with the same experience as yourself may be slightly more knowledgeable about a certain problem and could help as well
Might be worth looking into the Dedolights with Parallel Beam Intensifiers. The intensifiers multiply the intensity of the lights three to five times unlike the spotlight mounts for Aputure, which lessen the intensity. Since you already use CRLS, the only thing you would’ve needed for that setup with the 600d is a more powerful beam. Dedos might be your solution.
Sam has a great suggestion. If you're into purchasing something of your own, their DLH400 units with a parallel beam intensifier are a great option. It is essentially a very small hmi, whose beam intensity can be increased by about 5 times 😳. If however, you're into replacing your 18K's, then you probably need a PaniBeam unit (very large, heavy and expensive)
How would one of those compare to a source-4 ellipsoidal with a joker 400 in the back? Not used the jokers before but that combination ("jo-leko") seems to be quite common on film sets in the US at least.
I was already psyched on the content of this video, then you put the cherry on top with the quick lighting breakdown of the Squarespace ad. So cool, thank you! Sidenote: seems like another solution to lighting the "indoor" part of the commercial would have been diffusion ABOVE the actress and fake wall rather than the blackout curtain? Since you already had the giant LED panel there sort of doing the same thing (but less powerful).
I have one big question, since the edge wall of garage scene didn't show up in frame, why you didn't make it full with white diffuser so there would be no hard work of exposing in darker garage scene? We just apply the door sliding men and the woman in front of the sliding door with big soft diffuser either with sun or some light. I wonder the why or thought process.
that has got to be the most moody/aesthetic Squarspace ad haha. Loved it! I also loved that you did a lighting breakdown on how you shot the ad. Loved the whole video, great information!

Thanks for the video and for sharing and congratulations for the channel! You have amazing content! But in this case I don't understand why the tent was needed. You could have uncovered the roof of the tent where the actress was and the problem with the lights would have been less.
Love the lack of bullshit you bring Lewis. Straight up even just gives a 1 minute tutorial on how he lit the add love it! Also love the slash of light across your body for your pieces to camera SOFHOB for the win 🤙 Learning so much from you chief please keep it up
Is there any practical way of cutting the wind, if say you had the budget to do so? I mean short of building an actual 200ft wide x 100ft tall wall or building.
Really love your channel. Learn something with each video and it’s useful tricks for real life rather than the cheap tricks you usually see on UA-cam. Hope you keep it up. Nice to see you got a sponsor.
Best add I’ve ever seen. If people took their time to shoot ads like this one, I’d watch them. Quick question, I’m new to filmmaking. What was your take when you shot yourself with a lot of overhead space. You’re obviously an excellent filmmaker. What were you going for? I’ve heard that when cinematographers use a lot of overhead space when filming a person, is to make them seem little/down ect. Would love to hear your take on it. Trying to learn everything I can
Lewis is the kind of guy where you can enjoy watching the ad and the bonus ad making of. Good job, it's always interesting to see the path of the creative process.
This just taught me so much man. Thank you. This channel is a gem. I appreciate you sharing the entire process. This is exactly the type of content I've been tryna find.
Dude! You are killing me! I discovered your channel and have binge watched half of it in the last 24 hrs. Your info is soooo good and your presentation and personality keeps my ADHD brain fully engaged. If you cant tell, I’m already a big fan. Haha
Nice Video. Just wondering why you didn't just use a silk for the side walls and a Half soft frost for the top instead of a duvitin? This way you would've have had soft and (semi hard light top) light all over the place and exposure would've been not so dramatic.
Great one Lewis! Perhaps shooting in a later time of a day could work better to match exposure of white wall with less powerful lights. I am just bouncing my thoughts here.
Yeah this was an option, we just didn't know how long it would take to get it right, it's not the kind of setup you do everyday! Haha, so we didn't want to risk only having a short window at the end of the day
You always talk about "i just go by what I see on the camera" what do you see on the camera? Log? straight rec709? rec709+a lut? thank you in advance brother
Hey Lewis, great video. When gaining permission from neighbors/residents do you offer to pay them or have you found most people are pretty easy to ask straight up?
Leave it to a cinematographer to create a professional Squarespace ad for his UA-cam video haha. Best Squarespace ad I've seen. Such a cool breakdown on the insurance commercial too. I think a lot of people are curious what sets look like and all the ins/outs on a shoot day!

"Sometimes I just mess around with the white balance on set" - good advice for beginners that shoot with entry level cameras using highly compressed codecs and 8 bit color :D
People don't understand the amount of work that goes into 20 second commercial, thank you for making this!
Dude I got so happy when I saw the ad, ya made it man
Never been so grateful for an ad read, that breakdown at the end was so nice. Always incredibly grateful for your content
I really appreciate your practical, “no ego” approach to these videos. Thank you!

This is why I love photo and video work. I love the problem solving.
Best squarespace ad I’ve ever seen

"your logo here" popping up with the whip sound effect is very funny
Love the way you did the sponsored ad in this one. Please keep doing those. It's truly inspiring and an amazing showmanship of good cinematography with a minimal setup!
So cool to see how you problem solve - - Square space ad was amazing - - so happy you did a lighting breakdown of it !
Love your insights. But can we appreciate the lighting on the talking head. SOFHOB goodness!
these are really great man, well done
The ad break was better than the actual house ad 😂
Haha!
At 53 seconds in, when I saw the canopy, camera, and dolly tracks, I subscribed. Looking forward to watching your back catalogue and seeing what else you have in store for the future.
Squarespace ad + BTS + colourgrading steps? That was cool! Thanks for sharing.
Haha the end! I was so curious how you shot the squarespace ad and you put it in at the end
Great stuff!! Thanks for sharing the BTS of the squarespace ad, love the look!!
Not only a great video but even a great ad that I watched all the way through cause it looked so good
I really love your content, thanks man

Amazing video Lewis!
Love it! To me, the Wind added a natural organic component as if she was feeling new and "refreshed" after the purchase. Thanks again!
Bro this is so lovely, I thoroughly enjoy theses videos and your ads 😂
Some people don’t realize how much work this actually is and why is cost so much. Amazing job 💯💯💯👏🏽
Love the Mark Maggiori Print on your wall
I have been following Lewis since his first video and I love him. He’s the best out there. I learn more from him than my film school
Genuinely the most helpful and inspiring videos out there right now
The way you explained this was amazing. Props to you. One mighty talented individual that I for sure look up to
Dang you even broke down the Squarespace ad! That’s awesome, I was actually wondering what your setups were while watching so glad to see that too!
You have to be one of my favorite filmmaking channels on youtube at the moment. So much nights about the industry we love🙏🙌

Maybe try using the fresnel attachment instead of projector head that will significantly cut down the output the light.
I truly appreciate your content. I feel a lot more confidence with projects moving forward. Much respect !

Could you make a video about your career and how you got to where you're at now?
I’m impressed by how well the 600D did against the midday sun! Love single take commercials! So much hidden work that goes into them!
pure gold! I enjoy your stuff a lot, thanks for the effort

thanks for sharing, man.
