Thanks Jeff! I don't think enough of this stuff is readily available unless it's super expensive. It doesn't take long to make these things for us session musicians but really benefits so many people trying to learn.
Your analysis is really spot on and presented in an informative way without being too academic, cos you put a lot of your own ideas into the music. I've heard quite a few versions of 4 on 6, sometimes even the head is a bit different and the solos are always fresh with maybe some typical Wesisms mixed in. Now there's a lot of Wes lessons out there so besides learning a ton of positions, what do you think is a main area to really focus on? Probably an impossible question, as ultimately trying to have your own style. Fab effort, cheers.
Great ! I only wish someone, sometime would play Wes tunes without the pick, like he did It is a different sound with that cumbersome technique, and it gives more tone shaping options
Absolutely agree with you. Only using a pick here as that’s what most are using to start with but I do talk about using the thumb. Also later in the series for the octaves sections it’s all thumb.

The backing track itself is worth far more than the Patreon subscription. Best deal you’ll ever find. Another great lesson.

I would always focus on voab and phrasing if you’re trying to nail a style.

With the outside ii-V’s, any ideas on why Wes chose those chords? Do they have any relation to the original key at all or to the first inside ii-V?
In my opinion he’s approaching the ii-V in G minor, so he’s heading towards Am7-D7 but throws in a tri-tone ii-V who is the Ebm7 to Ab7.
He chose it because it sounds the way it sounds
My Real has those changes as C min 7 to F7 #11.....Bb min7 to Eb7#11.....A min 7 to D7#11 ......Eb min 7 to Ab7 #11
Some places interpret the changes differently. Not necessarily wrong, just different.
Which song that you have done a lesson on, would you recommend for a beginner guitar player?
I’d recommend Midnight Blue.

I’m inclined to agree but listen to Pat Martino’s tribute to Wes album (can’t remember the name) and you will hear a pick player getting really close.
