    Some people may not think this is as good as the instruments you make but your skills, your attention to detail, and your thoughtfulness make it well worth watching.

    Real nice, Kelly's case has some serious character. You did na awesome job at restoring the case without destroying the history. Thank you. Take care.

    I love the look and character of the old fiddle cases and I am ordinarily a champion of the conservation of old instruments. Cases are one of few exceptions. The problem with old violin cases, even in good condition, is that the leather covering and, more importantly, wool felt or natural silk interior linings are favorite breeding grounds for bow mites. A cheap modern case is actually much better protection for a violin and bow precisely because it's made of synthetic materials that are stronger, better padded, better insulated and less hospitable to insects. I guarantee a case like this will attract bugs that will feast on bow hair. I've seen people upcycling old cases into all kinds of useful and decorative objects, which I find a much more suitable use for them. On the other hand I'm looking forward to how you manage this project just because I like your work.

      I appreciate that. I just have one instrument that is going to be in this case...maybe. I do have a modern case for it as of now that holds my bows and such. I wont be storing a bow in this one to see for a while.

    So excited to see your work on this! I did not consider this a repairable item.🙄 Silly brain! I have antique violin case and a very old guitar case that will benefit. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your expertise.

    sweet job
    you make me want to find a guitar case with personality and do a very sympathetic restoration on it. so I have a case for the guitar I am learning to play on. I also need to figure out how to build a nice case for my contra-bass canjo.

    Can you sand down the pegs to fit the holes?

    • @JDanielGraham
      @JDanielGraham  4 місяці тому

      I can but I think Im just going to ream them out a hair when I change strings and wrap up the project violin that is going inside.

    Nice case. Just shorten the pegs. The violin looks ridiculous with those enormous goofy pegs.

      Thanks.I leave them long so they can open the peg box and be trimmed rather than having to repair the pegbox. I turn down the pegs a little so that when they are flush to the box wall a fresh set of pegs fit just right.
