Wow, I wish I found your channel back when I played! Whenever I coach the middle school this year I'll be sure to combine your things with my old coach's and my own!
Hey Coach, I purchased your bundles and clipboard this season and loved it as a first time coach. We went 5-1. That lose was to the championship team that’s been playing together for 5 years, so I’ll take that. I just purchased the new defensive playbook as well and I’m even more excited for next season. I do have a question, how to defend the pass when playing against taller players? That’s what cooked us during that loss.
Great job Coach! That’s pretty incredible as a first time coach. Thx for grabbing all the materials - you should be all set to take the championship this season! When guarding against taller players it’s about keeping everything in front of me. So if I can be a few yards behind their taller receiver, then I can time my jump to make a better play on the ball. If I’m chasing and they are behind me at all, then they have the advantage and they will win that contested catch ball almost every time. I also like to put my taller players in the back if they have the appropriate skill set (as I mention in the Defense playbook). If that’s not possible, my son likes to use the scoop method, in which he goes up for the ball against a tall receiver and scoops in out of the air - this has been effective for him as tipping usually doesn’t work and he’s not always in the position to intercept. Here’s another video around covering a fast receiver that might give some other ideas: Youth Flag Football Tutorial and Drill | Covering a Fast Wide Receiver P1 | Defensive Backs Defense ua-cam.com/video/tA9C_ylQAX4/v-deo.html You can find Part 2 of this in my Defense playlist as well. Hope that helps! Get some out there!! 🏈🔥
@@CoachD If you were here in Vegas I'd loan you my wireless mics . Small lapel or headset. My trainer teaches with one on zoom so when he backs up away from the laptop we can still hear him Motivating (yelling) at us. My wife uses one to teach choreography to her students. I think something like that would be beneficial to you since you are so hands on. Ps I'm going to do the rush drills tonight with my 8u team in Vegas.
Let me know how the drills go tonight. I do have a mic I use in some videos. I’ll throw it back on if that is helpful for you. Check out next week’s video - I’ll have it on for you. Thx!
Very helpful video, awesome stuff! I had a question for when playing against a more advanced QB (maybe others have this question) How would you defend a fast/mobile QB that is very talented at dodging a Blitzer? Our Blitzer will try several times to sack the QB during one play, and the QB can dodge all of the attempts with ease. The QB is good at buying time, and can make a play last as long as he wants. (This hurts us) The WRs will go deep, the field stretches, the play lasts for a long time, and holes open up. 1) The QB will find an open WR deep because of broken coverage or 2) The QB will decide to run, and goes far because of the open space - To compare to NFL QBs = Rodgers in the pocket, Jacksons running ability Our Defense (typically ). 2 safety, 2 corner, 1 rusher, 1 player covering middle -How would you recommend defending a QB like this? They score a lot because no one can cover the QB. Open to tweaking Defense -thanks! Hope you can help! (Sorry for the essay)
I would run the Husker and switch up who rushes the QB. You want to cut off the QB’s strong side and force them to their weak side. Instead of chasing, be a distraction to the QB, like a basketball defender, stay in front of the QB when you cross the line of scrimmage so the QB can’t get around the rusher. In most leagues there is a 7 second clock where the QB must throw or hand off - also, most don’t allow the QB to run. In your case it’s about containment, forcing to the weak side and focusing on coverage. The defenders need to stay home and focus on their assignments, not allowing coverages to break down. Do you have any tips on how to beat DOUBLE TEAMS for co-ed no contact leagues??? I always seem half a second away from pulling the flags but getting no sacks is making my desire to rush burn away very quickly lol.
Double teams - spread the ball around and burn them on short passes - this will make them have to spread out their coverage - then you can beat them deep when they go single coverage. With rushing, practice changing direction at full speed so when you reach the QB you don’t run past them, but can adjust with them and pull that flag no matter which direction they go…
Watch this video and implement the Husker formation to cover the middle as you have a different rusher go in each time. It’s about knowing their offense and pulling LBs back and in the middle if necessary or having one CB cover a bigger zone. The zones should overlap to cover the middle and outside (cheating to whichever side they go to most). Look over the video and let me know what other questions you have: Youth Flag Football Tutorial | Defense formations That Work | Age-Based | Strategy | Tips | Coach ua-cam.com/video/7sI6c3sdPAw/v-deo.html
Great content, Coach D! Although I've purchased your complete coach package, I still have some questions. What defensive formation would you recommend for the end zone? Is the Husker okay, or would you switch to something else? Thanks!
Ken, sorry for the delay - If you have a no run zone, then you have to keep the entire end zone covered, so I like keeping the 2-3…I often will fake a rusher and then cover all zones so the QB runs out of the 7 second clock…if you are rushing - don’t run past the QB, just get in their face and block visibility and hurry them to their weak throwing side…many times they will have a few dominant players who make quick cuts to get open - study the Short Pass Attack strategy and help your defenders shut that down. Don’t let anyone behind you and have the front two defenders watch out for the quick in and out patterns. ua-cam.com/video/_WwHT8GcEU0/v-deo.html
Youth Flag Football Tutorial | Defense formations That Work | Age-Based | Strategy | Tips | Coach ua-cam.com/video/7sI6c3sdPAw/v-deo.html I would go 3 LBs up front (power flag pullers) w 2 CBs in the back (no one behind them). Work on the Ball, Ball, Ball drill as well! Attack the ball once it passes the line of scrimmage.

Flag Football with Coach D gotchu gotchu. Actually I do happen to have a bunch of Velcro flag football flags, do those work just as well in your opinion?
Go for it. Do what you can. I used to use the ones from target that were clicked, so you make it work. If that’s what you can get your hands on, you can start with that and see if you need to upgrade in the future. You should be good with those though.

What is a good stat or metric to measure a rusher performance?
Conversion rate - pulls/attempts
How do you cover the middle when rushing up the gut on his strong side.. when playing 2 front and 2 deep, our middle is always wide up 16 u 5v5

All these teams we play against usually run, when they do throw its always shortt passing plays. What's best defense for that Coach D??
