yes they all should be. the only problem that may arise is the fact that designing a set like this probably took a lot of time and money. lego is still a company, hence they still need to make money.
I have been a fan of Dune since I played the early video games based on the books. Ornithopter was always my favorite. I can wait to get hold of this. Planning on getting 2 to build, one for home, one for work. I will modify the second by swapping out the colored pins and adding tiles to smooth out the appearance.
I'm not really a fan of Dune stuff but I do adore the mixing of technic functionality with the exterior detail of system. It's the best of both worlds and is basically peak lego design in my eyes.
Very much the Same. I appreciate Dune (book and movie ) as they are. But those Machines are pieces of art and this LEGO set is one of the coolest I have seen in a while!
This set really reminds me how Technic used to be - a skeletal shell made out of studded Technic beams using mainly system techniques and mechanisms inside. It is a perfect blend of System and Technic, was like a blast from the past for me and one of the best building experiences I ever had with Lego, even though the wing assemblies got little tiring, having to build them 8 times.
Appears to be quite fairly priced. Even cheap considering the large elements, size and number of minifigures. Especially when you’re able to pick it up at an discount to $/€120. Very impressive functional display queen that provoked conversation and invites to be picked up and played with
Okay, interesting to see your 2x3 plate by the wing lever pops up too. I've had the same issue! I thought I had built it wrong, but now that's starting to seem unlikely... Otherwise, amazing set. I'm not Technic guy, but I love seeing how these functions came together and how they work. I cannot even begin to imagine designing something like that!
Same here. I relocated the four 2x1 single stud plates in step 12 to the other end of the red plate, which stops the "button" contacting the 2x3 plate and dislodging it.
As a huge fan of the Ornithopter, this ticks every box. I didn't expect the wings to actually flap. though it appears the front upper and lower wings move a lot more than the rearward 4 do.
I for one was fascinated by the process while building next elements from following bags, I'm excited to see seemingly chaotic and random bricks coming together to crate a truly unique mechanisms. The moment I finally saw that push lever moving the wings the way they do, it was mesmerizing. The model now proudly stands on a shelf and since it's a play model I do take it for a short flight now and then :D
I am extremely excited about this set. I love everything about it, and don't even mind the colored Technic pins. It looks great and has Technic functions too; we don't have to settle for one or the other. I can't wait to build it!
I would love for this to be a landmark in Lego's future portfolio instead of an exception. IMO, 99% of Lego prototypes should start with some kind of toy function in a vacuum and only once it's satisfying to manipulate is it turned into a characteristic object or scene.
I don’t entirely agree. Not every set needs to be super playable to be successful. I personally enjoy the displayablity and details of things such as the modulars, and other Icons and Ideas sets.
Well, I could comment in English, but hell, I am also Hungarian like Balázs. Dűne rajongóként már novemberben előrendeltem és alig várom, hogy összeépíthessem. Szuper bemutató lett, külön köszönet az építésről a részleteket! Back to English...as a Dune fan I have already pre-ordered this set in November and I just can't wait to build it. Great review of the set, special thanks for showing us the details of the building section!
This will be my first Lego set build since i was a little kid 30+ years ago. Every one is saying this is a hard set for beginners, but love Dune, and just had to get this Lego set. I'll be referencing this video for sure, thanks Balazs!
Personally, as a Dune universe fan, I don't understand the complaints about the red & blue colored pieces - in fact, I find them quite fitting from worldbuilding point of view. An ornithopther, in Dune, is a superbly functional and technical machine, that must work well in extremely harsh conditions of the desert planet Arrakis. As such, I think of it as a "flying tractor", or maybe even more accurately a "flying quad bike" - a vehicle that has to quickly and reliably get you in, and get you out JUST FREAKING NOW when shit hits the fan... I mean, when a sandworm hits the spice harvester... If you look up close at an agricultural or otherwise industrial vehicle or machine (and even on any regular airplane), I imagine you would see a heck-ton of various crazy colors, as long as it makes sense from a utilitarian point of view. I mean, function over form all the way; any "pretty color scheme" being fine and dandy, as long as it does not interfere with practical purposes - especially so in case of a machine for extreme conditions. As such, I imagine the crazy colors making a lot of sense on structurally critical elements, like important axles. Given that, imagining myself for a moment as a field engineer in Dune universe, I would honestly seriously consider actually replacing many black axles in selected places with red ones in such a machine - if that could help me quickly assess its wear and tear and spot any issues, oil leaks, dents and cracks on the critical parts. It might even make the vehicle slightly more expensive, to have those pieces in such an extravagant color, but if the owner cares about the health and wellbeing of the crew - especially when he might be one of them sometimes - I believe they'd gladly pay the comparably small premium for that. With that said, I'm quite very curious if the amazing Lego engineer guy behind this creation might possibly say something similar when you get a chance to ask him! :D
From what was shown...l am impressed... l think, it is a start of a sort of 'hybrid technic'...as was the very first supercar( Enzo Ferrari). Looking forward to a similar design approach with other scifi models like the Peugeot car in Blade Runner ll. Thanks for your honest and open review of this set.
I’m not a Dune fan, it just never interested me. But the mechanisms that they crammed into this actually blew my mine. Definitely going to try and get this one
I just finished building this today, it's been an absolutely marvellous set, I loved the mix of complex technic and classic system so much. This is definitely one of my favourite builds of all time behind the Saturn V
Hi Balázs! Nice video! This set is very cool with innovative building techniques and also I greatly appreciate the Technic mechanisms inside. One of the best set of this year without unveiling the other sets which are will be coming.
Just finished it and was really impressed by the design. They function system blew me away. My only gripe is the wings all bend one way, so I had to recurve half of them to satisfy my ocd... other than that I really like this very unique build!
Thank you for the review RacingBrick! This set looks really nice with tons of playable functions. I have never seen or know nothing of the Dune Movie But I saw clips from the movie and I saw this thing in the clips. When I first saw this set, I really thought this wasn’t minifig scale. So I can not wait to get it!
Yes, the #legoiconsduneatreidesroyalornithopter is really a great model, it's really fun to build. Even if it's a hidden LEGO Technic model! In my opinion, it’s already the best LEGO model of 2024!
This set-as you said-is a very special and unique set where the 18+rating applies! The last time you said that was with the Titanic set, so you really must not be joking about this one here… But I totally love the way the set is constructed, Mike Psiaki is one of my favourite Lego designers! I am sure to give this set a try and thanks for sharing your experience with the Ornithopter, your videos really DO help me decide which sets to buy!!😊😊😊
That is a nice set. I like the mechanics and color scheme. Like you, I agree on the red pieces. Black would've been a better color. I'll be adding it to my set. As always, your builds and opinions are greatly appreciated.
I just finished building my Lego Orinithopter and I love the look. I’m a fan of Dune and the moment I saw this was being released I wanted one. I hit the Lego store in Tokyo for the express purpose of getting one, thankfully they had two. My feeling is that this is a great looking and very sturdy build but there are a few detractions. First, the tolerances for the mechanism for the wings is very narrow, get it slightly wrong and it doesn’t work as it should, I may rebuild mine at some point to address this issue. Next, the red ball joints are a little off putting but unless I rebuild it I will live with them. I wish Lego had considered changing these to black. Third, I’m considering getting some smooth top tiles to add to the outside of the fuselage, the exposed nubs bug me a bit. Lastly, I would have liked some sort of display base for the mini-figures but I guess I can get a plate for that later. On the whole, this was a great build but one that should be done with patience, don’t rush through the wing mechanism build, and by those that have experience with intricate builds. I love this Lego Ornithopter and hope they release one with an interior we can see. I enjoyed the build and the end result. Excellent points in your video. I agree with you!
Got tired of the red ball joints and felt I needed to change them to black. Well, not an easy job without tearing the build apart but I got most of them changed to black. Then I thought “hmmm, I can make another modification to this” so I got some smooth top plates and started to cover the exposed brick studs. I had enough to do most of one side but still need more to do the other. Now I have to do the other side. I like the smoother look and I’m thinking of another modification to this one. Still not pleased with the wing flapping mechanism, still not moving as I have seen in videos, so I may tear this build apart and redo it at some point in the future. However, I still think this is a wonderful Lego build. Perfection….no, but darn near. I’m hoping Lego offers the second more ‘sporty’ Ornithopter in the future. I love that version too.
I am happy you like the set so much, because as both a Dune and Lego fan I bought it on presale as soon as it was published. Can't wait for it to arrive!
I love how complicated the build was! That same 2 x 3 piece by the lever for the flapping eventually loosens up for me as well. Now to find a spot for it with the wings deployed...
I just built this set and had a great time doing so. Really glad I bought it. I'm also a big fan of Dune and Lego, so it was the perfect combination. Yes, it was quite tricky and I had actually made a small mistake with the landing gear mechanism, which mean't I had to pull bit's of it apart and problem solve. I sorted it out in the end. I never could work out, what the small beige part was for, that sits on two little red parts inside the mechanical core? The set seems to work fine without it.
Oh, I've had them mess up with swapping pieces very recently. I got the a two by two by three gray brick when it should been two four four by three for the Boutique Hotel, and I'm currently waiting for a replacement part for the Yamaha Motorcycle because they gave me an extra beam instead of the toothed thing for the motor assembly.
I heard of this and was on the fence. I saw your reveal video and -- I preordered that day! I can't wait! It is the perfect mix of traditional model and Technic, as well as a Mini-Fig scale play model. I will get mine the first week of February and I already have the shelf space for it. Thanks for this video and the hints in it. Oh and I also suggest the Lego Builder app. It is really designed for kids, but it allows you to see connections from various angles and its hard to make mistakes using it.
Such a Cool Set! I am personally not a major fan of Dune but the Ornithopter takes the cake! I would say the trade off between Playability and looks is great as I would have wanted the set to be functional not static. Great Review Balazs! I love how you go through the building process. Great stuff! 👍 *Mental note: Buy 20 black towball pins and 31 black axles.*
Hey Brash, early subscriber big supporter of the channel and greatly appreciate all the work you put in! One thing I’d appreciate when you next talk about price: Include: Euros American dollars Great Britain pounds and.. possibly…. Australian Dollars! (Australians and New Zealanders appreciate knowing these prices) - you don’t have to…. but would increase your subscriber base a lot more - kiwis understand prices based off the AUD. You may get more followers too! Thanks again for all the work you put in! Take care, Alex!
I do think some people who wanted an accurate model might have a problem with the non circular look the connection between the wings and fuselage. For that I understand if you have a problem due to it looking less clean, but I honestly don't mind that. And I honestly think it will not be hard to mode it by your liking. I think it would have been great if it also had the cockpit of the older model of the Ornithopter from the movie and replace it whenever you like, but that's just a minor thing. By older model I mean the vehicle that Paul and Jessica used to escape in the movie
Just finished builting this myself yesterday after my preorder showed up a few days back, love it. I think that for a lego set they went the right direction with Function and Fun over form. If you want a perfect display model other companies will happliy charge you 2 to 3 times this price of the lego set for something movie accurate (at mostly likely static too) but at the cost of the fun you get with this. I totally understand the complaints about the exposed legoness of this set but its a a lego set haha if I want screen accurate I would get a scale model kit instead.
Though I'm not familiar with Dune or it's cinematic lore this is still a great building set as it's technically brilliant, functional, and challenging to assemble. As a long time builder really love seeing builds that look like basic Lego but have good deal of technic infrastructure and functionality. Making mention of the Ecto 1 was a great example as are the 007 Aston Martin, and T2 Camper van which go well and beyond just a normal steering mechanism.
I also had a mixup in one of my latest build, the Harry Potter train, where the mixup was a grey flat disk with a cross hole replaced by a tan 3x1 jumper plate with 2 top studs. Even more different from each other than your mixup
I enjoyed your footage and thoughts about the construction and the model itself. For fans of the movie a really good set. Unfortunately i don’t see any kids swooshing around in the neighborhood with their lego models. That is sad. But it’s the actual time. Keep up the good work.
I love this set! I don’t get the complaints coming from some (mostly system builders) that it was difficult to build! It was an easy build for me, didn’t take long at all! Didn’t find any of the builds or connections tricky at all! And the result is amazing! Plus I sold the minifigures (I don’t collect them) so the set went from being kinda pricey to an absolute bargain! 😂 Best set of the year IMHO! 11:55 I agree with you! Perfect mix of form and function! I love technic sets and their functionality but so often their form goes out the window! The super cars are really an exception to this but they’re still not quite right looking! This balances both perfectly! And I’m sure plenty of people will find ways of improving the looks and making it more accurate to the way it looks on screen! That is much easier than trying to add mechanical functions like the wing movement and landing gear to a more accurate looking but whole system built (or at least system focused) set!
The set is designed to be held further back than where you are holding it. There is a black marker on the underside of the tail behind which you are meant to grip. This would result in pushing the bottom of the bar to flap the wings, which may help with avoiding that piece coming off.
@@RacingBrick: That was the designer's intent as to where to hold it. Its why he placed the black triangle where he did. That's not to say that the designer followed his own design when holding it in demonstrations :)
@@lukejw11 or maybe, just maybe, your interpretation of the whole thing is not correct? As the designer shows how to do it, the instructions also show you how to manage it, and it's not what you say.
@@RacingBrickI am not interpreting anything. Just repeating what the designer said as to his intent. Feel free to hold the toy in manner you like though. Just watch your fingers when the ramp closes if you choose to hold it in front of the black triangle :)
Just finished my ornithopter and all the moving parts completely trumps any design complaints. I’ve unfolded the wings and landing gear countless times already lol
Lego should really focus on the engineering techniques for the adults and play-ability for the younger ones, the combination of both in this set is what made me purchase it on sale.
In general I think the model is really great! my two issues are however 1. the price (12 cents per piece, I guess more than 10 is the unfortunate new standard). 2. the massive use of unfitting colours not just during the build, but still visible when finished. I don't see why an 18+ 165$ Lego build has such bright red pins amongst others. I mean if they wanted to use other colours, the could've also gone with more brown or beige ones to fit the sand idea of the vehicle's origins, but red and blue is just ridiculous
I still have to see the movie but this set is awesome, it's what Lego is all about. I would buy it even without knowing what it is as it looks and works cool on its own.
I am seeing in another review of this set that the intention of the flapping function is that you operate it with the vented 1x2 slope at the back of the lever, not all the way at the front like you are. I don't have my set in hand yet but I wonder if operating it like that will stop that brick from coming loose.
This is best lego set I have seen in years. Unique and clever design! Better than some of those expensive sets imho. And YES, Baron is ugly.. Also cant wait to watch Dune Part II
This is what Lego 18+ sets should be. But the red technic pins! Couldn't they figure out a rule change to make black pins slide even with the cost of harder to follow instructions? I think they realize this set is aimed at Dune fans who may not be big Lego fans. If I ever get this, I'll probably order it with black pins and axel pieces from pick a brick. Do you know if there is a friction/other difference between the pieces?

This is what a playable set for adults should be like.
I agree
I don't really know what's that adult about it aside from the branding?
@@slippinjenny7410 great functionality and the complexity of them
yes they all should be. the only problem that may arise is the fact that designing a set like this probably took a lot of time and money. lego is still a company, hence they still need to make money.
@@slippinjenny7410 i mean like a kid can't really build something this complex.
I love seeing advanced sets with a combination of Technic and regular Lego.

Yeah modern technic systems are a shell of what they used to be. We had the pneumatic kit and the older systems growing up, that was pinnacle
Now imagine if they made the Spice Excavator as well! Maybe "simple" looking, but there's so much room for detail ^^
the inside of the build was way more intricate than i expected, and it looks great
really nice video! I truly appreciate the hard work to give us so much satisfaction with your videos!

It's a finicky mechanism I would have made it springloaded and allowed for more range of motion but there were many constraints designing this thing
This set is amazing! Play is key for sure! Being able to show it off is the best plus it’s Dune!!! I’m so happy they brought dune to Lego

Definitely appreciate this video. I got to bag 4 and was concerned the wing flapping mechanic wasn’t correct due to the limited movement.
Same and I experience the same issue as the video creator. Not a lot of flapping in the rear wings and the piece comes loose after a while.

I don’t entirely agree. Not every set needs to be super playable to be successful. I personally enjoy the displayablity and details of things such as the modulars, and other Icons and Ideas sets.

Besides the pins an excellent set. A definite buy for me.

Great model, and great video!! Keep it coming Racing Brick :)
A few years ago I bought the 2020 technic mobile crane, and four of the LBG 1x6 tiles were missing, and in their place were four extra 6L axles.
Such a Cool Set! I am personally not a major fan of Dune but the Ornithopter takes the cake!
I would say the trade off between Playability and looks is great as I would have wanted the set to be functional not static.
Great Review Balazs! I love how you go through the building process. Great stuff! 👍
*Mental note: Buy 20 black towball pins and 31 black axles.*
Where did you get those numbers? Im looking to do the same thing
@@kaskobi3657 From the Video at 1:52 The parts list appears. cheers
would painting it black work?
Hey Brash, early subscriber big supporter of the channel and greatly appreciate all the work you put in!
One thing I’d appreciate when you next talk about price:
Include:
Euros
American dollars
Great Britain pounds and..
Pre ordered mine 1 day after the reveal. Can't wait till it arrives 😁
Totally looking forward in getting this set. Looks like fun to build. 👍
This is turning into one of the most technical builds I've done in a while
It looks simply amazing! A true jewel 🤩
Ten months passed and this is still the best set released this year.
Wow this is insanely good set!!
1:05 Well, we'll see how well this new rotor blade performs when used in helicopter rotors!
Super cool!
🪰🦋🪰Love the Dune Theme...🙂🪰👍
its almost closer to the original technic sets that used the studded beams to create the functions
Legendary set
Best set of the year IMHO!
Really nice movements like the one we will see on the forthcoming V-tol
Mine has the same issue with the 2X3 near the flapping mechanism, i am also looking at replacing the red parts from yout recent video as well.
What a compact building.
The set is designed to be held further back than where you are holding it. There is a black marker on the underside of the tail behind which you are meant to grip. This would result in pushing the bottom of the bar to flap the wings, which may help with avoiding that piece coming off.
I'm so glad you know better how the set is designed than the designer himself, I'll make sure to let him know he was doing it wrong at the reveal ;)
@@lukejw11 you know, you can switch your hand's position between flapping and closing :)
I love howit looks
I am building it right now and it is a great build. I have many technic so it is great for me.
I agree they should have used black links.
Amazing set!
In general I think the model is really great! my two issues are however
1. the price (12 cents per piece, I guess more than 10 is the unfortunate new standard).
2. the massive use of unfitting colours not just during the build, but still visible when finished. I don't see why an 18+ 165$ Lego build has such bright red pins amongst others. I mean if they wanted to use other colours, the could've also gone with more brown or beige ones to fit the sand idea of the vehicle's origins, but red and blue is just ridiculous
I love the complexity of the model but it seems that blades bend on one side: at starboard they touch the floor, not at port.
Idk why you’re using boat terminology for a fictional aircraft lol
No problem with the red parts here. In fact I'd like the visible blue parts to be red as well. A very tempting model to buy
Mike Psiaki continues to amaze.
Best set op 2024 by far. I like the look and functions. I'd replace all funky colors of course...
Thanks
This is awesome
The part in 3:26 is not working for me. I do not know what I am doing wrong.
Great, i will buy this next. Will look great next to my red Airbus.
10:54 where did you get the Space Shuttle Launch System from?
Check out the video released before this one :)
@@RacingBrick oh, I should've looked myself... Thanks!!
