বাংলাদেশের সামষ্টিক অর্থনৈতিক সূচকগুলো এখন প্রচণ্ড চাপের মুখে পড়েছে। একইসঙ্গে বৈদেশিক মুদ্রার মজুতও দিন দিন কমছে। এমন এক সময়ে এসব ঘটছে যখন বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক মহলও আসন্ন নির্বাচন নিয়ে অস্থিরতার মধ্যে আছে। কেন বাংলাদেশ এই অর্থনৈতিক চাপের মুখে পড়ল? কেন আইএমএফের ঋণের শর্তগুলো পূরণ করতে পারল না? এই অবস্থা থেকে উত্তরণের উপায় কী?

Can you claim that we are an honest nation? Can you claim that Mir Zafars were not born in this Bengal? In Bangladesh, barring a very few, we all are mentally corrupt. We always try to find loopholes to earn money in unethical ways. Corruption does not live in the society. It lives in our brain, in our gene. Those who get opportunity they get involved in corruption. Those who do not get opportunity they are honest by chance, not by character.
Suppose, in a village, 100 families live. Out of 100 families, 95 families are dishonest people. Now, who will be the 'Matbor' or Headman of that village? Of course, one of the dishonest families. Because, they outnumber the honest families. Likewise, in Bangladesh more than 95% people are dishonest. Then who will come to lead us, or who will be able to lead us?
In Bangladesh, if the only earning member of a family desires to lead an honest life, he will not be able to do it. Because, his parents, wife and children will demand such things to him that he can not meet without earning money in an unethical way. His wife will always compare their living standard with other family of same job. The family members will ensure that the individual gets involved in corruption.
Moreover, if any person earns extra money by unethical means he receives extra respect from the members of his foamily, relatives and other people of the society. Extra money means he can take extra care for all and this brings extra respect for him. Nobody will ask how this extra money he earned. Rather they will be proud of this extra-earning individual.
If we live in such a society of people, how can we expect honesty and integrity will prevail in our Bangladesh? The problem is that many of us are always making loud voice against dishonesty and corruption, but at the same time we are exercising these practices. Many of us are hypocrite and are possessing double standard characters.
