I've had that same little Black & Decker for about 10 years and it's still going strong.
I had not been able to figure out how to remove and clean the filter. You explained everything so fully and so simply. Thank you so much!
Thank you! I've been watching a lot of dozens reviews, and I'm leaning toward buying this one!
awesome reviews!
I am Linda’s husband and I find this vacuum is very easy to use, it gets under my living room chair easily and has lots of suction. It’s light and even though I have MS and am confined to an electric chair. It clean up our Jack Russell’s hair and then easy to clean.
Hey man, you really spent some time in your demo, by the time you finished you had a full beard going on! We appreciate all your research and efforts - we're SOLD!
Costco this week $49.99 plus bonus accessory kit. Right angle brush, Crevice tool, Extension hose, hose connector, storage bag. Crevice tool a must for hard to reach areas in automobile. Just opened box, will get back to you on usage.
I have total 3 units, one has a plugin without base and all have a flex hose attached for attaching accesories. The battery just gave out after 16 month on one with plugin. Looks like other 2 will go next. I have worx tools witch uses 20v plugin battery modules, they have a 6-8 square cube style with short hose with built-in brush. It's about $60 ,less charger and battery.
The 20V rechargeable battery on mine just gave out and it can't be replaced (according to B&D support) since it's over 2 years old. So, you can throw away $100 for another one of these vacuums or look for an alternative. It's too bad, cuz this vacuum worked great. Planned obsolescence at it's finest!
Indeed. The inability to easily replace the battery is the most disappointing thing about this handheld.
someone mentioned this issue with their 20v decker. battery went and basically so did the vacuum. now that it's being mentioned here and it's happening rather frequently that does it i don't care about it's great suction power or ratings. i just ordered this thing from amazon yesterday. when it comes i'm gonna give it a try and it's going right back. i'm not paying ~$80 for a 2-3yr product. gonna go with the bissell clean view. this is pretty shady of black and decker.
Where do you get filter replacement. I love this vacuum and just cleaned it after watching your video - very easy to use.
Would have been good to see charging and running times, I would have thought this was one of the more important areas.
Yeah, I agree, John.
This was one of our earlier videos and definitely wasn't a great end product. Sorry it's not better.
We're doing our best to make our newer videos more complete and fully show the product and all its features.
It would be helpful to discuss how long the battery lasts when using it. On a brand new vacuum I am finding that it is a very short time-span.
That's pretty typical of most cordless handheld vacuums.
If my memory is correct, I believe the run time on this was 10-15 minutes.
I've owned 2 Black + Decker Pivot vacuums and have a love/hate relationship with them. While they work at full power they're fabulous. But once the battery dies - and in my experience it's about 18 months - they're useless. Basically it's a consumable product. We're now looking for a handheld vacuum with a replaceable battery which wouldn't be B+D.
This seems to be a common problem among many cordless handheld vacuums. The batteries usually go 18 to 36 months before dying, and replacing the battery is often as expensive as the machine itself.
You may just be better off with a 2-in-1 cordless stick, like the Dyson V10 / V11, or a corded handheld.
I need to use vacuum to clean car floors and major concern is suction power and battery. I thank review re battery life and no replacement.
I've had this Vac for a couple years. It has good power for what its designed for. recently the battery life started to decline. I think the rechargeable battery should have lasted longer. disappointed that i cant replace it. Not done trying. I did manage to take it apart to expose the battery (s) but the metal tabs on the battery terminals look like they are glued in place. There are 5 separate batteries wired in series and connected together. Anyone else having battery trouble.
I would say a couple year life is pretty typical for lithium ion batteries like this. You'll need to either replace the battery or replace the vacuum in its entirety.
No plug on the 20V version & no access to the thermal fuse. B & D figured out how to prevent repair to this product. Fine engineering!,,
How is it for cleaning between car seats? The nozzle looks wider then some other bd models
When you pull out the crevice tool and fully extend it it's a bit easier. But I would say it's not as ideal for cleaning cars as others we've tested.
See our full write up here - moderncastle.com/best-car-vacuum/
The testing of the vacuum was limited to just hardwood with various selected debris fields in which for the most part the vacuum performed well. I would say most folks would use this vacuum on the carpet, for instance, stairs and the car. Why not test the vacuum on the carpet? This would have made for a more complete analysis of the vacuum and gave people a better understanding of the product if it was worth the buy.
The pivot is a good vacuum when it works. The 2 years battery life is the weak point of the vac. There are 5 x 18650 (3.7v each) batteries connected in series to generate the 18.5 volts to run it. I believe it is bad practice to charge 18650 cells in series at ( ~ 20 volts?) which is what I believe is causing premature failure of the Li ion cells. These cells should be charged at no more than 4.2 v each in parallel. Programmed obsolescence by B&D?
Perhaps? I don't know enough about those specific batteries to say for sure.
However, I will say that it's pretty common for most rechargeable batteries to have a 2-3 year life in vacuums. To me it doesn't feel like B&D is doing anything all that different than other vacuum makers.
Thanks..been dying to figure out how to clean that filter...so dumb of me
When I pulled out the shaft I could not push it back in. Any secret to get it back in?
Try jiggling it around while pushing.
That said, it is easy to get it stuck.
I have really long hair that sheds like crazy! Would this be a good handheld to pick that up?
You'd be better off with a full sized vacuum like the Dyson V10.
However, if you're just looking at handhelds then yes, this would be a good option. I'd mostly recommend you avoid rotating brushrolls with super long hair (more likely to tangle).
I can't get the crevice tool to slide back into the nozzle. It seems to be permanently stuck. What can I do to release it and push it back into position so I can use the normal nozzle? Thank you!
Take it to a service center. You can find them here - www.blackanddecker.com/support/find-a-service-center
Do you happen to know how and why the vacuum is making a noise from the motor and how to get rid of that noise?
Unfortunately, I do not.
However, you can take it to a Black & Decker service center and they should be able to diagnose it - www.blackanddecker.com/support/find-a-service-center
Nice video! How long does the battery last on a full charge? And how do I know when it is fully charged? Thank you.
@@ModernCastle I noticed the blue light turned on indicating it was charging and then turned off after it was charged. Thank you!
BATTERY: Yep, that's the issue. I have the old Ni-Cd Pivot and loved it. When the batteries went dead, yes you could find them online for they were like $50 so it didn't pay - throw the old one away or maybe you could use the filter on the Li-ion model.
If you price Li-ion batteries, again, you'll see that they are about the price of this vacuum. So again, why replace the battery when for another $20 you get a newer unit?
FINAL QUESTION: One begins to question the true cost of batteries. If they really cost as much as they charge, there would be no way to manufacture this vacuum and make a profit - you surely can't make money on replacement batteries either. It really suggests the battery market is overpriced with pricing that the market "will bear."
Hi how many hours you full charge this and how many hours you can use this after a full charge?
Is the filter is washable?or what parts is washable?
Filter is not washable. None of the parts are explicitly labeled as washable.
I can't get the extension piece in...............getting it out is fine but not in. HELP!! I love this product.
I don't think there's much you can do...the piece of plastic is probably just wearing out / defective. Once it's in I'd suggest leaving it in.
Great video but I was hoping to figure out how to place in charger.
Yeah...it's a been tricky to get it in. I just kept rotating it around until it would properly slide in.
I’ve just received mine and thought ‘How on earth….then realised it was sideways. Now sat happily in the utility room on charge.
*Another review may come later.
I have this exact vacuum and we were trying to clean the filter as well as the pre filter, we got the "paper" out real easily and have watched other videos as well as read the booklet telling to take out the filter and clean it. We have tried to remove it to no avail. Is there some trick that we aren't doing? I purchased new filters when I bought the unit in 2016 but the filters look fine just were needing cleaning. Please help!
are you having battery issues like everyone is mentioning?? mine is on it's way. and it'll promptly be on its way back in less than a week.
Would have been nice if you'd included how much actual vacuuming time you get
We have this vac and we liked it but it has a problem that it turns it’s self off ,apparently from other videos it has a faulty thermal breaker diode that needs to be replaced . I think B&D should offer to fix it but most likely they’ll not so it is the last product we buy from the the brand . And we tell a friend and they’ll tell a friend . Igloo made acrappy coolers when the cheap latch broke after a few months you had to buy another cheap latch for 18.00 dollars back in the 80s . Now there’s dozens of coolers far superior to the igloo and they where the big boys in that market
Sorry to hear about your problems with B&D.
After nearly 3 years of testing vacuums, I tend to agree, there are definitely better vacuum choices than B&D. It's not a bad vacuum by any stretch, but Dyson is massively ahead, as is Shark, compared to B&D.
Is it effective to remove dust?
It's okay, but not amazing due to the relative size of the dusting brush.
I bought one from costco for $49.99
The only problem I have is there is no battery indicator, but even when it has low battery, I was able to clean my whole car.
I’m not buying a vacuum to clean cereal so it’s fine Lol
It's ok but the dust bin is to small I would think it can only hold about one cup of dust
IS it true that the vacuum becomes useless after 1 to 2 years because of the battery and there are no replacements??
Yes. From what I've heard it's hard / impossible to find reasonable priced battery replacement.
It's more likely to get 2-3 years, but once it's dead you probably won't be able to fix it.
This is the case with many cheap handheld vacuums though. So it's not a problem exclusive to B&D.
@@ModernCastle thank you for the quick response! I was really looking to buy this vacuum, but I appreciate the feedback! I might just go for a plug-in 12V one a shop vac! Thank you again 😊🙏🏻
You didn't even show how it charges, does it have a wall plate or a base or anything.
I mounted mine to the end of a cabinet in my garage and ran the wire into the cabinet then out to the outlet. Clean look.
is it good for pet hair ?
Eh..it's okay, not great.
You really want something with a brushroller and/or rubberized attachment. Something like this one - moderncastle.com/vacuum-cleaner-reviews/bissell-pet-hair-eraser-handheld-vacuum-review/
Brilliant vacuum but l would never buy another one because l just cannot get a replacement battery.
Delonghi is 6
Good but some things not explained
He does a lot of repeating in this review and he doesn’t even talk about how the vac is charged. How long it takes and how is the user is notified that it is fully charged.
Agreed...this was one of our first videos and certainly not our best. Sorry the video didn't live up to expectations.
Hopefully our more recent videos are more helpful.
This guy kind of reminds me of actor Steve Buscemi. I want to yell at him - "YOU'RE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT DONNY!"

Hey buddy, just a couple quick questions on the vac, how did it perform over time, assuming that you kept it and kept using it?
I ask because of all the negative Amazon reviews when it come to battery life and overall durability. Thanks.
@@frankkolton1780 We didn't test this model over time. Just for this video and then we gave it away.
When it comes to battery life pretty much all of these cordless handhelds aren't great. Usually within 2-3 years you need to replace the battery.
With respect to overall durability, there was nothing about the build quality that made me think it would have issues long-term. But again, we didn't do a long-term test on this model.
@@ModernCastle
I think I end up getting something with replaceable battery pack then. Many thanks.
Battery dead just after warranty ended. It is not replaceable. It is integrated in plastic cover with micro chip. You need to hardly remove weldered metals from battery after replacing solder it back. Possible for only who have some skills and solder. Wish me luck :D
Next time, show how much it is in CM or MM.
Thanks. We are making a point to include metric in all of our more recent videos.
Interesting pause after "fully extended" An aspirational pause. Those tests took a while obviously, enough time to grow a beard.
Charge lasts only 12 minutes. Recharge time: 10 Hrs. Battery not replaceable. Overpriced piece of plastic!!
I think this vacuum is designed for cars not homes.
Cars, small messes, and other places where you don't need / want a full size vacuum.
@@ModernCastle Hi again, do you know how many watts does it need? I am planning to fix in my car and then keep charging from the car buy buying an adaptor. I just need to know the wattage to know which adaptor to buy. I was unable to get this information. Thanks
@@hussainluaibi1481 If you're buying in the US then it uses a standard AC adapter 60-120V
@@ModernCastle thanks for the reply. I have already bought it from Costco Canada. I am still unable to know the wattage it uses. This will help me buy a suitable car adaptor
@@hussainluaibi1481 Quick Google search says Canada also uses 120V adapters.
As far as the wattage, I'm not really sure what you're asking. The power brick doesn't include any info on the required watts.
No long reach crevice device....
That is true. If a crevice tool is important you should buy something else.
Battery dead after few uses and it cant be replaced.
Dont buy!!!!!
It's covered by a 2 year warranty. Did you email Black & Decker for a replacement?
still not a good deal. i purchased the 3yr warranty but it doesn't matter. who buys a vacuum for just 2 or 3yrs??? i'm returning mine as soon as i get it. getting the bissell clean view.
I know this is an old video but just a bit of advice
.. You should NEVER cover up the logo or name of your company which you are in this video! You should have it off to the side so that it's always visible to your left or right.
Don't buy this product. There are many cases of controlled obsolescence on his model. The battery will stop running precisely after the warranty ends and there is no possible replacement. All the plastic pollution caused by this makes me really angry.
Fair point. It's a cheap handheld vacuum designed to last anywhere from 2-5 years.
But what would you buy in place? Basically all standalone handheld vacuums on the market are of a similar price point and quality.
OK I have essentially the same battery criticism. Are there no handheld vacuums with replaceable batteries? My battery powered garden tools and drills all have replaceable batteries. What's up? Sounds like a marketing opportunity for some company.
@@davidkelly6842 Nothing great that we've come across yet, especially no clickable systems (like you'd see with those powered tools).
The handheld vacuums are just so inexpensive I imagine most companies just don't think the added complexity / manufacturer cost is worth it.
When the battery is dead --- ITS DEAD FOR GOOD - THAT SUMS IT ALL ! NO...I WILL NOT BUY IT
