I think Superman's reaction to the effects of Kryptonite is so intense because not only is it it Kyrptonite, literal poison to him, but also he simply never feels pain or discomfort.....ever, so the feeling must be overwhelming. Imagine if you were 30 years old and never had a paper cut or stumped your toe or ever felt pain in any way. How do you think you'd react if after 30 years of never even knowing what pain was you accidentally cut yourself?
Jason Wilson exactly man!! i said this in superman 2 when hes normal and the dude hits him in the bar, imagine never feeling pain your entire life then getting socked in the jaw, that pain would destroy you
That's the same reason he's so bad at fighting in Superman II when the trucker kicks his ass. He's never had to face someone who might be stronger than him or who might fight dirty.
Thats so true, but I think that beating taught him a very valuable lesson in fighting, hence how he handled all 3 [ZoD & his team very well] in the fight in the city, if you watch that fight he was actually winning, but only ppl were getting hurt in the process, love the way he gave Non a beating underground [must have been a good uppercut] way he smashed him up & out of the ground & through the buildings & then my favorite Reeve moment ever' where he spins & throws ZoD into that Coke advert (the look on Supes face after he did it was just so perfect) its like "want some more you Bast$%*"!" The fact that Luthor, in this, seems like an armless friendly gruesome business man is what sells it. When it comes down to it, he's a heartless cold blooded sociopath. Lex is indeed a diseased maniac. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor in Batman vs Superman Dawn Of Justice is a self entitled spoiled brat and too Riddler but he did succeed where Hackman's Lex failed. He killed Superman and he framed Superman for the terrorist attack in Washington D.C. and Nairomi, abducted his mother and girlfriend and nearly killed both of them, enclosed in the wheel chair of the legless survivor of Zod's attack a year with an IED prior when Superman was to speak to the senate and threatened Senator Finch as well, He was one sick puppy and uses his urine in jar and labels it Granny's Peach Tea and Granny's chocolate chip cookies with his fecal matter plus blackmailed Superman and Batman to fight each other to the death and tells Superman if he kills Batman his mother Martha Kent will live but if he flies away his mother dies and taunts Superman with photos of his terrified mother and says "Here we go, Here we go. And now God bends to my will. Now the cameras at your ship are waiting to see the holes in the holy. Yes the Almighty comes dirty when it counts! To save Martha, Bring me the head of the Bat." followed by him looking at the time clock and says "Mother Of God will you look at the time. When you came here you had an hour. Now it's less." Eisenberg's Lex is Lex's son Alexander but like I said Eisenberg's Lex is truly a psycho and worse than Hackman's and used his blood and Zod's remains to create Doomsday to kill Superman
That is some stellar acting from a great cast that surpasses all the technical limitations and silly costumes. And Donner...long live you. You bring heart in everything you touch.
It may look easy; but Christopher Reeve's series of facial expressions in this scene -- fearless and scornful of his enemy before he opens the box, utterly confused and baffled at his first experience of pain after he opens it, fearful (SUPERMAN fearful!) as Luthor approaches him, and he realizes how he's been ambushed, and then utterly exhausted and defeated as he collapses -- are a testament to how well Reeve acted this part. There are any number of handsome musclemen, in gyms and on sports teams around the country, who could have filled out the famous suit; Christopher Reeve is remembered so fondly as Superman because he created a CHARACTER that audiences loved. Rest in peace, Chris.
I love how the fate of millions is being decided between a man who fashions himself a god, and an *actual* god. The simplicity of Lex outsmarting the indestructible Superman, getting the drop on him with his ultimate weakness is like a fantastical cautionary tale out of Greek Mythology. There's a scene from the directors cut where Lex kills her for freeing Superman. Obviously it wasn't added to original theatrical release. She was too hot to die a horrible death.
"A little souvenir from the old hometown." I always loved this little subtle reference to Smallville. This was always one of my absolute favorite moments between Chris Reeves Superman and Gene Hackman Lex Luthor. Intense yet fun.

Possibly the best line at 2.45 of the whole movie! When Ms.Tessmacher says "but Lex, my mother lives in Hackensack......!" and Lex shakes his head indicating "not anymore!" Best Superman, Bext Lex Luthor, and best Superman Movie!
One little detail that really adds to the scene where Superman is overcome by the kryptonite is the way he bumps into the table as he backs away. In a few seconds, this god-man who is not only the strongest man on Earth, but the most super-coordinated, has been reduced to a shaky weakling who can't help bumping into the furniture. It really packs a punch to see an angelic muscleman-hero reduced to utter impotence in a few seconds.
I love to revisit these old clips and see them through fresh eyes. For instance how does Lex change the lights above the pool when they burn out? I suppose he has the resources to have a scaffold brought down there and then poor Otis has to climb up there and change them lol.
Agreed,Christopher reeve was a classical actor who could portray Superman anyday at anytime were the other actors were wannabes when came to portraying Superman!
That Superman was pretty much wounded with kryptonite knife in his back.....threw a trillions of tons weighing island of Kryptonite in space...was unconscious and hit with a grt speed on land....And people of Earth has no other choice but to take him to hospital.....Unlike this scene...Both have some different aspects...but same Superman theme(i mean SR was also based on Reeve's Supes )
'Even you with your great speed couldn't stop both of them!" Supes then proceeds to screw around looking for a detonator for a period of time in which he could have stopped both missiles and had a nap.
She's worried about her mother; if her mother's life wasn't at stake, a personal interest, the world would have been screwed; Richard's cinematography and director's choices. Wow!!!! The cinematographer gives the director the options and the director picks which to use.
Writing the script or I should say "rewriting the script" because there was already a script for Superman in place, but Richard Donner dismissed it as pure garbage lol. Anyway it must have been a fun an interesting challenge to write this movie. For the kryptonite/pool sequence they must have worried about how Superman could possibly get himself out of that situation. There might be a version where Otis, who is tired of being bullied by Lex jumps in and saves him, sans kiss of course. Its almost biblical the way this played out though. Miss Tessmacher is shown to be weak, and she gives into temptation first saving him knowing Lex would kill her and then kissing him, much like Eve from the Bible. And, incidentally, Miss Tessmacher's first name is Eve.
The great thing about the performances of Reeve and Hackman is that they are both able to find the humor in their parts without sacrificing their charisma, so that Superman can seem appropriately strong and Luthor appropriately smart and threatening. This is a really strong adversarial relationship.
North Korea Is The Greatest Nation, unless you're joking, you're probably only familiar with the Lex Luthor of the past 30 years or so. He was originally an egotistical mad scientist before they retconned him into a brilliant, but maniacal businessman. As for why he's not bald for the majority of the film is because Gene Hackman refused to shave his head or wear a bald cap.
In a way his jovial, sarcastic humor adds to the intimidation. He’s plotting the deaths of millions, faced with the most powerful being on earth-and he chuckles in the face of all of it.
Gene Hackman was a great Lex Luthor! I know Luthor is vile, but he clearly demonstrated how clever he was. Hiding kryptonite in lead. Superman is still mortal. He may not die like us, but he will perish with old age. He can be hurt with red sun, magical energies, and super strong adversaries. In the comic, Doomsday killed him. Darkseid hurt him with brute strength and omega beam, Metallo, the kryptonite battery, and so many other opponents. He just can not die by normal means. I always knew he was not indestructible. He is great in his own ways. There are so many heroes from all the comics that I admire. I love the Flash!
Love how superman has many powers and the most obvious and ridicules weaknesses like a rock a green rock that was the rest pieces of you're own planet like his own home kills him like what defaq hahahaha
I never noticed that when Superman is in the presences of the kryptonite, there's humming pulsing sound I guess to simulate the radiation coming off it and it's affects it was having on Superman.
I think Tom Welling plays the best "in pain/agony" act at the sight of green Kryptonite better than any other Supermans. It seems so natural when he does it.

“MS TESSMACHER!!!!!!!!”
Never gets old. 😂 😅
lol 0:18
0:18 - I love the way Superman draws back a little when Luthor calls for "MISS TESSMACHER!!!" You can see Supes thinking, "What the...?"
I love to revisit these old clips and see them through fresh eyes. For instance how does Lex change the lights above the pool when they burn out? I suppose he has the resources to have a scaffold brought down there and then poor Otis has to climb up there and change them lol.
1978 superman was a great achievement for dc
I absolutely LOVE Lex Luthor 😂😂
The way he calls his woman with all the venom he can muster in his voice 🤣🤣
This version is great!
Did anyone notice how WEEK superman's yell was when he fell in the pool!!
That @0:19 miss techmacher shout giggles me alot!
Reeve was so gallant, heroic and powerful inside this uniform that, it’s no wonder they’ve never gotten a superman to match!
Agreed,Christopher reeve was a classical actor who could portray Superman anyday at anytime were the other actors were wannabes when came to portraying Superman!
1977
Still the best Superman movie!
This is the best superman, this is what he should look like and be
Badass scene. Also, Miss Tessmacher was one of my first crushes when I saw this as a kid.
At least Superman kept his dignity here and didn't get shanked, jumped, and then sent to the hospital like in Superman Returns
@@tusharsingh9535 thank u
Lmao dude he got stabbed with a big ass piece of kryptonite that was still stuck inside him. It was obviously poisoning/ killing him very slowly!
Always found superman in SR to be a chicken shit.
Great scene! I think it's hilarious when Lex yells, "MISS TESCHMACHER!!"
'Even you with your great speed couldn't stop both of them!"
Supes then proceeds to screw around looking for a detonator for a period of time in which he could have stopped both missiles and had a nap.
Superman brings back our childhood days, there is no disagreement there.
This lex is much more menacing than the bvs one
North Korea Is The Greatest Nation, unless you're joking, you're probably only familiar with the Lex Luthor of the past 30 years or so. He was originally an egotistical mad scientist before they retconned him into a brilliant, but maniacal businessman. As for why he's not bald for the majority of the film is because Gene Hackman refused to shave his head or wear a bald cap.
Theres not even a comparison lol
My granny's cat is more menacing than Jesse Eisenberg.
I mean... Jesse was 32 looking 25 and Hackman was 48 looking.... well... 48. He looked like a perfect lex.
In a way his jovial, sarcastic humor adds to the intimidation. He’s plotting the deaths of millions, faced with the most powerful being on earth-and he chuckles in the face of all of it.
Every single goddamn line in this scene is iconic.
Always loved me some Ms Tessmocher.
Just gotta love that hair flick at 2:34 . Great movie though
CANT say LEX wasnt HONEST, he warned superman!!
0:18 2:55 The way he yells out her name.🤣
Wait, which story did Doomsday kill Luthor? I'm curious.
Jarek Gunther I think he meant Doomsday killed Superman.
Doomsday killed him too in BvS
Love how superman has many powers and the most obvious and ridicules weaknesses like a rock a green rock that was the rest pieces of you're own planet like his own home kills him like what defaq hahahaha
Sanchal Roy Which one Barry Allen and Wally West.
"I've spared no expense to make you feel right at home"
What an asshole, this luthor😂
I never noticed that when Superman is in the presences of the kryptonite, there's humming pulsing sound I guess to simulate the radiation coming off it and it's affects it was having on Superman.
That's him "hearing" how deadly it is so him.
Yes me too now!!!
I heard that too, long ago :) But I think, that sound only just he (Superman) hearing.
I love how Ms. Tessmacher fixes her hair.
0:18 Lex Luthor uses "MS. TESHMACHER!!!"
2:15 It's super effective!
I love it when superman calls luthor a diseased maniac. You can hear the disgust in his voice
Hackman was the perfect Lex. Best hero/villain combo in movie history.
1:29 the look you give someone playing a prank on you but it's really your serious phobia
"Please help me to save them!"
Flash forward to Snyder-Superman. "Let's make it look like saving people is a huge chore for me and let's also play funeral music while I do it."
O:18 Miss Teschmacher! Hahaha... I like Superman's face when Luthor called her like that 😂😂😂😂
When it's time to cash in your chips. This old diseased maniac would be your banker. Dope line
1:04 You Diseased Maniac! Lol what a hilarious thing to call someone 😄
Christopher Reeve = Henry Calvill & Henry Calvill = Christopher Reeve both are best for superman 😍😍😍
Christopher Reeve the best superman
C'mon we can never have a Lex Luthor like Gene Hackman
Lex Luthor was like..."Certainly, I do. I know exactly where it's headed... Hackinsack, New Jersey. Now get your ass in the pool." 2:08
I think Tom Welling plays the best "in pain/agony" act at the sight of green Kryptonite better than any other Supermans. It seems so natural when he does it.
Agreed the pain on his face and then the falling it gets me everytime
1977
100% agree
Well, having kryptonite appear in every other episode is a sure way to gain experience in acting in pain.
@@bangscutter That may be. But he's been great at it from the very start. I think he's just naturally good at it.
Old school Superman movies were the best
Love this film. I felt for Supes in this scene.
2:41 to 2:48...OMG when she says her mother lives in Hackensack and he looks at his watch then up at her and slowly shakes his head "no she doesn't" was one of the funniest movie moments EVER!!! I crack up laughing every time!!
I heard in the making of this, his boots kept filling up with water so fighting to make it to the surface without drowning wasn't too far from acting.
Why would he even bother to wear the boots so long as his feet were out of shot?
1977
0:18 superman´s face.
The thumbnail is a great meme material.
0:18 He screamed so loud even Superman got shocked haha
Lmao
Super hearing
