All songs on this album are fantastic, one of the best albums of the 90s decade. Check out more from this album "August And Everything After." Personal favorites include Anna Begins, Murder Of One, Sullivan Street, and Rain King. Can't go wrong.

Have always loved this song, and I’ve always thought the lyrics were about the singer’s “need” for recognition & fame, and how fulfilled he’ll finally be once everyone loves him - and even as he sings about this, he also reveals that he’s lying to himself.

Adam Duritz’s voice is so emotionally expressive. That quality is the Counting Crows’ secret sauce in my opinion.

I’m going to be 64 in July and I’ll tell you… This is one of my all-time favorite songs! The video is fantastic as well. I’m a painter and the narrative in this song is so painterly plus he mentions Picasso, my second favorite artist.😂

You will never get sick of listening to this song Harri. It is in my top 5 songs of all time, always has been, everything about it is perfect, but the lyrics I think really make it so special, along with Adam Duritz's delivery of them, it's art and you will find a new treasure in them on every listen. Thanks Harri for all your brilliant reactions. ❤

My teenage girls played this ALL the time! It got stuck in my head, and I d sing that main line, but didn't t really know any more. They d roll their eyes, and tell me I didn t know what I was singing. I just waved them away and said, "Never mind, little girl . . . me and Mr Jones -- we got a thing going' on . . . ". But they had never known about Billy Paul, and were not impressed.

Harry, you can play it again. They did a fantastic acoustic version of this on VH1 Unplugged. Look for it. It is worth it. Some lyrics change and in the end he sings, “Mr Jones and me, we don’t see each other much any more.” The protagonist reminisces about hanging with his friend and speaks of his internal identity crisis -this unclear path to happiness, love and what it means to want to be famous. The version is just a tad slower but with no sacrifice in physical performance. The lyric is delivered with so much more meaning and intensity. Would be great for you to do a comparison video! One of my all time favorites.

You should hear/watch some live versions of "Anna Begins". At some point in the middle of the song, Adam starts telling a completely new story about the main character. The band just stays quiet and lets him do it. Because new, interesting and, above all, highly emotional stories are always developing. Another example: End of the studio version of the song Mr.Jones: "Mr. Jones and me, we're gonna be big stars!" Nowadays, live: "Mr. Jones and me, we don't see each other much anymore". That's what he does: he lives his songs and they change with him.

I agree, the video and song are perfect complements for each other and somehow add magic to the mix. You will always hear the song on the radio and bounce because of the videos energy. Similar to The Love Shack by the B-52's and What's on Your Mind (Pure Energy) by The Information Society

I remember the first time I paid actual attention to this song. I was in The CC Club with a good friend, Brad, and we were just hanging out and bullshitting our way through the evening. That bar is semi-famous locally. Midway between the Wedge and Uptown neighborhoods in Minneapolis.
Heard it a few times before on the radio, but first time I paid real attention. I liked the scruffy, scratchy start. I really liked when it blossomed open with the chorus.
Not a great song, but really pretty damn good. Fit the night perfectly. Listening to it now brings me back to that rather uneventful, but super nice and dear memory of just hanging out and drinking beer with a good friend in a good bar.

Adam's story is so interesting. You should listen to his recent interviews about becoming famous and the aftermath. He became a bartender for a while after their first tour. Gwen Stephanie and other people have interesting stories about coming home from their first tours and don't know what to do with themselves because they're confused about the whole fame thing and being the regular person they are.

Counting Crows and Goo Goo Dolls are so underrated -- but well known for sure! I would love to recommend two super unreal artists (& songs) that would be new to most everyone! First is Yuna's -Unrequited Love (she also does the song Crush with Usher). She is from Malaysia and she, and this song, are like hearing the new SADE. The other woman unreal talent from Denmark is Agnes Obel -- try the song Aventine from her Aventine album. Lots of songs to try but everyone will be enchanted with this unreal new genre busting style and the caliber of composition and recording. Love your passion on all your Reactions!!
