The bird sound is made using a glass slide. In the 70 the Confederate flag was a symbol of unity for the south. People of all colors flew it. Even as late as 2005 when my wife and me traveled the south we sold beaded jewelry. One thing we made were Confederate flag earrings. We sold as many to black women as white. Only a minority of people used it as a racist symbol. As far as Skynnyd goes I dont know of a racist song they ever did and their music is celebrated by people of all races. This can be seen by watching many of the people that play tributes to them. Truth is music is really colorless.
Southerners of all races still display the battle flag(square flag) or in this case the confederate navy jack(rectangular version that csa naval vessals flew). The use of this flag by racists is a blasphemy of its symbolism.

They were working class kids from Jacksonville, Fl. They 'took" their named from a gym teacher-ex-Marine at their high school (named Leonard Skinner) who told them to stop being hippies and cut their hair in the late 60s. The guitar player said "FU" to the teacher and quit school. They're now legends. That's awesome.
A 60s to 80s Jax, OP, FL now grandma who once wore a bandana as a shirt to one of their concerts, lived it, loved it, and scold my Granddaughter for not covering enough skin. I can laugh about what the misconception of what that flag meant to me and my friends, nothing to do with skin color at all. One of my bandana shirts was that color, and if it was offensive, my boyfriend of color didn't mind it one bit. Yes, you kept the rattle on the snake - badge of courage. ❤❤
Love your Reaction! I was 16 in 1977 Times were so different, post Vietnam, Great music Everyone Loved each other or at least Respected each other a lot more. Lynyrd Skynyrd was just very proud of their Southern Heritage nothing to do with Racism. Things were very different back then nothing like today. ( Lynyrd Skynyrd Band were from Jacksonville, Florida. )
It is fun to show this to your grandkids and they say "Wow, Wish I could've been there". Then you grin and say "I was there" and watch their faces. Yeah, Paw-Paw's cool.
We rocked out in those concerts back in the day, and yes we're grandparents and even great parents now, but we knew how to party hard, went to the biggest concerts ever, owned and drove the coolest looking rides, and nobody can ever take that away from our generation.Truth🎸🎸🎤🎶Rock On
The rebel flag use to be everywhere. That was back before everyone was so damn offended and political about everything. I still see it from time to time. Your attitude is the right one to have.
I love seeing the iconic Mount Rushmore as the stage setting for this most iconic concert. I wasn't lucky enough to be at this concert, but I did go to many concerts during this period and enjoyed the many benefits of growing up during these great times. Oh, and Mount Rushmore is practically in my back yard. I am truly blessed

I am from Kentwood Louisiana, 5 miles from the Mississippi line south of McComb. I was 19 in the USAF in 1977 stationed in Silicon Valley and missed this great concert. It may have been a work issue, I can't recall, but I sure missed an epic concert. A great southern band.
Great reaction, and I agree with ya exactly on the flag. Growing up, it just always meant to me that ya was a rebel against the system. God bless you sir.

There are some white folks that i wouldnt let stick their pinky toe in my yard. I really respect someone that sees that sees past that flag to the people that dont use it as a sign of hate...just a sign of their love of the south. And like you, my grandparents and great grandparents were dirt poor sharecroppers.
Loved the reaction, greatest performance ever! And yes, a rebel flag representing the south, also a US flag representing the country, and outside the stadium there was also a state of California flag. All equally representative of the people
I got to tell ya man, I loved your comments about the Confederate Flags and especially about it being about ancestral pride and not about race (except ignorant people like the haters). If more people had your understanding and confidence, discrimination and hatred of race would have ended long ago!
It happened Oct. 20, 1977 and three members of the band, Ronnie Van Zant, lead singer and one of the founding members, Steve Gaines, guitarist and Cassie Gaines, back up singer and Dean Kilpatrick, asst. tour manager and the two pilots lost their lives.
You told the truth about, that flag. It's really good to hear a man, that appreciates the other persons perspective, and reacts accordingly. I never heard it referred to as the confederate flag, very often. It's been the rebel flag to most of the people, that like it, for a long time, and it represents an independent spirit, rebelling against control by the system.
That flag is one of the most beautiful flags in this country. And it's been misused as a symbol of hate when all it really is a symbol of rebellion against the Establishment & Southern Pride.
It was almost 10 min on album, record company & producers said song too long for radio play. The guys said that is how we play it & abt 48 yrs they still play it on the radio on a regular basis! Hey I went to see Richard Pryor in 70's & we said we felt like marshmallows in a cup of hot chocolate. Lol we loved Richard Pryor!
I'm so glad you feel that way about the Confederate flag. It's all about who's flying it and why. I was a teen when this was made and yup. I'm now old like all those in that video. I'm so happy to see you enjoy music I loved when I grew up. Case in point. Access to music was very limited back then. Like I owned the 8 track to this band. There was no internet with ITunes and such. There were record/tape stores and the radio. If you made it big it was Soul Train or American Bandstand. Like a different world. Peace and love to all and thank you again.

This performance, specifically, inspires me. To me, it is an example of the perfection that human beings can achieve. When they cooperate with each other, humans can create something worthy of the Gods.
There is an old saying (that I'm trying to start now): . "The concert ain't over until Skynyrd plays Freebird." . I mean... ...you can try to call it after the fat lady's done with her number, but we ain't having none of that.
"I wasn't ready!" LMAO Hold onto your hat man, you ain't seen nothing yet. I got the pleasure of seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert a couple of years ago. My wife bought tickets for my birthday. Awesome birthday present!! But, one thing you can be sure of, if you were there to enjoy the music, you would have had the time of your life.
I watched about 20 or 30 Reaction Videos for "Free Bird", and IMHO you did the best job. Most are so blown away they can't speak. One small point: You should have known when the crowd started going wild after being so calm during the vocal section, the song was changing.
Nothing better than southern rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd was such a great band..... one of the best in the history of rock. Another great band is the Allman Brothers. They have some great classics.
The band in a documentary I watched claimed they weren't racist at all, but when they played England the English called them Yankees. And they took offense & said he'll no we're from the South. The record label MCA started putting the confederate flag everywhere, on the stage & album covers. In the 70's the confederate flag seemed to symbolize the South more than the out & out racism meaning of today. The Dukes of Hazzard tv show in the 70's & 80's, the Dodge charger in the show had a confederate flag on the roof, but the Duke boys seemed to be the only ones in the county that ever helped black people.
I too absolutely love Southern Rock!!! You should react to .38 Special, "Rockin into the night" or Mountain, "Mississippi Queen" soon... or maybe next! You'll like those fo sho.
Great assessment, "it's all about who uses it." Lynyrd Skynyrd were not racist guys. For them the flag was about geographical region. Also this was the mid 1970's.
These guys RIGHTLY were proud of the confederacy for all the right reasons. They were not even slightly racist. Listen to The Ballad of Curtis Loew ! The guitar in the beginning is whistling like a "Freebird" !
I just saw that. That moment around 6:50 in, it's like the crowd and performance become one. I ain't never seen somebody so effortlessly work a crowd before.
This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial (football) Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. You probably know by now the band was in a plane crash 3 months after this concert. Oh, by the way, I saw Led Zeppelin in Raleigh in 1970and that was the best concert my 71 yo ass ever saw! I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions.
Grew up on zeppelin, Still remember ,when Skynard came out, 3 ripped ass guitars and a Great American southern poet Ronnie, the reason they were so good, they busted there ass, poor white boys, from Jacksonvill Fla,
R2D2 😂 yes that’s a guitar making that sound...ur hilarious!!!! GREAT song and video choice!!!!!! The radio version is also this long #SouthernProudBaby
So many people associate the Confederate Flag with racism, yet it has nothing to do with racism. The Confederate Flag is about heritage and culture. Unfortunately, some of the people of that heritage and culture are racists. So when people see the Confederate Flag, they assume that the person with it is racist. The funny thing is, I have seen A LOT of black people with it. They have it because they understand that the flag itself is not a symbol of racism, it is a symbol of heritage and culture. Those are the educated people. The uneducated people are the ones who associate it with racism. I wish more people would learn about it, so they know what it actually represents ( it is not racism ).
To many (southerners, westerners and northerners as well as outside the US) the confederate flag is a symbol of a person doing their own thing their way without the government saying do this or that. I fly a US and a Confederate battle flag in my yard, and yet I have many friends of various backgrounds and descents, all have put their hats in their hands and feet under my table.
Just proudfull music, no hate, your right that flag represents pride for family and location, not hate for some, your open mindness helpse as a white man from Pittsburgh, keep it up Homer, all respect!!!!!
Yeah, they are all grandmothers and great-grandmothers now...hell, if any of them already had kids, they could be great-great-grandmothers by now, or very soon if their kids and grandkids got busy at an early age.
my man the take you had on the confederate flag is the one i feel right there with ya! not everybody that flies one is racist. too often we are all painted with the same brush and that ain't cool!!! if guitar is your new thing check out Stevie Ray Vaughan "Texas Flood" live at the el mocambo . that brother will change your life!
I was at that show. Johnny Winter was the next band.. incredible show. Oakland Rocks. Back in the 70's the confederate flag was a symbol of limited government and personal freedom from government. It has been morphed over the last 40 years into what is today. California was all about as much freedom as possible back then. The rebel flag was everywhere. Boy has that shifted. Seems like California wants nothing to do with freedom anymore. Great reaction BTW. Hey just for you. I went to a Spinners and Temptations show a week later. Great show! Not a lot of palefaces there. Lol
Their record company refused to publish free bird because it was so long. So they formed their own record lable even wrote a song about it working for MCA
Loved your words on the confederate flag. While I am from the north and it has never meant anything to me, I was mad that people tried (successfully) cancelling the "Dukes of Hazzard" over it. There was nothing racist in that show, besides the lack of local diversity that should have been present, but that was the case in most of Hollywood shows at that point. If anything the Dukes of Hazzard may have done an above average (for the time) job of it. For the most part, black people seemed to be well presented when they were there, and were sometimes even the featured star of the week. Of course, overall the Dukes of Hazzard is not of any real importance, but it does suck that a bit of fun, harmless pop culture from that time got ripped away for no good reason.
The battle flag is pride for being Southern, it wasnt displayed to offend. 50 yrs ago divisions were not there like they are now. Afrucan Americans who have never been to Africa, display that flag and they have never and wull never set foot in that country. And white Americans arent offended by that. Our politicians want us divided.
This concert was on the 4th of July weekend. And most of the girls were there to see Peter Frampton. But I’m sure lots of them became Skynnrd fans after seeing this performance.
They deff had some 'talent' out there that day. I always laugh at the big Blonde on someones shoulders 12min. Thats someones Grandmother, an she was cooler than her G-kids.
@@yellahamma66 If she got that sunburned on the regular, she's either dead of cancer, or has skin like leather. She must have had to bathe in aloe vera the next day. You can really tell that cameraman had a thing for platinum blondes though, the way he kept going back to her.
I'm Canadian so the only thing I really know about the Confederate flag is from the dukes of hazzard. Lol. I believe skynyrd used it strictly as a prop to bolster an outlaw image.
The flag actually was the idea of their New York, jewish producer. However, Skynyrd was very proud of their Southern heritage. You hear it in the music & lyrics ..rock n roll, blues and country. Hence the song Sweet Home Alabama, it was political..saying "we all ain't bad people"!
Cool Reaction.Ryan is my 2nd Cousin. It’s all about heritage it’s not about hate some of my best friends are black guys some of the sexiest women I know are black.
Interesting trivia, this was the Rolling Stones stage. A facade of big lips and a tongue. They were told not to walk out on the tongue. It would make Mick Jagger mad. So what did these good ol boys do.
Yep. I heard Ronnie said, "Hell we would've moved the entire set up down on the tongue, but we couldn't fit the piano and a few other pieces of equipment". It was something along those lines..
No this was the Oakland Coliseum. The Stones show was in Knebworth, England. There was no better performance than the Knebworth show, they absolutely killed it. That's where Mick Jagger told Lynyrd Skynyrd to do whatever they wanted on stage except for going out on the tongue. Ronnie being Ronnie & told his guitarist to go play on the tongue. The rest is history
1977, I saw Led Zeppelin at the forum in Inglewood California, and Lynyrd Skynyrd at Anaheim stadium California 1977, I was 19, you don’t have to pick you just have fun and enjoy Great concerts.
Bosido Brown at 10:38 "They Turned It Up" : me "Oh just hang on and get ready for the ride!". And speaking of "Fun" you need to listen to "What's yo' name" .
Back in the 70’s the flag represented “rebel”. It’s the rebel flag of the south! No racism at all!
We've always called it the rebel flag.
Still means that we fly it up north also

In the 70's the confederate flag seemed to symbolize the South more than the out & out racism meaning of today. The Dukes of Hazzard tv show in the 70's & 80's, the Dodge charger in the show had a confederate flag on the roof, but the Duke boys seemed to be the only ones in the county that ever helped black people.
it's all propaganda. most ppl today actually believe the kkk were right wingers not leftists
I too absolutely love Southern Rock!!!
You should react to .38 Special, "Rockin into the night" or Mountain, "Mississippi Queen" soon... or maybe next! You'll like those fo sho.
Mississippi Queen 100%!
Some April Wine also
Great assessment, "it's all about who uses it." Lynyrd Skynyrd were not racist guys. For them the flag was about geographical region. Also this was the mid 1970's.
Kicking ass in the 70"s!!!!🤩
Love your reactions!
Just lost a country music icon: Mr. Charlie Pride. He’s an absolute legend and worth a listen. “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” is a solid choice.
I agree! Love Charlie Pride! ❤️❤️❤️
He had many other gems.
Lynyrd Skynyrd best rock band ever.
These guys RIGHTLY were proud of the confederacy for all the right reasons.
They were not even slightly racist.
Listen to The Ballad of Curtis Loew !
The guitar in the beginning is whistling like a "Freebird" !
If you want to see a lot more white people and one of the best rockin' roll performances ever check out Queen and LiveAid.
The radio version is also this long
#SouthernProudBaby
He has the right attitude and the intelligence to realize that some use that flag as a symbol of racism and some its a deep felt pride.
After all alot if men and children died fighting for that flag.
Those Boys can play 🎸🎸🎸
"Look at all them women", all them little chickies are about 70 now
Yeah, they are all grandmothers and great-grandmothers now...hell, if any of them already had kids, they could be great-great-grandmothers by now, or very soon if their kids and grandkids got busy at an early age.
But they have great stories!
You think you are cool. Your grandparents were cool.
The Guitarest of Lynyrd Skynyrd was the 3 Guitar attack
It's simple. That flag represents "Rebellion". Doesn't matter the race of the person displaying it.
my man the take you had on the confederate flag is the one i feel right there with ya!
not everybody that flies one is racist. too often we are all painted with the same brush and that ain't cool!!!
if guitar is your new thing check out Stevie Ray Vaughan "Texas Flood" live at the el mocambo .
that brother will change your life!
Gary Rossington made the bird sounds on his guitar by hitting the slide in between frets! Yes the guitar made that sound!
Love your reaction when they turned it up!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂
It's those guitar fingers that's drivin them girls crazy!!!!
Food for ur Soul❤😂🎉
just subscribed, you are killin me. Love the reaction.🤣😎
They deff had some 'talent' out there that day.
I always laugh at the big Blonde on someones shoulders 12min. Thats someones Grandmother, an she was cooler than her G-kids.
I always laugh at the same lady because of how blistered her back & shoulders are!!
@@yellahamma66 yea she was Crawfish that night.
@@yellahamma66 If she got that sunburned on the regular, she's either dead of cancer, or has skin like leather. She must have had to bathe in aloe vera the next day. You can really tell that cameraman had a thing for platinum blondes though, the way he kept going back to her.
Hands down...Lynyrd Skynyrd!!!
Welcome to the greatest American band in history .. enjoy the ride
One of the guitar players use to be called the mad hater... back when i saw him he changed hats after every song
The mad hater is the bass player the late Leon Wilkeson and he had a habit of changing hats every song and that's what earned him that nickname
@@spike3082 thank you every other members name was coming to me but Leon.
I'm Canadian so the only thing I really know about the Confederate flag is from the dukes of hazzard. Lol. I believe skynyrd used it strictly as a prop to bolster an outlaw image.
It's a sign of being a rebel. To be against what is expected.
Nope. That’s a different video.
From an LSU grad I always liked MSU fans and now I like them even more. Best reaction channel I Have ever seen. Yall go beat Bama this weekend
1977, I saw Led Zeppelin at the forum in Inglewood California, and Lynyrd Skynyrd at Anaheim stadium California 1977, I was 19, you don’t have to pick you just have fun and enjoy Great concerts.
I’m with you 💯 on that confederate flag.
Bosido Brown at 10:38 "They Turned It Up" : me "Oh just hang on and get ready for the ride!". And speaking of "Fun" you need to listen to "What's yo' name" .
Dude... You gotta check out Stevie Ray Vaughn - Voodoo Child... You'll never forget it
What you hear their brother is pure Raw Talent Gary rossington manipulating the cords with a slide creating the bird sound and the whistle at the end
Allen Collins was a guitar God ! 🎸
