Brilliant video! Yeah that was badly overheating. The 20kmh limit could be a safety feature. Shame this has happened. The cooling fans were not helping it.
That's exactly what I was thinking. AV's (any bus actually but especially AV's) are very prone to overheat when the weather gets warm and sunny. It seems that the cooling fans on AV233 does not function properly, and I'd say this is what caused it to act like it did. I never heard AV211 use its cooling fans despite being heavily thrashed and highly overheated. It's why I think the cause of its fire was the cooling fan not working to cool the overheated engine. Looking at pics the fire came from where the cooling fans are too.
+Dennis Trident I was thinking about AV211 while watching it too. 2003+ AV's seems to have a continuous slow fan running all the time. There are less likely to overheat. On AX's it's louder. AV249 was really hot the last time I got it(uploaded).
Yeah I know what you're talking about. As it overheats they get louder and louder. On the 2000-2002 AVs it just happens when it overheats. It's strange because on some 2000-2002's there's a different level of overheating needed for the cooling fans to be utilised. Some only come on when piping hot while some come on when not overheating at all. Another thing is that they can vary in loudness too.sometimes whenever AV210s fans came on when It slipped it was really loud, much louder than the video I have. I have a recording of it going balastic! Then you have some of the 02s making a weird noise whenever the fans come on that is hard to describe.
+Dennis Trident I remember getting an 01/02 just before I started understand regs more. The fans were very loud and I couldn't tell if it was slipping or not. I think I didn't know which AV it was because I forgot to look (facepalm). But it must have been AV210. I think the strange cooling fan noise as you said usually happens as the retarder is used. It is very hard to describe. On a hot day back in 2014 I got AV4(?) from Clontarf. It slipped and had its fans on.
I bet the Leyland and Volvo Olympians had less problems overheating! I've been on B7TL's but not up here. There's something about Volvo B7TL's against Olympians that doesn't quite add up if that makes sense. Thanks for sharing though 🙂👍!
Yes the Olympians were more reliable and had bigger engines. Volvo B7TLs were one of the first low floor double deckers built, so the engineering would be different. So while the Olympians were more reliable, the B7TLs had way more character!
We've had Ambassador200's from VDL in my area for a while, and they struggled reaching 80km/h under normal circumstances, but I've experienced them severely struggling during a fierce storm, not getting anywhere over 65 km/h. Along with their seriously poor headlights (even their high beams were absolutely laughable) that was sometimes quite scary in the dark, knowing that there were buses capable of coming up behind us (Scania Omnilinks or Mercedes Citaro's) who didn't have these problems. And that was with the routes here being mostly flat...
Yeah. At least I had the honour of being last passenger! Unless of course it comes back but chances of that are very very slim with AV231 and 232 gone and more SGs in service
No the new buses the SGs break down a lot due to very weak small engines. AVs are very reliable buses, they lasted this long. breakdowns are rare and usually happen due to overheating
SG's are not bad sometimes. The 2014 ones are really started to act AVish! SG6 and SG7 are/were whiny, SG66 had a whiny diff, SG43 has/had a turbo leak and SG59 also had a turbo leak. Never heard cooling fans so it's good to read it kind of does it. Maybe there's hope..
What a sad way to finish your service with Dublin Bus, a breakdown, poor girl :-(
Nice vid again! Would love to hear it use full kickdown on a flat road.

Skip to 4:18 and you'll see how kickdown really helps it gain power.

And plus the weather was really hot today to have to climb that steep hill. Almost AV abuse Lol.

My bus can barely make it to the hill but they still give us the same bus not a different

Nice!!
Was she towed away or machanics drove it
Pity.

Update: Surprisingly AV232 is still around! Even more surprising is that AV233 is back in service.
+Dennis Trident That's great news!! :)
ALX400-B727 [AV Man] yes but other AV's got withdrawn instead apparently. AV242 and AV244 gone, and I think 240 is too.
Some of the other vids deserve it!
these bus get old and break down more no wonder there for sale

+Dennis Trident SGs break down also because they're slow.
+Dennis Trident SG45 apparently had it's fans on while on idle(could be heard outside). I Doubt it's anything else.

+Dennis Trident Yeah some SG's are great! Seen SG66 today, doesn't have a whiny diff anymore.
