The Helena charactor played by Phoebe Waller Bridge had very little EMPATHY so most people are not going to find such a person as endearing. Aside from that, there were just so many things wrong with this story. So sad, it could have been awesome.
@@alucard2010Half of the people working at modern Lucasfilm aren't fans of the stuff they work on. It's been known for a while now. There seems to be contempt within the company against Lucas's classic films.
The feminist ideology is specifically built to allow the most contemptuous and resentful, the most bitter and miserable to rise to the top and usurp power.
Probably earlier versions were actually a lot worse. That's something to think about. They took their time releasing this, shot a lot of footage, and did a lot of tweaking. So this is the absolute best they could make this movie. With an essentially unlimited budget.
It was. It was gonna involve Old Indy meeting his younger self and the end Young Indy dies thus causing Old Indy to be erased from history leaving Phoebe Waller Bridge to retroactively become Indiana Jones.
@muigokublack6487 straight from the Kathleen playbook. She killed all the legacy characters in the SW sequel trilogy and wanted to do the same to Indy. Looks like Bob Iger stopped her last minute and ordered the reshoots lol
@alucard2010 I'm talking about the modern Kathleen Kennedy, you know the CEO of Lucasfilm who has literally now destroyed 2 beloved franchises. Not the one from the past who used to give coffee to Steven Spielberg.
06:20 you wanna talk about chase scenes? How about when Indiana dragged himself under the truck in Raiders! That simple yet complex scene required ZERO CGI but it’s still as amazing today as it was 45 years ago.
Even more amazing when you recall it was done by stuntmanTerry Leonard who did the same stunt the year before, and got RUN OVER. Luckily by "just" a stagecoach but still put him down for awhile. Evidently the ditch that had to be dug under the truck was for his massive balls(!)
@@LarryFleetwood8675 No, it's because audiences today are too jaded and short on attention to appreciate the movies they're seeing. No movie will ever stand up to that level of scrutiny. If you invested time or money into watching a movie, then you really ought to do yourself a favor and just chillax. Sit there and watch the movie that you're watching. If it's really that bad, you can always leave or watch something else, but watch what's on the screen while you're watching. If you want to do the hyper-picky criticism, that's fine, but at least watch the movie through ones before doing it. You'll thank yourself later for not having deprived yourself of that much. At the end of the day, it's hardly the studio's fault that people are going to movies deliberately looking for problems rather than trying to enjoy it. It's not like I didn't notice the ridiculousness of the main villain getting clocked by that water spout in the opening series and then being without any obvious disfigurement when he shows up again. I just didn't fixate over something that doesn't really matter.
Short Round should have been back with Indy in this, another opportunity forever lost by Disney and KK… they never got Luke, Leia and Han together in Force Awakens if you recall.
Winslow Arizona, across the street from the posada hotel is the brown mug cafe. On the wall above one booth is a framed notice: Harrison Ford (the actor) sat here.
I watched this movie today, and I loved it. Was it perfect? No, but what movie is? Did I have fun? Yes, definitely! Many scenes were great and classic Indy, like the opening Nazi chase scene on the train-amazing! The moto cab chase through Tangier was a real blast. The horse parade scene in New York City was great. The underwater scene and tomb exploration were perfect. The finale in ancient Sicily was wonderful. Overall, I loved it! You want to throw rocks, fine. But I am tossing roses.
I heard that they did numerous re-shoots and re-editing due to horrendous early test screenings which explains the squirrelly patchwork nature of the movie.
I can completely relate to your point about wanting to make videos about movies being a love letter to an actors career rather than something negative, but it's getting increasingly difficult to do that these days...
Not surprised by your review James. Im still surprised they made an Indiana Jones film 1 more time. Hollywood needs to start investing in new ip instead of lazily trying to reuse some of the great franchises of 80s. I don’t think i saw RotLA in theaters but I for sure saw TofD and both films kinda terrified me as a kid lol.
They kind of had to after the way that Crystal Skulls went over. I just don't get why it took 15 years for it to happen. People were already complaining about how creaky Indy was in that movie. It's also worth recognizing that times have changed, so little of what I've seen in terms of criticism seems to be coming from people who were willing to sit through the movie and just take it in. It's a bunch of hypercritical stuff that wouldn't matter to anybody at all if they weren't deliberately looking for it. I definitely noticed most of these problems, it's just that I got to enjoy the movie because I just ignored them. I feel very fortunate that I got to enjoy the movie, whereas so many others ruined it for themselves. It's not a perfect movie by any stretch, but it was fun and sometimes that's enough. It's definitely not a boring movie, I had no problem sitting through it and I can rarely sit through an entire movie without wandering away to do something else.
I remember as a kid in my grandparents' countryside home exploring around with my satchel, a rope on my shoulder, and a big stetson hat larger than my head, looking after lost pre columbian temples, and hidden treasures...That's my level of fondness for tthe Indiana Jones character! Trunk of The Past, isnt? Jake, Sarah, and Corky find an island of the last living remnants of the Egyptian civilization...I loved it for its fantastical, Supernatural background. After all, its creator, Donald P. Bellisarius, draw his inspiration from old pulps, like George Lucas.
Dammit get out of my head! The reason the NY scenes look so strange and digital is because they were filmed here in Glasgow. I watched them do it. We quite often double for American cities here.
I wasn’t pretending I enjoyed the experience - I enjoyed the experience, and I’m such a big fan of the series that I have pets named Indiana and Sallah. The word you used that I agree with is “joyless”, and that to me stems from the tragedy that had befallen Indy and his lonely existence in 1969. I wish they hadn’t gone with a story where he seems to have lost his passion, but that’s life. This movie would’ve been even more implausible with a 70 year old Indy still acting like it’s the late 1930’s. I loved the story-Crystal Skull was brutal, in my opinion, but I thought they wrote a really clever story around the Dial. Helena is a complicated character for me to digest but I certainly don’t project the kind of hatred on her that I’ve seen elsewhere. It’s not as good as the original trilogy, obviously. It’s much, much better than Crystal Skull. I’m sorry you feel as strongly as you do. I know the feeling and it sucks.
I expect that there will be a reevaluation of the movie over the coming years. I' saw it on 6/30, and I agree, it's definitely better than Crystal Skull and not quite as good as the original trilogy. I do think that people who have decided that they won't ever watch are missing out on something. I have no intention of ever watching Crystal Skull again, but I may well wind up buying this one to go along with my box set of the original trilogy. Overall, it's a middling Indy movie, assuming that you can set aside the criticism to just enjoy what's on offer.

How did Mads Mikkelsen's character survive what happened to him on top of train???? And even if he survived, no evidence of any injury from that train fall, when he reappears later in the 60s????!!
I tuned completely out when in the middle of the Indian Ocean, bad guys innately knew the exact harbor Indy was going to (which was over 2000 MILES away according to the travel dots,) and arrived there at just about the same time despite the large vessel being damaged by an explosion.
“Raiders of the Lost Ark” will always be the greatest movie in the history of mankind. They can make sequels (good or bad) all they want but it will never tarnish the greatest movie in the history of mankind. 👍
Idea for next (FINAL?) movie - “Indiana Jones - LEGACY” Premise: It’s a drizzly, overcast day and we start with a large crate being returned to the wax exhibits of Indy, Marcus etc. in the Museum (as in Raiders) - there’s one empty space. The crate is opened to reveal the statue of Helena Jaw/Feeble Wallet-Drain (could be the original - difficult to tell!). As it’s being placed back on its stand, someone mentions that it mysteriously disappeared one evening; no-one knows what happened to it or how it was returned. Still, no-one actually missed it. At all. A few days later there’s a family/school tour visiting and 2 of the kids (NOT precocious/dislikeable, instead average, reasonably smart) are rather taken with Indys statue - they having read up on his exploits. They notice the statue of Marcus is holding a drawing/image of the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol (yep, from the start of Raiders) and mention it’s a pity Indy never got to get it back from “That guy to took it”. One of them recalls bits of something (s)he once read about the Idol - “If you hold hands with heart that’s pure, your dearest wishes will endure”. So they hold hands with the Marcus statue and wish Indy had indeed recovered & displayed the Idol. The Marcus statue sheds one, small, unseen tear. That (stormy) night [natch], Marcus comes alive and meets ‘the Council’ - wax figurines who also have temporary life - they advise him there may - may - be a way to obtain the Idol - snag it, the clues are somewhere about the museum. GO FETCH, Marcus! Not so easy, considering Indy has said he once saw Marcus getting lost in his own museum - high jinx ensue. But NOT in ‘Night at the Museum’ style, rather something NEW and CREATIVE, involving some brainwork, dangers and IMAGINATION, Disney. Not to mention effective (but not overused) CGI - just enough for the story. Main movie happens, a few laughs/jumpscares along the way - final scene shows the Indy statue holding a replica of the Idol (OR IS IT THE ORIGINAL?????). Just brainchompin’. ua-cam.com/video/DPe7RS9eN7Y/v-deo.html
Joyless is the key word. I kept waiting for Indy to get that sparkle in his eye as he went through the events of the film and made discoveries, but he just stayed dour and depressed. The final act is fun and I thought was the only part that took any real chances. I was fine with Crystal Skull and this one has some moments, but overall forgettable.
16:32. They won't because they'll think the older films are old and boring. Another problem with films these days is they must appeal to people with low attention spans. They only like fast paced action, CGI eye candy and explosions every 5 mins.
Why save the spoilers for the end? The inherent meaning of the word implies there is something of value to begin with for the spoiler to spoil. Not the case with this movie.
Huh? Holbrook was firing back after the plane/dragon started taking arrows. The guy in front of him at the door of the plane took an arrow at one point.
Knowing that this was to be the final Indiana Jones film, the decision to introduce a new character (Helena) with the hope of setting up a new series of films (which was clearly the intent) was a mistake. IF Indiana Jones is to be given a sidekick/partner then it should have been an established character from his past. Someone that the audience already knows and has an affection for. They also should have taken the runtime into consideration from the beginning in order to make sure it had a similar length to the runtime of the previous ones. When you're making an adventure film which is supposed to generate excitement and thrills you don't want the pacing to drag or to be overly long, but this is about half an hour longer than the others.
Was it though? It was definitely gonig to be the last one with Harrison Ford, but I don't think that it's guaranteed that there wouldn't have been more had the film not bombed so badly at the box office. There had been the intention of making the series more like James Bond with a rotating cast of actors playing the lead. But, that seems to have fallen by the wayside even before this movie came out. It definitely could still happen when people start to reevaluate this movie and whether it's really a bad film. So much of the criticism I see has little to do with the actual movie and more with the political views on "wokeness" and the movie isn't any more or less woke than previous ones were.
Now, you're just being hurtful. Crystal Skulls was never as bad as people were saying. It just had a tacked on ending that didn't follow from the rest of the movie. I've personally been saying that for well over a decade now, and people are finally admitting it. How long until people have to begrudgingly admit that maybe this movie isn't bad, either? Sure, it's not as good as the original trilogy, but it's hardly a bad movie.
My immediate question was its comparison to IJ4 and you got that out of the way real quick, and in a very objective manner I think, so thank you for that. I mean, I have to go see it for myself, but I just don't know how I personally will react.
The movie was totally ok, definitely not boring or bad. Too long, yes.Too many car chases? Yes. But it is fine adventure movie, better than most movies being put out there in past years. And Skull is far from horrible movie as well, apart of monkey scene.
A hundred percent agree, they have been making amazing chase scenes for a long time. Buster Keaton nearly perfected them. You could even take it back to 1903 and “the great train robbery”. This movie is going to lose so much. George Lucas, we need you back man. Please.
I remember seeing the teaser trailer for this film and I knew right then…I wasn’t going to see it. From old man Harrison being pieced together by stunt doubles and de-aging vfx, to the title of the film itself (Dial of Destiny?! Really?!) to the hiding/quick cutting of certain action sequences, so you didn’t get to see Harrison in action for too long. …I knew I wasn’t going to give it a chance. And your review confirmed everything I felt when watching that teaser. Keep fighting the ‘good narrative’ fight Mr. Hancock! Been following your content since DARK Season 1 🫡💪🏿
If your going to complain about the title did you complain about temple of doom or the cheesy Indy books like curse of horror island or the lost treasure of Sheba? Oh yeah the toxic internet wasn't around back then 🤡
I took a couple of Tylenol but I do love Harrison Ford I only went to see this movie only to see Ford don’t give a damn if he’s 80 don’t give a damn it’s the script that was bad.
I think this franchise needs a "successor" for the lead role and a new direction. The last Crusade is imo the conclusion for the series, the next two movies (including this one) are failed attempts to milk the franchise. The original trilogy was also during the ww2 era, which gave it a more "heroic" vibe. Afterwards they replaced the Germans with the Soviets, it was not a bad idea but was executed poorly... They should find a younger actor who resembles Harrison Ford and shoot a new trilogy. Star Wars should do the same with Mark Hamill.
@@kaykutcher2103 People hated it in Crystal Skull because it wasn't established early in the movie, and the franchise was set around the supernatural, not aliens. And not even just aliens, but interdimensional ones with absolutely no reason to expect it coming.
There's a scene early on where Indy calls an artifact a "fake. A recreation." That's what this is. A movie trying so desperately to feel like the other films, playing it so safe, like trying to navigate a booby trapped maze, trying not to piss off fans, that it feels like a hollow recreation, with no identity of its own. A fake. And in the process, it ended up pissing people off anyway.
sadly, there is some continuity from "crystal skull:"indy is growing older, the world is changing, and younger people who are actually representations of our era gradually push him aside. for all we know, there may yet be a sixth film, in which he is actually killed. this would be the indiana jones equivalent of the last star wars trilogy.
Here's what they should've done: Little kid walks into a living room carrying Indy's hat and whip. "Grandpa, Grandpa, what are these?" Indy, sitting in a chair, gets up and takes them, puts them on and tells the kid he's going to tell him some stories. Through a series of flashback from the previous movies and additional scenes, he tells the kid of his adventures. Marion comes in and adds to the story. Later, Mutt comes in and shares some stories, additional adventures that he had with Indy. At the end, Indy tells the kid that he's retired and given all that up. The kid asks Mutt: Dad, do you still do that? Mutt looks at Indy: Not as good as the old man. (cue music) Indy: That's right kid. He stands up, wearing the hat, we get a shot of that famous silhouette as he walks over to his family and embraces them. Fade to black.
Excellent idea, like an Indy themed Evangelion Death and Rebirth with additional recaps of short adventures. It could have been a fraction of the cost to make, and would have been much more impactful. They don’t want to make good movies. They just want to demoralize us.
Spoil away James. I have ZERO interest in this movie and I grew up with the OG trilogy and love those movies to death. Crystal Skull suuuucked and this is just simply avoidable trash. Thanks for the review tho James. Your comments about movie making are SPOT on.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wasn't bad at all. It was the very next logical place to go being after WW2 it was all about UFOs, Roswell, the Cold War. Indiana should have been just a professor of archeology and had a protégé going into the field with Indy accompanying him on occasion. At least for the Dial of destiny There's a story there
Crystal Skull... wasn't bad at all? Not at all? Not even the tiniest bit? Like maybe the South American warriors hidden in the walls of the ancient ruin for... thousands of years, I guess? Even that part wasn't bad? Or like maybe the presence of Shia LaBeouf? He's... good, is he? Sorry, I don't buy it. Crystal Skull was crap.
Where did the money go? Who pocketed the cash? Is Disney being stripped through the back door? Why did the Financial Officer resign? Shareholders, IRS, FBI due diligence needed.
If you want joy, don't hire Mangold. Phoebe was not bad, she just got some of the stunts that belonged to Indy. And too much drama and violence (what's the point of murders in NY?) And if you put in Archimedes, make a good scene with him
I don't know why this is, but I keep watching reviews of this turkey, even though I have no interest in seeing it and gave up on the genre years ago. Maybe it's just gratifying to see a cinematic dinosaur/behemoth/juggernaut like this slide into oblivion.
Could not agree more.. Fantastic review absolutely nailed it... I was so wanting this to be good but deep down I knew this would be the end result.. I actually called it on twitter a while ago..
What surprised me the most is that Phoebe-Waller Bridge plays this asshole - they want to set her up for her own Indiana Jones Disney+ show, but she is just not likable. Kate Capshaw (Willie Scott) and Karen Allen (Marion Ravenwood) had this chemistry with Indy, which was really fitting. I couldn't feel that in this movie.
that "beautiful" line is also cringe. I'm pretty sure that was PWB's idea. She needs to know that she is objectively not beautiful. Show, don't tell, and you can't tell me something is beautiful, when my eyes tell me it's not.
I haven't seen the movie. But I see the pattern. Just like with the Star Wars sequel trilogy, it is just action-packed with member-berries using tropes that are tiresome for fans who want a good story that makes the character justice. It is so cliché having Indiana Jones as an old man with sorrow and regret - lured out on a new adventure. This is what they have been doing to other franchises that they have tried to reboot, like Star Wars and Star Trek: Picard. I'm for once happy that they did not kill off Picard. This is only appealing to people who are into it for the action, and familiarity with the character and with how the story is unfolding. But the question that we should ask is whether they really should have made the sequels at all.
great review ,thanks im sooooooo sad ,went to the first movie ,in 1981 when i was 16 saw the temple of doom in New york had to stand in line for two hours ...just very bum out
I’m glad you mentioned about the colours and digital feel of everything. There’s no natural sunlight in this movie. In raiders it was bright and clear, but in this, every shot feels as if it’s buried behind over grading and fog. I couldn’t stand this movie, one of the worst I’ve seen in decades.
So sad they couldn't either have stopped after Crusade, or just recast and continued on ala Bond films. I would have been totally cool with that, but no, not what the creators wanted. Sometimes creators just don't really understand what they have created. Franchise could have made them many more $, and left much greater a legacy. I don't care if I ever see this.
Spending $300 million dollars in a movie which is the 5th and last installment of an really old franchise is already risky. At least Mission Impossible and Fast franchise have recent entries from a couple of years ago so it’s easy to project the potential return. Not to mention if their intention is to have Indy pass on his role to PWB, that’s even riskier as she’s not a household name. They need to fired whoever’s in charge of the budget, aka Kathleen Kennedy as this was a lost costs from day one.
Good review and fair enough if you did not like it. Yes there was too much CGI and a few too many chases in the middle but I thought the last 45 mins was fab and the last 5 a perfect ending for Indy. I am a massive fab too of the films. Raiders is a classic 10/10 movie and almost perfect, TOD is very good. When I saw last crusade at the cinema aged 16 I was underwhelmed but overtime I love it. Crystal Skull I did not like at the cinema and on repeated viewings doesn’t get much better with so much wrong with it. Walker Bridge is good and you mention the banter between them but let’s not forget that Indy bickered with his co- characters in all the films especially Kate Capshaw character Willie Scott in TOD. This film is never going to recreate the bravure of the early films and should not do so due to Ford’s age but adapts well to the situation and to cap it all the ending is perfect in my view. 8/10 film
Reusing character tropes and formulas. Kathleen Kennedy is basically how John Lasseter was running Pixar and Disney's animation divisions. Stories are often compromised to his likings. No producer would repeat the twist villain formula four-five times in a row that he did. When Lasseter left Disney, both the animation divisions (WDAS and Pixar) got new CCO's who are spearheading them into new directions. Pixar is more filmmaker driven as seen in Domee Shi's Turning Red and Peter Sohn's Elemental. WDAS' identity is breaking away from the Pixar tropes infused into its storytelling as seen in Encanto and their upcoming Wish which is telling a new fantasy story but at the same time celebrating 100 years of The Walt Disney Company and the animated films that came before it such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
Great commentary. Your last point about a new generation is spot on. Why you only have 30K subscribers is beyond me. Perhaps more hate and less intelligence is the answer.
I'm a little gutted I was hoping this would be a good to ok send off for the character of Indy its crying shame that it has to end this way but like you say maybe the youths will dive back in time and find the magic
Why the hell is no one bringing up the fact that he's fucking 80!? Isn't it ridiculous how an 80 year old is fighting with fit young men? Isn't it ridiculous how he is still swinging that whip around the place? Are people just afraid of being ageist or something?
Turning Indiana Jones into a grumpy old Clint Eastwood is not what people want to see with a sidekick who bullies him😒
Only 1 person wanted to see that: Kathleen Kennedy
She literally just made the movie for herself lol
I don’t think she ‘bullied’ him anymore than Willie Scott did in TOD

The exclusives are rubbish, and many of the titles from the past that were good will be deleted due to expired contract and you got to go to another streaming and pay even more for the same movie that will likely be deleted again anyways. 'Film' is a physical entity, and it doesn't matter whether it is a DVD/Blu Ray or it is a goddamn original 35mm print, people must realize that they need to own art in their hands, and good art at that especially.
The Helena charactor played by Phoebe Waller Bridge had very little EMPATHY so most people are not going to find such a person as endearing. Aside from that, there were just so many things wrong with this story. So sad, it could have been awesome.
That's because the people involved in the movie don't really understand the concept of "empathy", or human emotion, for that matter.

It was. It was gonna involve Old Indy meeting his younger self and the end Young Indy dies thus causing Old Indy to be erased from history leaving Phoebe Waller Bridge to retroactively become Indiana Jones.

While I sympathize with you from a visual standpoint, nobody was put in harm's way for a movie stunt. Fair trade.
Which is why movies today suck so badly, because the smarter audience spots the fakery that cheapens everything.

This was a very interesting video lots of good information to watch. I loved how he included indiana jones clip in there.
Idea for next (FINAL?) movie - “Indiana Jones - LEGACY”
Premise: It’s a drizzly, overcast day and we start with a large crate being returned to the wax exhibits of Indy, Marcus etc. in the Museum (as in Raiders) - there’s one empty space.
Thanks for the review! I really enjoyed it. I hope the big budget studios take this to heart and learn from it, but I'm not holding my breath.

That's a fair point but the rest of the review I can't disagree with.
Whe I saw "Joyless slog devoid of any imagination," I immediately thought you were talking about Asteroid City.
I re-watched Crystal Skull after Dial of Destiny to compare the two, it genuinely didn't seem so bad anymore.
David Keopp also was credited on the script to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
My immediate question was its comparison to IJ4 and you got that out of the way real quick, and in a very objective manner I think, so thank you for that. I mean, I have to go see it for myself, but I just don't know how I personally will react.
Here we go. 😂

Why continue the franchise and do it further damage? Just end it, and come up with a new idea.

Here's what they should've done:
Little kid walks into a living room carrying Indy's hat and whip.
(cue music)
Indy: That's right kid.
Great idea
Spoil away James. I have ZERO interest in this movie and I grew up with the OG trilogy and love those movies to death. Crystal Skull suuuucked and this is just simply avoidable trash. Thanks for the review tho James. Your comments about movie making are SPOT on.
Whilst Crystal Skull looked too digital, this movie looks cartoonish.
Well, it looks bad too because of that butt ugly drained grading that everything must be wrapped in these days.
Not that difficult to do? Where can we see some of the epic chase scenes you've created?
The de-aging could have been better, however it’s done for a reason not just for the sake of having using CGI
Where did the money go? Who pocketed the cash? Is Disney being stripped through the back door? Why did the Financial Officer resign? Shareholders, IRS, FBI due diligence needed.

Indiana Jones and the “Dial of Disney”, a.k.a The Dial of Franchise Destruction.
It isn't Lucasfilm that's running both Star Wars and Indiana Jones into the ground, it's Kathleen Kennedy
I think a smaller budget would have benefitted this movie. There was an overreliance on cgi during dull action sequences.
Great review.
But the question that we should ask is whether they really should have made the sequels at all.
great review ,thanks im sooooooo sad ,went to the first movie ,in 1981 when i was 16 saw the temple of doom in New york had to stand in line for two hours ...just very bum out
"A joyless slog" isn't as bad as most reviews. Maybe they'll quote that on the back of the DVD.
8/10 film
few typos in there, sorry
