@@ebooibo34 There's no need to enter the codes because they aren't observed. But if you want to try, all the buttons are present and have been determined by their function in-game. Plenty of discussion about this in the comments section.
I have the same Mortal Kombat mini arcade and even though I am disappointed by the fact that it's the censored Genesis version and blood codes are disabled, it's still pretty cool and I enjoy playing it. I grew up on the Genesis version, which is why I enjoy it so much.

It's bullshit it won't let you enter the cheat and blood codes. More bullshit it only has the Sega graphics and not the arcade. I have fallen for yet another example of false advertising.
My favorite version is the Jakks Pacific Plug And Play version. It lacks background animation and the sound is midi, but they still sound good. The character movement s and fatalities are all Arcade perfect which makes it worthwhile to find. It is also Rated M.
Thanks for a fun review. I appreciate how you are not a nitpicky as other reviews. People think for 20 they are getting an arcade duplicate... I think for the money it looks fun.

The 2004 Plug-and-play MK is not the Amiga version. It's an original port, believe it or not. Apparently Jakks Pacific got a really good deal on a bulk order of an obscure 16-bit CPU from a company called SunPlus, which allowed them to keep the price of the units to a reasonable cost. So all their plug-and-play games from that era use it, meaning all the games are actually new ports, not ROMs of previous ports, unlike this device.
I just found this last weekend at a Walmart in my girlfriends neck of the woods and absolutely had to buy it because MK is in my blood! I turn into a 10 year old kid whenever I find MK stuff like this out in the wild. I wanted to see what others had to say about it. Yeah, it sucks that the fatalities and blood/gore are missing. And yes, the sound is also a little choppy and in mono. But you know what? I still freaking love LOVE this thing! I think it's a steal for $20 bucks, especially if you're an MK fan. It has the nice little LCD screen, the controls handle stupidly well for what it is. Il ove the art work. I's just a very very cool collectible for an MK fan with a highly playable and just as addicting version of MK! A portable arcade version which I have never seen before in my life. I think it's completely understandable that the game is censored (I see others saying it's the genesis port, I had it on there and don't remember it being censored like this but I believe it). Despite it being 30~ years old now, it's still an M-rated game, and the one that was basically responsible for the ratings association to be created! It would be cool if there was an adult M-rated version available. I've a software dev by day and I'm tempted to take the thing apart and see what's running it. Probably a proprietary board that you can't do anything with. It'd be cool to hack it and put the uncensored game on it. Or even put one of the other ROMs for MKII on it or something. Maybe replace the board with a rasberry pi....
I'm really glad you're enjoying it, Edward. It's far from "bad," but with the MK franchise being so well-known for the over-the-top gore, omitting it entirely (even overriding the blood codes) really dilutes the nostalgic experience. Plus, that '90s "gore" is pretty tame by today's standards, so leaving it in wouldn't have all that scandalous, would it?

The version you're playing on it is the Sega Genesis version, there's a code you have to punch in to unlock the blood and to get the uncensored fatalities, but it does NOT work on the mini arcade game. Otherwise I love it, it's my favorite mini arcade out of the whole set, I've been a Mortal Kombat fan since I was 9 years old.
Hey John, the MK hand held game runs on the sega gensis rom.....you have 2 ways to access the cheat menu to utilze the fatality code......#1...during the code of honor screen, press low punch, low block, low punch, low kick, low punch, low block, low block(also known as the ABACABB Code) and press down , up , left. left, low punch, right, down (also known as the dullard code) at character scrolling screen. you'll get an extra menu choice and will open up the cheat code......good luck
This is an odd one. The game looks like the SNES version did (near arcade quality) and yet has the Genesis "fatalities". These being the fatalities that were shown if the "blood code" was not entered.

I’m a big mortal Kombat fan, and I just got mk11. But I still wanted to have the original port, and I found out arcade classics also have this! Thanks Jon!
If it has a Genesis on a chip, it should be possible to dissemble it and run different games. Not a single video on youtube about anyone hacking this though.
I've spent the last week trying to find videos about people trying to hack these consoles, and no luck. The closest I came was a guy in imgur who was able to put a Zero Pi, reusing the keys, but using another screen. I guess the main issue is the logic board is a mystery, and there is no way to hook up the small screen to a Pi, since there is no controller board for it available.
The fatalities aren't there because it's the genisis port so you have to put in a,b,a,c,a,b,b on the warrior code screen for the original fatalities and blood.

It most definitely the Genesis MK1 version. The ‘code’ screen is where you enter the blood code, which was A B A C A B B and enabled the fatalities, if my memory serves me correctly. I’m guessing on this thing that code would be low punch, lower block, low punch, low kick, low punch, lower block, lower block based on the alternate genesis 6 button controller
I had read that somewhere. Being an old guy I never played it on Genesis, only the arcade. Too bad the code wasn't available for me to use for the review!
Yes sub zero for life because I have this exact mini arcade and all I use is sub zero because he is the only fighter I can beat every fighter there is with him, but if I use some other fighter I can not even get to the mirror match.

I very nearly bought this unit but shortly afterwards Arcade 1up released their MK unit with the arcade ROMs. Dodged a bullet there. Incidentally, the Arcade 1up cabinet is totally worth it.
This seems to clearly be the Sega Genesis version. Also, the opening screen that goes into the meaning of the word "code" was where you'd enter the blood code on Sega Genesis. I'm wondering if that code works here? It was ABACABB - Which would maybe translate to LP-LK-LP-HK-LP-LK-LK ?

This is the exact port of the Sega Genesis version. For that version, when the screen shows the info on the “code” at the beginning, you have to input “A,B,A,C,A,B,B” to turn on the blood and fatalities. The “A” button corresponds to “Low Punch”, “B” to “Low Kick”, and “C” to “High Kick” on the Genesis controller. I wonder if you tap “Low Punch, Low Kick, Low Punch, High Kick, Low Punch, Low Kick, Low Kick” on your Arcade Klassics Mortal Kombat during the “Code” screen at the beginning, will it activate the blood and fatalities?

The Super Nintendo version of Mortal Kombat had much more creative fatalities. I much preferred the Genesis version of the game versus the Super Nintendo, but only if the blood was turned on for the Genesis.
Yeah, that's not a fatality. That's just a complex uppercut. 😜 After much research and experimentation, it appears that although this is the Sega ROM, the blood mode code is nerfed. So you can't even enable proper fatalities.

Let's assume that the controls aren't ABC/XYZ since the Blocks have been put on the end. A=Low Punch, B=Bottom Block, C= Low Kick So it could be Low Punch, Bottom Block, Low Punch, Low Kick, Low Punch, Bottom Block, Bottom Block But it could be Upper Block instead of Bottom.

As a 90s kid, the wallpaper from the arcade it's incorrect. That's Scorpion from Ultimate MK3. It suppose to have Johnny Cage with a flying kick. The game it looks like Sega version & no blood??

I actually don’t like the new design of the cabinet with the buttons at an angle. It definitely improves the playability, but at the cost of a more authentic looking cabinet. I don’t think most of us were buying these to play seriously, especially a SIX(!) button game like MK. If we’re thinking about more from the perspective of collecting/displaying, the more authentic cabinets are preferred. These angled buttons make it look like a Tiger Electronics handheld.
I don't know a thing about Mortal Kombat, but my sons received this hand held version from someone for Christmas this year and want to know how to throw things. Can you help with that? We've searched all over the internet and can't find the answer. Thanks for any help you can give.

I bought mine a month ago. Finally played it a few days ago and was like...wtf. No blood? I was gonna see if I could upgrade the screen to an ips. but why bother now. Luckily I have the Arcade 1up machine.

This is definitely running the Sega Genesis version of the game. Sounds and looks the same. And the button layout is just like a 6-button Genesis controller. That's why there's no blood by default.

I finally got one it's not bad it's the sega version of mk I thought it would be comparable to the sega game gear version or even game boy but no it plays like the tv version of mk 1 thumbs up

That's a lot of caps, Steven. 😅 The gameplay is solid for sure, and while you can "do" fatalities, they are the bloodless versions -- watered down for children, but marketed to adult collectors. I think that's the disconnect most people see.
You got that right! Sub-Zero is the character to trust! If your not playing Sub-Zero, your not playing Mortal Kombat. Sub has been my favorite since I was first introduced to MK. At school all my friends say they're team Scorpion but I'm sorry to tell them if they chose Scorpion they're ready to lose. Nah Im messin, haha Scorpions an excellent character its just that Im the oddball who teams up with Sub-Zero.
Looks like the Sega Genesis rom ported over, but without the blood code put in, which is why Sub Zero just upercuts instead of doing the spine rip. I wonder if its possible to put the blood code in during the start with A, B, A, C, A, B, B....or their equivalent buttons on this version? Also try the D U L L A R D code on the main menu screen....if it's basically the Sega Genesis Rom, it SHOULD work....and you can turn fatalities on from the additional menu. Anyone tried this yet? I don't reeeally want to buy one unless there's a way to get the blood/uncensored fatalities in...but maybe it's still worth $20 though...I mean, that's pretty cheap for some decent portable entertainment...too bad you can't blue tooth link 2 arcades together to play with 2 players...but then it'd prolly be like $60, LOL!

Great review!!!! Yeah the creator of the machine explained that they went for the Sega Genesis port but also they took the fatalities away since this machine is marketed more towards kids. Personally I feel like kids play way more violent games than this and 8/10 kids probably have MK11 anyhow. I still might pick it up since MK is like my main fighting game that I have loved for years tho.
I saw a yt short with Kano doing laser beam attack.... That's crazy! In mk1 he doesn't have that move, how is that possible. Also, looks like the genesis version, can you confirm that?

When you started the game you were supposed to type A blood code if you go to UA-cam and search it up do will be able to get the blood code and that's how you get uncensored fatality well you just performed an censored fatality you need to type the blood code that way you don't get censored fatality

There's no fatality combination guide in the manual, so I don't even know how to do fatalities. I don't have a console to play mortal kombat on either, so I have nothing to complain about and I'm still fine with it.
Good for collection display, but mega oof to the arcade/mk fans. NGL, the Sega Genesis sure has a groovy music, especially the theme at the beginning, but it’s ruined by bad sound quality and the fact the creators disabled the cheat code. TBH, if they wanted the censored version, might as well bring the SNES version.
If it's like the sega version then the cheat code that let's you do the fatalities should be intact just put the code in and you should be able to rip the spine out

Yes, and no. Dozens of previous viewers have suggested this in the comments (give them a browse), but we have verified that while this is the SEGA version, neither ABACABB nor DULLARD unlock the gory fatalities.
The blood code works on all units for sure. You'll hear the "ding" when the proper code is accepted, but the fatalities are never bloody. Can you verify, or maybe newer units are different? When did you purchase?
Not all finishing moves show blood when you use the blood code for example scorpion's toasty fatality or sonya's kiss of death and liu kang's cartwheel uppercut they never had blood only ones that show blood are kano's heart rip rayden's lightning head popper johnny cage's uppercut decap and sub-zero's spine rip
This isn't the genesis version as you can see in the video when the continue menu popped up after he died it was the continue menu from the super nintendo version

Does that brand as well as the all fun classics mini arcades Have a way to keep them in demo or attract ...meaning they won't cut off After a set. Of time like the my arcade micros... Hey, thanks for watching. Since they're all battery operated, the seem to, by default, turn themselves off after a period of inactivity. I get that they make awesome display pieces and leaving them on is something a lot of collectors desire, but short of modifying the internals, it's not just a setting.

I bought this and Spy Hunter last year @20 a pop, not bad imo. I love the cabinets and authentic sound but the gameplay is butchered and is stupid af; unplayable. This is purely eye and ear candy. It looks good on the shelf 💯 and good with your favorite figures posed with it (AvP for example) 💯

Well, sort of, MR. It is the Sega version, and it does recognize the blood code(s) when entered, but they don't take effect. Neither ABACABB nor DULLARD activate blood mode, and all fatalities are nerfed.

It's not great. No blood, no fatalities, the music and other sfx sound off, and worst yet is, in at least the one I got, the joystick doesn't work quite right. The thing was only $20 though, so not bad.
Your rog the reason why people play mortal kombat is to have fun and to play the story and to have a favorite character and to beat the game and the fatality
Not true on all fatalities. Scorpion still burns the opponent into a skeleton, Kano still rips out your heart. But no blood. Sub zero was disappointing. Liu Kang was always a lame fancy uppercut. Sonya still does kiss of death. Haven’t tried Raiden yet.

The Jakks version from15 yrs ago was a developed port, not an exact arcade port from what i can remember.
This is the Genesis port so the blood and fatalities should be accessible via a code.

It's far from "bad," but with the MK franchise being so well-known for the over-the-top gore, omitting it entirely (even overriding the blood codes) really dilutes the nostalgic experience. Plus, that '90s "gore" is pretty tame by today's standards, so leaving it in wouldn't have all that scandalous, would it?

So anything that was deemed "not too brutal for kids" like Scorpion's fire fatality is there, but the ones that were behind the blood code (like spine-ripping or dismemberment) are not available.
The version you're playing on it is the Sega Genesis version, there's a code you have to punch in to unlock the blood and to get the uncensored fatalities, but it does NOT work on the mini arcade game. Otherwise I love it, it's my favorite mini arcade out of the whole set, I've been a Mortal Kombat fan since I was 9 years old.

Hey John, the MK hand held game runs on the sega gensis rom.....you have 2 ways to access the cheat menu to utilze the fatality code......#1...during the code of honor screen, press low punch, low block, low punch, low kick, low punch, low block, low block(also known as the ABACABB Code) and press down , up , left. left, low punch, right, down (also known as the dullard code) at character scrolling screen. you'll get an extra menu choice and will open up the cheat code......good luck

This is an odd one. The game looks like the SNES version did (near arcade quality) and yet has the Genesis "fatalities". These being the fatalities that were shown if the "blood code" was not entered.

If it has a Genesis on a chip, it should be possible to dissemble it and run different games. Not a single video on youtube about anyone hacking this though.
I've spent the last week trying to find videos about people trying to hack these consoles, and no luck. The closest I came was a guy in imgur who was able to put a Zero Pi, reusing the keys, but using another screen. I guess the main issue is the logic board is a mystery, and there is no way to hook up the small screen to a Pi, since there is no controller board for it available.

The fatalities aren't there because it's the genisis port so you have to put in a,b,a,c,a,b,b on the warrior code screen for the original fatalities and blood.

It most definitely the Genesis MK1 version. The ‘code’ screen is where you enter the blood code, which was A B A C A B B and enabled the fatalities, if my memory serves me correctly. I’m guessing on this thing that code would be low punch, lower block, low punch, low kick, low punch, lower block, lower block based on the alternate genesis 6 button controller

That's true on the Sega, Vance, but not so on this Basic Fun unit. The Blood code (and even the DULLARD code) have been nerfed on this unit.

Yes sub zero for life because I have this exact mini arcade and all I use is sub zero because he is the only fighter I can beat every fighter there is with him, but if I use some other fighter I can not even get to the mirror match.

Unfortunately not, Eliseu.. I know there's lot, but if you browse some of the comment thread you'll see we identified the Genesis ROM and a lot of experimentation that in jack-squat. All the unlock codes (including ABACABB & DULLARD) are nerfed so all the most visceral fatalities are permanently watered down.
I very nearly bought this unit but shortly afterwards Arcade 1up released their MK unit with the arcade ROMs. Dodged a bullet there.
Incidentally, the Arcade 1up cabinet is totally worth it.

This is the exact port of the Sega Genesis version. For that version, when the screen shows the info on the “code” at the beginning, you have to input “A,B,A,C,A,B,B” to turn on the blood and fatalities. The “A” button corresponds to “Low Punch”, “B” to “Low Kick”, and “C” to “High Kick” on the Genesis controller. I wonder if you tap “Low Punch, Low Kick, Low Punch, High Kick, Low Punch, Low Kick, Low Kick” on your Arcade Klassics Mortal Kombat during the “Code” screen at the beginning, will it activate the blood and fatalities?

That actually is the fatality when the blood code isn’t activated. The original Mortal Kombat had a blood code because of parent controls.

As a 90s kid, the wallpaper from the arcade it's incorrect. That's Scorpion from Ultimate MK3. It suppose to have Johnny Cage with a flying kick. The game it looks like Sega version & no blood??

I actually don’t like the new design of the cabinet with the buttons at an angle. It definitely improves the playability, but at the cost of a more authentic looking cabinet. I don’t think most of us were buying these to play seriously, especially a SIX(!) button game like MK. If we’re thinking about more from the perspective of collecting/displaying, the more authentic cabinets are preferred. These angled buttons make it look like a Tiger Electronics handheld.

I bought mine a month ago. Finally played it a few days ago and was like...wtf. No blood? I was gonna see if I could upgrade the screen to an ips. but why bother now. Luckily I have the Arcade 1up machine.

This is definitely running the Sega Genesis version of the game. Sounds and looks the same. And the button layout is just like a 6-button Genesis controller. That's why there's no blood by default.

I used Scorpion's fatality and it worked, it's just *hold block, up, up* (while mid range)
To be certain, fatality inputs are observed, but the fatality isn't performed -- just a bloodless, watered down finishing move.

That's a lot of caps, Steven. 😅 The gameplay is solid for sure, and while you can "do" fatalities, they are the bloodless versions -- watered down for children, but marketed to adult collectors. I think that's the disconnect most people see.

You got that right! Sub-Zero is the character to trust! If your not playing Sub-Zero, your not playing Mortal Kombat. Sub has been my favorite since I was first introduced to MK. At school all my friends say they're team Scorpion but I'm sorry to tell them if they chose Scorpion they're ready to lose. Nah Im messin, haha Scorpions an excellent character its just that Im the oddball who teams up with Sub-Zero.

Looks like the Sega Genesis rom ported over, but without the blood code put in, which is why Sub Zero just upercuts instead of doing the spine rip. I wonder if its possible to put the blood code in during the start with A, B, A, C, A, B, B....or their equivalent buttons on this version? Also try the D U L L A R D code on the main menu screen....if it's basically the Sega Genesis Rom, it SHOULD work....and you can turn fatalities on from the additional menu. Anyone tried this yet?
I don't reeeally want to buy one unless there's a way to get the blood/uncensored fatalities in...but maybe it's still worth $20 though...I mean, that's pretty cheap for some decent portable entertainment...too bad you can't blue tooth link 2 arcades together to play with 2 players...but then it'd prolly be like $60, LOL!

Great review!!!! Yeah the creator of the machine explained that they went for the Sega Genesis port but also they took the fatalities away since this machine is marketed more towards kids. Personally I feel like kids play way more violent games than this and 8/10 kids probably have MK11 anyhow. I still might pick it up since MK is like my main fighting game that I have loved for years tho.

That’s clearly the genesis ROM you can tell by the ‘code’ screen and 6 button layout. When u tried the ABACABB code did you use the bottom 3 buttons?

When you started the game you were supposed to type A blood code if you go to UA-cam and search it up do will be able to get the blood code and that's how you get uncensored fatality well you just performed an censored fatality you need to type the blood code that way you don't get censored fatality

There's no fatality combination guide in the manual, so I don't even know how to do fatalities. I don't have a console to play mortal kombat on either, so I have nothing to complain about and I'm still fine with it.

NGL, the Sega Genesis sure has a groovy music, especially the theme at the beginning, but it’s ruined by bad sound quality and the fact the creators disabled the cheat code. TBH, if they wanted the censored version, might as well bring the SNES version.

The blood code works on all units for sure. You'll hear the "ding" when the proper code is accepted, but the fatalities are never bloody. Can you verify, or maybe newer units are different? When did you purchase?
Not all finishing moves show blood when you use the blood code for example scorpion's toasty fatality or sonya's kiss of death and liu kang's cartwheel uppercut they never had blood only ones that show blood are kano's heart rip rayden's lightning head popper johnny cage's uppercut decap and sub-zero's spine rip
This isn't the genesis version as you can see in the video when the continue menu popped up after he died it was the continue menu from the super nintendo version

Hey, thanks for watching. Since they're all battery operated, the seem to, by default, turn themselves off after a period of inactivity. I get that they make awesome display pieces and leaving them on is something a lot of collectors desire, but short of modifying the internals, it's not just a setting.

Well, sort of, MR. It is the Sega version, and it does recognize the blood code(s) when entered, but they don't take effect. Neither ABACABB nor DULLARD activate blood mode, and all fatalities are nerfed.
@@GenXGrownUp sorry I meant without the blood code on, so the fatalities are different for almost every1 except scorpion and Lui Kang. It was the same way on genesis until the blood code is done
The dullard code only unlocks the cheat menu and the other one enables blood and arcade fatalities
The box does say 90% gameplay, I like the idea but the no fatalities is a definite no go for me.

It's not great. No blood, no fatalities, the music and other sfx sound off, and worst yet is, in at least the one I got, the joystick doesn't work quite right. The thing was only $20 though, so not bad.

Not true on all fatalities. Scorpion still burns the opponent into a skeleton, Kano still rips out your heart. But no blood. Sub zero was disappointing. Liu Kang was always a lame fancy uppercut. Sonya still does kiss of death. Haven’t tried Raiden yet.

Agreed, I tried both the blood code and cheat menu code with no success. Still hoping they make a Killer Instinct one, that would be awesome.

Hey, Chris. I know there's lot, but if you browse some of the comment thread, you'll see a lot of experimentation that resulted in jack-squat. All the unlock codes (including ABACABB & DULLARD) are nerfed.
