- Before Metal Slug came out on the Neo-Geo from SNK, that same team created an awesome arcade submarine shooter called In the Hunt.

00:00 - Intro - Ігри
In the hunt's Arcade Machine has an actual model submarine in water at the top of it. I played at the Galloping Ghost arcade and it makes that arcade machine look so much cooler.
I love learning the connections between games, the studios that developed them and the individual's involved. It's fascinating how so many of our beloved games and series are often literally a few degrees away if not directly inspired by other familiar games.
Great vid btw.
I'm really glad you made this video. As a result, I bought one of the (overpriced but whatever) PS1 copies from ebay, and absolutely love it. It may not top Einhander, but might be my second favourite PS1 shooter.
Interestingly enough, my version (original Longbox) most definitely does not have that audio skipping you mentioned.
+Orpheusftw [Coury] Whoa really? That would make sense I guess, if only the second printing had it. Any possible way you could put the ripped soundtrack online for download somewhere? I'd love to have a good version of it!
+My Life in Gaming Sorry, my mistake. Upon trying to rip it, I did in fact notice the annoying skips. I was hoping THQ just assed up the reprint, but my PS1's TV doesn't have the best audio, so I just missed it at first.
At least the arcade OST sounds good. I'll keep rolling with that.
I always thought they might be from the same team. The artwork was so similar
Looooooooooooooved In The Hunt on my PS1. Such an awesome game. Beat it multiple times. I had same reaction when I found out it was made by same people as Metal Slug. I was like "oh, damn, that DOES make so much sense! they are almost identical in terms of fun, graphics and animation style".
I saw this in retro gamer for the first time, and a few weeks later came across it on the Mac App Store that had an Irem collection for $2. It has like 12 games and includes in the hunt. Bought it immediately. It’s a fantastic game, and the whole mechanic is still a little unique to this day.
I cannot overstate how much I love Metal Slug.
After a couple years of "Hunting" for a decent japanese copy of "In the hunt " I barely got it this past monday. I put the game inside the disc tray of my Japanese PS2, and also turn on my Bose surround system, to finally enjoy this game, it's so so cool! And you're so right, the later levels can get really hectic ! But the good gameplay, superb graphics and amazing music, and Sub mechanics, it's quite a delightful gaming experience, it's not perfect, but for sure it's fun and challenging lol
Thank you guys for making this video!
The Saturn's abilities to render and manipulate what's commonly referred to as "2D" (sprites and layers, both generally tile-based) is greatly overstated. Yes, the Saturn has the hardware ability to employ whiz-bang raster effects with the aforementioned assets but most of the popular 2D games of that era never used them, mostly because like with In the Hunt here, they were arcade ports and the hardware these games ran on in the arcade weren't very powerful at all. The CPUs for In The Hunt's arcade hardware were NEC clones of an underclocked 286 and an even slower 8086. There was nothing remarkable about the video chipset for this system, either. The point is, it doesn't take any kind of special hardware to render the kinds of 2d games that were popular in the 32-bit era so all this gamer talk of the Saturn being some kind of 2D powerhouse is a load of nonsense (and if you ask me, sour grapes because the console they invested in failed. And for the record, I was one of and still am one of those Saturn owners and I still prefer the Saturn over the PS1 but facts are facts.) Garfield on the Atari 2600 is a 2D platformer that manages parallax scrolling, for crying out loud.
In regards to porting your typical 2D arcade games -- such as the omnipresent 2D fighting games, the shooters, and every other such game based on 68k and 68k-class hardware, the only advantage the Saturn has over the Playstation is the RAM cart upgrade. That's it. In fact, the Saturn is deficient in this regard because it can't even display the most standard resolution of the day, 256x224; which is probably the most baffling decision regarding the entire Saturn hardware's design.
But regarding Gaiares, you are 100% correct. Why people keep pointing to Thunder Force III as the best shooter on the system is beyond me.
CplEthane yes, these machines didn't have very strong cpus but a good ppu and a ton of memory. Thats why the saturn works better on these games, they have more memory and can handle Sprites much better than ps1
Don't forget GUN FORCE II
Yeah, Gun Force 2 is awesome. I play it with Coin Ops.
Oh... my.... god....
Ive played this game!!!!
This game got me into metal slug! I played the game at a bar once when i was very little. But cause my parents rarely went back to that bar, i needed to find out whar the game was called. After research i found metal slug and just assumed that was it as it looks similar. But ive just remembered that metal slug wasnt actually the game i played!!! Mind blown, coury....
My god I do love the animation in this game. Hope to own a physical copy of it some day.
Got an original longbox not jewel case style) PS1 version of this game. It rocks. Proves the Playstation could do great 2-D with a good developer handling the porting.
you should check out Gunforce 2 by Irem it has Metal Slug Sounds and is the same team that made metal slug. Many Irem games have that amazing art style . I started collecting the Irem Arcade pcbs 15 years ago and Gunforce 2 aka GeoStorm is an amazing game. Others to check out are also Armed Police Gallop , Undercover Cops , Air Duel .
I love rewatching these old episodes. And i just noticed Coury is wearing a
"Game Sack" t-shirt. 👍 Thats awesome, considering I found the MLIG channel BECAUSE of Game Sack! 🤜🤛
In the hunt is such an amazing game.
Hey Corey, I noticed you have a CD jewel case for your copy of In The Hunt. I thought the NTSC release was only in the Long Box version....Do you have the PAL version or NTSC-J ?
I ask this cause I have the disc for PS1 and really want a jewel case with artwork and manual....I am hoping you may know of a place to get reproductions
Almost got that Gaiares pronunciation right. ;-) It's actually "Guy-ah-res".
I have the urge to play this. Will have to see if it got a UK release.
Damn the graphics do look VERY similar to Metal Slug, I went and looked up how much the game cost and even the Japan version is pretty damn expensive. That sucks.
on the arcade was this a board or cart?
Have seen this video on other channel but yeah, I prefer watching this on MLiG channel. Great stuff though.
+Firis Rozley [Coury] This is the beginning of the process of moving our vids over to our own channel. We'll be releasing each of the vids we did on Rerez on Weds mornings til we're done - but don't worry, this won't be replacement content for new stuff. We'll still be releasing new vids on Friday mornings!
+My Life in Gaming what do you mean by that? Do you have other UA-cam Channels as well? I'm confused...
+zackdufois This series, "Before & After" was posted on another channel, Rerez TV since February of this year. As of last week, we decided to end that agreement and we're in the process of moving all of the videos over here, onto our channel. We did 8 videos total - with two of them now released on this channel. We'll be adding the rest, one every Weds morning, to this channel for the next several weeks.
We are doing it this way because we didn't want to just bombard people with a whole bunch of videos at once, but we also don't want viewers to think that we are using them as brand new videos on our channel. We'll continue to have new vids every Friday that haven't been released anywhere else.
+My Life in Gaming nice thanks guys. your video quality is absolutely amazing
Sega Saturn owners deserved a better port of this game. Such a shame.😢
Both the saturn v& ps1 version of this game are average ports from eachother.
Reupload?
+Ruko Michiharu [Try4ce] We're re-uploading all of our Rerez videos here. The Rerez group was a good experiment, but the numbers suggested that it was best to just focus on our own channels instead. So we're releasing these on Wednesdays until we've moved them all over here, and we're still releasing all-new episodes on Fridays!
***** Oh I see... So you're leaving Rerez? It's alright...
I'll be looking forward to new videos ^^
You mean you couldn't tell by looking at it? ROFL literally the very first second I saw it I thought "That looks like metal slug." 1 second.
Terrifying 9/11 flashbacks
