- This video was taken directly from @avi_kaplan on his Instagram Story and shows him and other Acapella Academy singers performing the famous barbershop tag titled "Cry".
Make no mistake about it, that's 100% the baritone bringing out Avi's overtones.
I can’t tell if your joking lol
@@chunkycheese5854 not at all. Avi has a voice with rich overtones. The baritone is on what's known in music as a dominant fifth. Between the two of them, the "5th" overtone of Avi's fundamental is being amplified by the baritone singing very precisely in tune and making it ring prominently. Takes skill on both ends!
@@Awegner176 Holy crap that is actually so interesting, does that type of stuff happen in choirs as well?
@@chunkycheese5854 you betcha! Listen to some barbershop quartets like Acoustix, Boston Common, Bluegrass Student Union, and Platinum to hear more examples of that characteristic "ring"
@@Awegner176 Truth. 👍🏽
Wow...how can someone's voice be SO rich in overtones? Damn, Avi!
Goosebumps everytime
Jeez amazing note Avi, best bass in the world!
It sounds really low but it's actually not, granted low notes are quite, BUT OMG HE HAS THE SOUND OF A CHOIR IN HIS VOICE
@@kn3236 that is true! :)
That low note is the Bass low Eb2 of which Avi can go an octave an a half step lower whereas other great Bass singers such as J.D Sumner and Ken Turner and such like can go much lower but Avi has clean and clear notes so I can understand how you might think it is low when really it is just a clean low chest note
@@antemahoney4376 it's actually a D2, I'm a bass-Baritone and I can hit it, doesn't mean it's not powerful, my lowest chest note is an A1
@@kn3236 thanks for the correction also I am a lyric Bass and my range goes down to a Gb1 in chest on a good day
Yes Avi 😍😍
Please... Somebody... Tell me this is the start of something MORE?!? Rattle me to my Bones! 🙏💚
To my knowledge, Avi has done Silvery Moonlight as a tag too about five years ago. Not sure if there's others he has done though. :P
iHeartBeatbox Avi could do an entire Barbershop quartet EP... would be amazing.
Now, I can sing that low, but I can't resonate like a tugboat
WOW!
They sound like gods
What note does avi hit at the end I’m guessing anywhere between Eb and C I can’t tell
Michael Messer D
Drops to a short C before the D on the last chord too :D
Rektangle no he doesn’t
It's an Eb
Arne Uten it’s a D
Do I hear an undertone in the beginning before switching to the "I made you cry" part?
It sounds like an A0 is being produced. such a clear undertone.
Yep, what the other guy said
yeah the best part of the tag is not the last chord, it's the 3rd one. There's a screaming undertone that produces the low root.
@herringhome definitely not an A0 that is so low you can't here it, I'm the bass in my quartet and it is almost nearly impossible to hit a note that low not even JD Sumner could
I think that's a D1
+BHS Bass I definitely understand, I'm a fan of just about everything. Although barbershop is a more recent fancy of mine, I've come across your channel previously and videos of yourself. I'm the other end of the spectrum, a tenor. I totally get what you're saying about Avi. Brett does an amazing job on Tennessee Waltz, hitting that Contra B. And Martin sings a Contra A on Glans Over Sjo Och Strand. Just some things to look at. And then just look up Down the Mother Volga by Kovcheg to see Pavel ending on Contra F#'s like nobody's business. I've got to say that as acapella basses go, Avi has such an amazing quality and depth to his voice. Definitely not a voice I'd compare to anyone in terms of performance. I've been following PTX since the sing off days and even his new group, Avriel and the Sequoias. He hits a low B in Fields and Pier, alongside Kevin playing the cello. Just some things to check out!
iHeartBeatbox - Oh yes! That one is on Ringmasters Christmas album! I remember the first time I heard that I was just blown away. Beautifully sung by Martin. I think in terms of range, Avi Kaplan and Martin have very similar ranges. Their projection range seems to end somewhere around C or B but can go lower. And Brett is just an absolute beast. When I was talking with him in Orlando recently, he told me the previous morning he had a LOW E. Yes, I mean E1. And I believe him! He said he doesn’t use that 2nd gear for recordings. Have you heard Brett’s Bb1 at the end of Old Friends? Let’s also not forget he was in Nightlife! 2 time gold medalist
BHS Bass oh gosh. I actually haven't heard that one. And I'd definitely love to come to the next year's convention to meet any and every singer, would be nice to have people out there I know but I don't have a quartet so it is what it is. Especially since I'm based in the uk where barbershop isn't a huge thing. What an opportunity it would be to meet Brett. A low E is crazy, a note Avi only gets through growling and one that not many men can duplicate even on an early morning. I'm just generally in awe of basses at all, I bottom out at a G#2 in modal voice. Dreams of a tenor eh
iHeartBeatbox - Go watch it when ya can! “Masterpiece - Old Friends”. Absolutely mind blowing tag. Interesting story about that finish that Brett told me. Listen to it first! It makes it even better! And you will LOVE international! I’ve only been to 2, and loved them both so much. You see so many Barbershop legends there, I even caught a short glimpse of Joe Connelly. I saw Tim Waurick (he’s my friend actually so that one was expected) and I sang with Vocal Spectrum and I met Jim Henry as well, and just too many to mention haha. It’s great! And yeah Brett said he had never tried that growl stuff, he ACTUALLY has a low E in full voice... He said it’s quiet and not really useable but it’s in his range. Which is frightening to think about haha. My very bottom is a G1, hoping that’ll lower over the years haha, and a C1 in subharmonics which I only tried once. I’m not a huge fan of anything like subharmonics or growl but I see what I can get now and then. Back to Brett again, he was one of the nicest guys I met there and we talked for quite a bit and he’s just a very humble and nice guy. You’d like him! Awesome guy
Dear gosh, that song is ear candy if I've ever heard it. And by lord, that tag is gorgeous. U really do hope I manage to make it out there. I think Ringmasters the ones I'd love to hear most, Instant Classic too, and a couple others. I'm trying to build up how long I can post to maybe someday match Tim and Jakob since both sing in my range. Now to low notes, a G1 is frighteningly low for me, over an octave below my comfortable lowest. Growl has more use in acapella music that's with individual mics. A low E is just crazy to me and I'd love to hear Brett one day. Hopefully we cross paths next years internationals! Would be lovely to meet a current barbershop singer.
iHeartBeatbox - The thing is about that tag, it wasn’t written with a low B flat... Brett literally just tried it and got it on the first try. They ended up keeping that last version of the tag... awesome! I would’ve never known that
This is in the key of D major
Is the last note Made with Some Sort of subharmonic technique? Anybody? Pls
Nope, this is his chest voice.
@@iheartbeatbox there's no way, that Is so loud and low, that HAS to be a diffrent thechnique, it has to be😭😭😂
@@alejo5930 Nope, D2 Chest Voice.
It's pure chest, crazy isn't it, that resonance...
yea not that low but it’s the resonance that’s crazy
Can someone pls tell me the chords for this I’m dying to know
The original is in F# Major, but it's been transposed to many different keys. The link to that version is here. www.barbershoptags.com/tags/Cry.gif
iHeartBeatbox thanks,
What exactly is a barbershop tag?
Matthew Dockray So it's kinda like a coda. It takes you to the end of the song and it's a finale to the song basically. Often in barbershop the tag is accompanied with a "post" (a super long held out note) and that's a distinguishing feature. Also dominant 7 chords are the heart of barbershop.
Jake Harvey did this tag originally come from the end of a piece then? If so which piece?
Originally it was composed for Side Street Ramblers by Brian Beck, the song was "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry". They sing the tag in this clip, ua-cam.com/video/Kt3n11RwGws/v-deo.html at 03:26
That tag was never meant to sung that low
That's not even low. Also, who cares how high or low it was written? Keys are changed all of the time.
@@hypercubemaster2729 where in the world that's not low? XD 💀
@@elrincondeeuclides You should know the answer to that. Avi sang an Eb2 (actually Edb2): That's it. That's easy for any real bass.
@@hypercubemaster2729 Well, for a bass could be really easy compared to other voice types that maybe cannot even reach the note, but that doesn't means the note is not low lol
Maybe for a bass is relatively not that low because sometimes they can get a ton lower, but in general is still low hehe
This is in the key of D major
