I wish my friends would speak english good enough to understand this video, because everything you said could help them understand that i didn't just got "the talent to draw" overnight, but really just from drawing every dang day. It's frustrating when you are the only artistic friend in the group 😅
This is so true. The one thing that truly trumps talent is hard work. I wish I'd been able to focus on more on my art years before I figured out I wanted to be an artist. I had to do a lot of catching up and still am. (I'm enjoying the journey though- every now and again with hiccups but that's life.)
This video was uploaded at a perfect time for me. I've been practicing drawing for about month now and been feeling a bit discouraged about not seeing immediate improvements. I constantly have to remind myself that the good artists I've seen have been drawing every day for years while I'm just a beginner.
This reflects my own understanding. Concerted, focused practice can give you amazing results within a very short timeframe. Even a beginner can be taught to draw realistic water within a very short time if simply shown how and a bit of focus. Of course, there's a 100 more things to art than just being able to draw realistic water, but it's a mental library you build up over time, and it shows the value of focusing on one area at a time. It reminds me of a general tip for learning in general, and that is to focus on only one thing at a time. This is because our brain is far more effective at focusing and learning 1 thing at a time, as opposed to 3 or four different things simultaneously.
I just shared this to like 50 friends who really want to start art and leaped to “copying” big time artists art styles copying in this case is tracing, copying etc.
Thanks! I actually think doing master studies like that is super valuable- but tryin to be/expecting to be AS GOOD as the artist youre copying immediately is a one way trip to frustration
Brookes has said this already but I also think copies/studies are a simple and valuable way to learn basic drawing techniques as a beginner. Obviously that shouldn't be a crutch for you throughout your entire career, and in no way should you ever pretend that your copy is your own work, but I don't think I would ever discourage a beginner artist for copying every once in a while. Anyways, sorry for the lengthy comment. Cheers!
A detailed grayscale paper drawing by a professional artist can take anywhere from a half an hour to an hour and a half. And that's before you add the background. When I swapped from paper to my drawing pad, and started working on improving my work, it would take me a good hour just to finish the character outline. There is no quick fix for art. There have been a couple times where I have rushed drawings. When I was finished I would compare them to drawings I actually spent time on and my rushed drawings would become an eye sore.
If you can't be patient with your art or even this video (which btw is only ten minutes of a dude having a normal conversation) then you should reconsider another passion. There are no shortcuts with art and you shouldn't want any in the first place. Art is about the practice, the patience and the process. Value every second of it! As always, great video ;)
Taylor Eggleston instead of quitting altogether, I'd suggest that this hypothetical person try practicing *patience itself*. There are many proven methods and things one can do to improve their focus and commit. It would be a shame for someone to give up on their passions because they've got attention span issues, especially when there are so many ways to cope. Source: I have severe ADD ***edit*** : I misinterpreted what Taylor was saying, please disregard my ramble about attention spans
Flat Spoon Very true. I did not mean folks with ADD or ADHD. I mean negative commenters who do not focus on the value of the video of what Brookes is saying and focusing instead on the fact that the video is “taking too long” in their opinion. I have close family members that suffer with ADD and ADHD and so I understand and deeply respect the struggle one has there. Finding a route that works for you with art is what is best. And all I meant was that patience is an attribute all artists must attain if they want to build solid results. There are no short cuts and we as artists should actually be glad about that fact and cherish the journey.
Yeah I think Taylor is really speaking to the attitude or lack of acknowledgment of what it takes, and not actual attention span limitations, which I agree on
Taylor Eggleston Yeah I agree 100% My initial comment was formed early in the morning with zero caffeine intake so I definitely misinterpreted what you were trying to convey. My bad. 😅
This is such a fantastic video. Practice is the key and no true art is produced through shortcuts. You have to take time to learn your craft and love every minute of it. Everyone wants a quick way to success but finding your style is found through the process. I appreciated your honesty and building up the point through the pace of your video! Genius!
I started and practice drawing everyday now, at least try to do it everyday, and I have found that character designing is what I would love to do for my future. I’m quite young, not even an adult. I plan to practice shapes, lighting, anatomy, construction, all of that stuff. I’m glad I found this channel. It has further inspired me to do my best and achieve goals I would have never had. Thank you for your tips and advice. I have looked through you learning character design website, but I’m not sure if I’m even old enough to enroll for. I might also not be able to commit to it right now because of my skills it self. I have just subscribed and I plan to check in for new and old videos!
Hey there, that’s so awesome! There’s really no reason the course would be too advanced or off limits for you as a teenager- no better time to get serious about character design, honestly! Let me know if you have any questions!
Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge ah, that answers my questions. Thank you for replying! I would like to ask how you were moved and inspired to be what you are now, and how did the first few years go for you? Again, thank you for your help, your videos are very help ful
Can you please make a video on how to make a character stand out from their background, when they're supposed to blend in? For example a ninja who wears black in the shadows, or a soldier who wears green camouflage in the forest.
TheApoke there will usually be a noticeable difference in value and hue between the subject and the background. Even if they're both "green", the shadows of the forest and deep browns of the trees will be very dark in contrast to the warmer earth tones of a ghillie suit (for example). I'm not Brookes obviously but I hope it helps
I have to thank you for all the important advice you provide all the time! But I also wanted to say this for a long time:your characters are so cute, especially your mascot! :)
I'm not drawing every day but I am trying to draw more and I'm forcing myself to draw things I was avoiding before. These things involve new poses, humans in general, hands, feet and paws. Focusing mainly on humans right now(I never realized we had so many curves before.) but I'm also working on doing something beside side views for animals. I'm learning my weaknesses as I go and am actively working on them. And despite not drawing everyday I'm still seeing a lot of improvement. I just dread when I get around to practicing on noses. I hate them more then hands I think.
I am really glad I found your channel. This video is really encouraging and helpful. I wish I had more confidence and started drawing earlier instead of thinking there are bunch of artists an universe better than me so I should give up and think about something more practical to do for living and hobby. Thank you!
Thank you! This was very helpful. I always draw my characters in a cartoony style and for around a year now I feel like I’ve just improved in my quality and look but nothing in style and I want to learn more and practice but sometimes I have no clue where to start and this helped me to understand a little bit so thank you! And that sounds great can’t see what’s new about it! Hope ur doin well and have a good day😌🙏
I appreciate the idea, and agree with it. Obviously on more than just art -- writing, for example, or video editing. I was amused by the point about no jump cuts... all the more because I was watching the video in 1.75 speed (because who's got time for ten-minute videos these days?).
This philosophy really helps me relax and not stress about figuring out my trajectory because I know that my incremental work will pay off in the long run.
thank you for the info, as a trying to improve artist. I don't really tend to take shortcuts but more of me trying to break the habbit of staying in my comfort zone. I do practice a thing here or there but, I tend to stick with drawing what I know. I find it funny because out of the several years I've been drawing or painting, I've never really thought of doing Practice of things in portions of sessions. I always thought of doing them in full sessions. anyway thank you and hope your day goes well.
Great advice as always Brookes! I tend to go to line-of-action.com and use the timed sessions of gesture drawing there, yet sometimes I find myself wondering if I'm doing it 'right' Though most probably it's me thinking way too much on 'how would they do this in a classroom'.
Helpful and informative as always! Do you think you could make a video on tips for making a group of characters for a story like the Mane 6 in MLP or the Autobots in Transformers? I’m trying to make sort of a group of “main” characters and I am really struggling. Thanks!
So in other words, there is no shortcut, you just need to practice more. Its videos like these that make me wish I was going for a degree in Graphical Design/Animation rather than Game AI Programming. Either way, good video as always. :)
Hi, love your videos and hope you can help me with an issue I’m having. So I have a cast of characters I want to do for a game, a pixel game. Each character is apart of a circus and has a power that goes along with their act/role in said circus. One of my characters is a tattoo man, his tattoos can come to life and I completely adore this concept and I want to keep it so bad. I’ve watched your video when an idea just doesn’t work and I really would hate to give up on this character. He comes out very segmented and unfinished, it’s nearly impossible to suggest what his tattoos are unless I completely blow up the size ratio of the sprites. Do you have any suggestions for me?
Truer truth has never been truthed before. :) This coming from someone who has literally no patience when it comes to self-improvement and practicing my work, lol. Ya just gotta bite the bullet and do the work.
I am new to this channel and I wanna say that I think it's extremely great to have a youtuber who is experienced in art, give advice to people who seek to become artists! I have one question(though it has nothing to do with this video):How do I find your webcomics?I'm new into these and when I searched for them,I've found the comic with the wanderer who had his memories stuck in a crystal, but I wasn't able to turn the page, plus it's the only one of your comics that I've found. Is there a specific website? EDIT:Okay,I've figured out why I wasn't able to turn the page on "Denizen",but I still have trouble finding your other works.
Well I would'nt completely dismiss the quickfixes, as there is a lot to be learned from them as well. Basically those show your mistakes directly. Just don't get reliant on those quickfixes or think they can replace practice.
Hey Brookes, since practice is a good way to get better, how can I find what I need to practice personally and how exactly does one practice or do studies?
Brookes, there seems to be a major problem that I’m struggling with. The story I want to tell seems a bit too much like a certain popular indie game, and the characters that I make take inspiration from other characters that other people have made. I’m afraid that if I show off the finished product I’m going to get bashed for not being original. Any tips?
Saw this on patreon and came back to add some traffic here ^ ^. I was wondering if anyone here/you know how the waiting time is for the video critique gift is :3 I'm too excited (my signup would start september)
Thank you so much for joining! At the moment, I think you'd be about 8th in line for a critique, which would mean just a few weeks after you submit the art.
I think when they say how do I fix this? You should just point out their weakness after telling them what the fox is. Like oh fix the arm, then say oh and do anatomy studies of the arm.. etc. maybe thats a good way. cuz something scary abut criticism is sometime ppl give it when it isnt asked for, like yo Im just drawing today and Im having a bad day, I dont care that the face looks crap lel
I'm not sure I understand you 100%, but I think I'm good on how to actually answer the questions, this video was more about addressing an underlying attitude.
Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge What? I never noticed! Is this your first time starting up again since you first started streaming a while back?

Thank you very much, I really appreciate that 😄

I constantly have to remind myself that the good artists I've seen have been drawing every day for years while I'm just a beginner.
Thats a great attitude to have! Dont give up when youre just getting started!
I agreed, become good at art is a form of art itself. Patience guys.
Hehe, good way to put it!
This reflects my own understanding.

Speaking of being patient. I had to sit through a 2 minute long add before I got to see the video. T'was worth the wait!
great advice, you should always practice
This really changed my perspective on practising and making art. Thank you for that!
Preach
🙌🙌☺️

You’re quite welcome
Are you gonna stream again :c twitch misses you
Have streamed a few mondays this past month!
Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge What? I never noticed!
Is this your first time starting up again since you first started streaming a while back?
You look like Paul Rudd....
This was the most discouraging thing I've ever watched.
In what way?
