I have so much to say to help you on your GFriend journey I don’t know where to start. Haha 😛. I have added a few comments here and there in reply to existing comments when they mentioned something already I wanted to expand on. But first of all thank you for taking the time to listen to GFriend. I know now that you will fall in love with them just like I have. You were spot on with everything you said in your video, so I can tell already that you really feel GFriend which is key to fully enjoying their music. Emotion needs no words or language so they transcend boundaries with their beautiful songs. Gfriend was under source music, a subsidiary of Hybe. Their ‘disbandment’ was the most shocking and scandalous one in K-pop history. The members were still doing activities the night before before it was announced that their contracts were terminated, leaving the fanbase and the general K-pop public in shock. The reason behind it was never disclosed but the members made it clear that it was not what they wished, in fact their leader Sowon publicly rejected the idea that they were disbanded, and that they would reunite (which is what is happening now). There are theories about what went down in source music but nothing has been verified. The latest plausible theory is that Min Hee Jin (I’m assuming you are aware of the situation between her, new jeans and Hybe) was brought on in source music to guide the new batch of trainees, which included some New Jeans members. She ended up poaching them and insisted that Hybe set up another subsidiary ‘ADOR’ to debut the new group. As a result Source music lost their trainees and their investment and decided to discard Gfriend (the group that single-handedly sustained source music until they were bought up by Bighit) in order to pool resources to debut an alternative new girl group - Le Sserafim.

Korea voted in a poll back in 2021 for the Kpop group with the best discography in the history of Kpop. GFriend won with a landslide of votes scoring more than double the votes of the world famous boy group who have hundreds of millions of fans worldwide. That is crazy for 6 ordinary girls who started off in a bankrupt company who couldn’t afford a dance trainer and had only a handful of staff. They trained in a basement and SinB who was only 16 had to teach the other 5 members the choreography herself once she had learned it in a few hours. No wonder she is the main dancer. The CEO had to mortgage his house just to pay for their debut and couldn’t afford clothes for them to wear on their debut stages, so he chose a school theme so they could wear cheap school gym outfits without being ridiculed by other rich fandoms. Hence why the debut song Glass Bead opens with a school bell. They made their company rich singlehandedly as they had no other groups for the entire career of GFriend. So rich in fact they became a takeover target for Big Hit who bought 80% of the company in 2019. Once they acquired other companies as well, the CEO of Big Hit created a new company called Hybe to transfer all his bought companies into. Source Music was one of those with GFriend. But the relationship soured when the company announced that GFriend in 2021 was disbanding in just 4 days time. The entire Kpop industry was in total shock at the news. No one expected it at all. GFriend had told fans that they would definitely renew their contracts and wanted to stay together for 15 years at least. Umji was even doing a VLive from her bedroom just 9 hours before the news was leaked to the press. The contracts were terminated 6 months early with no public explanation and GFriend were forbidden from talking about because of NDAs they were forced to sign. Korea voted in a poll back in 2021 for the Kpop group with the best discography in the history of Kpop. GFriend won with a landslide of votes scoring more than double the votes of the world famous boy group who have hundreds of millions of fans worldwide.
That is crazy for 6 ordinary girls who started off in a bankrupt company who couldn’t afford a dance trainer and had only a handful of staff. They trained in a basement and SinB who was only 16 had to teach the other 5 members the choreography herself once she had learned it in a few hours. No wonder she is the main dancer. The CEO had to mortgage his house just to pay for their debut and couldn’t afford clothes for them to wear on their debut stages, so he chose a school theme so they could wear cheap school gym outfits without being ridiculed by other rich fandoms. Hence why the debut song Glass Bead opens with a school bell.
They made their company rich singlehandedly as they had no other groups for the entire career of GFriend. So rich in fact they became a takeover target for Big Hit who bought 80% of the company in 2019. Once they acquired other companies as well, the CEO of Big Hit created a new company called Hybe to transfer all his bought companies into. Source Music was one of those with GFriend. But the relationship soured when the company announced that GFriend in 2021 was disbanding in just 4 days time. The entire Kpop industry was in total shock at the news. No one expected it at all. GFriend had told fans that they would definitely renew their contracts and wanted to stay together for 15 years at least. Umji was even doing a VLive from her bedroom just 9 hours before the news was leaked to the press. The contracts were terminated 6 months early with no public explanation and GFriend were forbidden from talking about because of NDAs they were forced to sign. But Sowon promised fans that they would return one day and now she keeps her promise.
Wow, thank you so much for sharing this! It’s incredible to learn more about GFriend’s journey and how much they overcame to achieve such greatness. I had no idea about the hardships they faced, from training in a basement to debuting with such limited resources-it makes their success even more inspiring. Hearing that Korea voted them as having the best discography in K-pop history honestly doesn’t surprise me now; their music is truly something special.
It’s heartbreaking to read about how things ended with Source Music and the sudden disbandment. It must have been so difficult for Buddies to process. But I love how Sowon’s promise to return keeps the hope alive.

A video of the three of them sat together on the front row of the assembly hall on their graduation day is very cute and no more so than when the other two girls sing Glass Bead to Yerin in the middle of them, just 3 days after she debuted. @zachareyli8185 I haven't heard their names until now it's a big loss they've been in the industry for 14 years and they are vocal queens and they are still popular they promised they won't disband to their fans basically eunji's vocals are amazing and as a solo artist they have 2 videos killing voice i hope you get a reaction and they won 17 awards on music shows with their song luv and no one has broken their record since 2014 so follow apink more because apink has gone through a lot but despite popular groups they didn't disband because they promised us and killing voice released the main song and sang 2 fan songs for us you'll understand when you watch killing voice apink is the only kpop group that releases fan songs on every anniversary they have 13 fan songs so let's say apink is a fan of another group they give us a gift song every year on their anniversary
