As a middle class guy, I've had to rely mostly on cheap staples for a long time. A lot of potatoes, rice, beans, corn, and cabbage, supplemented with a small amount of eggs, and hamburger (or more often ground pork which tends to be cheaper), cheese used sparingly. Most vegetables tend to be out of the budget. Prices on processed food rose the most, so the occasional microwaved pot pie or Totino's pizza or fish sticks are out of the question now. Prices are tolerable if you shop around and cook from scratch.

Pro tip: Don’t eat the snails or frogs, keep your head on a swivel in Paris 😂😂

Matt, enjoy your time in Europe. Great the trial is over and behind you. I have been spending a few months a year in France for a long time. It was always Paris but for the past several years I stay in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, near Nice. 40 min train ride to Italy. A smaller museum in Paris to see is the Marmottan--Monet's museum with the Water Lillies. The Marais is an interesting area for roaming around. À bientôt.

No need to explain your expenditure for your family. We know you’re on top of everything in that respect. I agree that if a person has their financials in-line then an expenditure (without burden) like this is wonderful! Like a few others have said “keep your head on a swivel” while there in France. There are quite a few hot spots flaring up there. Be safe & enjoy!

I’m in Costa Rica and food costs have declined in terms of their local currency but it’s a double edge storm for us, because we are on support and receive all of income in dollars which have sharply declined in the exchange rate.
That is challenging with the exchange rate. I was in Costa Rica last year at this time. Beautiful place.

I grew up eating venison and fish. Even tough I make a descent living, they are my comfort foods so I can take or leave the ground beef. BTW, my wife and I lack about 12 miles of hitting our goal of walking 1000 miles together this year. We are going to have to up our goal.

Re: meat. I am establishing relationships w/local farmers and ranchers. A quarter cow of grass fed/finished works out to $4 per lb here on the Midwest. The quality cannot be beat and the relationship with the rancher increases my chances of sourcing beef when the trucks don't deliver to the stores anymore.

I've been buying my meat from a local farmer which raises two different type of cattle and so far we've had about five dollars a pound which I don't think is a bad price at all especially since it's grass fed and grass finished meat so there's no grains involved.

We bought a half a cow last fall. Glad we did..grass fed and finished…I think it came out to about $5.85 lb.
No steak, all-beef hot dogs, ground beef 1x week, eggs. Can't even buy Black Angus steak where I shop. Stores don't have it because probably too expensive and people not buying it. I bought steak in the grocery only once this year. Went to 2 steak houses. One not so good, one okay. Too expensive to eat out at steak houses. I don't know why they are charging me $50/month for sewer, that doesn't include trash or water. Lucky you and your family in Paris! Can't wait to see more of your trip. Enjoy.

Food prices would be much higher in US if we shut down the coal fired power plants. What do coal plants have to do with it? Ever notice that the Midwest and in general eastern US have been setting a stunningly SMALL number of summer record highs? Columbus OH: 31 days of 100F or greater from 1931-1955. Number of 100F days from 1956- 1980? ZERO. Coal plants started going into service in early 1950’s. Really we’ve accidentally engineered a nearly ideal crop growing environment in the eastern US. The longer growing season and warmth caused by human induced global warming does in fact help grow more corn. At the same time, the aerosol masking effect courtesy of Big Coal suppresses summer afternoon temps so we avoid the extreme heat that can be so damaging. Ask Romania how their crops are doing in 2024 without the aerosol masking effect that the Midwest has.
I just can’t buy meat from the grocery store for the most part We went to Ireland and Scotland last fall. We had money saved for it because of trip to Alaska was cancelled in 2020 😅
