Back in the day, F1 raced at countries that banned tobacco advertising and the cars used to have a different livery without any written tobacco names. So the McLaren print on the back wing is quite accurate. Also the colours in the engine bay also represent the colours of the helmet of Senna.
partially true. that ban really only took affect in the early 2000's. the actual mp4/4 had all of the marlboro logos but now when mclaren, williams, and ferrari run the old cars, they don't have marlboro and rothmans on the car. they replace the logos with either blank space or the company logo. i know in 2005-2009 or something ferrari had the infamous barcode logo instead of clearly saying "marlboro"
Man just finished this . The white on red print isn’t as visible in this video but man it looks terrible in person . How this got past quality control is beyond me . Anyone found a good fix as it throws the whole build off ?
The mirrors are really oriented weirdly. At least you can rotate it to look right. The nose shape resembles more towards later Mclarens. But those rear tires really are offputting. Maybe moving those a bit inwards and just put another set against them to widen them up might help.
As a lot of people in the comments have pointed out, the rear tires are a bit too small. Yes, they are further in width than the front, but the tires themselves should be bigger.
Excellent review and the first I've seen, so well done on finding it early. Mine's on pre-order from Lego. I'm a massive fan of motor sport and especially F1 from back in the day. I'm delighted they've made this tribute to one of F1's most famous cars and certainly one of its best ever drivers. A shame about the slightly off-white/pinky printed pieces but it is what it is, still a great set. Incidentally, it's not just Lego who wouldn't have used tobacco sponsorship on the car, many scale models of F1 cars of that period and earlier don't have them either. In fact, even the shape of that white nose print is intentionally wrong. The white printing slopes the wrong way to avoid resembling the original and iconic Marlboro livery.
Thank you for your kind words! I’m stoked I was the first on UA-cam. I should’ve talked to you first, you know WAY more about this than me. I’m an F1 casual fan, want to get more into it.
@@BrickologyProductions I'm 69 and I've been into motor sport since I was a kid, so I've seen a lot of racing cars! The real car has the white part coming to a point in front of the cockpit.

@@BrickologyProductions Well... for starters... - People in brazil pay 10x the original price on all sets (5 BRL is 1 USD, the rest are taxes and greed). - A good part of the sets are not even released in the brazillian market, the ones that do are in low quantity and get hard to find merely a month after release. - Despite having Lego products in the market for several decades, Lego themselves are not in brazil, instead they hire another company represent them there, thus, the customer support that often gets praised in other parts of the world is just non existent. I'm pretty sure similar things happen in the entirety of the south american market, but brazil is surely a special case.
@@BrickologyProductions ye. I guess since those were thousands of pieces and this is less than 700 is probably why this is a lot cheaper. im just super happy that this set is only 80 bucks.
@@jawn3063 Same, it's great to have one of these actually be affordable. The scale might be the same too because F1 cars are obviously a lot less beefy than real cars
Compared to the real life, legendary car, there are some strange mistakes. The livery design on the front that should look like an arrow/Marlboro logo is botched and looks terrible and most importantly, they got the color wrong. These McLarens may have looked red on TV, but the actual color is more of a hot orange. The only real red was the driver's overalls. The MP4/4 is probably the most famous, most modelled F1 car in history and frankly, this Lego set looks like its been designed by someone who doesn't know much about it.
I think some of these issues are just limitations of the LEGO system at this scale, which don't both me really. For the pieces they have, I like it quite a bit. I see what you mean about the color, however I believe the closest color LEGO has in their catalogue is red. It would look way worse in orange, and I don't expect them to make a new color just for one set.
@@BrickologyProductions Thanks for the info. I admit I don't know much about the guidelines for creating a Lego set, I certainly didn't know they have a specific color palette to chose from.
@@MadThanos79 Yeah for sure. Sets have to be stable for consumers, so some specific shaping is limited. And yeah LEGO has a set amount of colors. There is red, dark red, orange, darker orange, etc. You could debate that the real MP4/4 is a VERY dark orange, but there isn't a LEGO color that matches. I think red was the correct choice, albeit not perfect.
@@ErikBricks I'm sorry but you are mistaken. LEGO has brand standards and sticks to them. Star Wars "weapons" are not real, and those planes did not have logos from the Nazi party. LEGO isn't going to promote a cigarette company that sells cancer. If you can't see why that's wrong, I don't know what to tell you.
I honestly think they absolutely butchered this set... That nose is just hideous and so cheaply done, and the fact that they don't provide it with wider rear tyres is just annoying considering all the new parts they've been releasing recently. They've gone to all that trouble of releasing the new mould for the rim and the tyre in this set and the Mercedes W14, so why not have a different pair of tyres for the rear, too?
Harsh words. I disagree really, and the wheels are actually all 1 piece. The back ones could've been a bit bigger, but I don't think it ruins the model.
