- In the iconic scene from "Trading Places," directed by John Landis, we witness the unraveling of a high-stakes social experiment gone awry. The film's central characters, Louis Winthorpe III (played by Dan Aykroyd) and Billy Ray Valentine (played by Eddie Murphy), confront the reality of their manipulated lives. Winthorpe, awakening from a nightmarish reality where he loses everything, shares his disbelief and horror with his butler, Coleman. He recounts how a "terrible, awful" turn of events led him to poverty and disdain, blaming it on a sinister bet made by the affluent Duke brothers.
Valentine, equally aggrieved, realizes the depth of their manipulation, exclaiming the betrayal they've suffered for a mere dollar. The duo then uncover the Dukes' plan to monopolize the frozen orange juice market using insider information, setting the stage for their intricate revenge.
In a blend of humor and critique, the scene pivots on the concept of wealth's fragility and the superficial boundaries separating society's classes. Landis masterfully intertwines the themes of greed, power, and retribution, leading Winthorpe and Valentine to scheme against their oppressors. Their plan? To invert the financial game, turning the rich into the poor.
Amidst this backdrop, a subplot involving security head Clarence Beeks adds another layer of intrigue, revealing the lengths to which the Dukes will go to secure their fortune. As Winthorpe and Valentine rally to outsmart the Dukes, the film reaches its crescendo, setting up a showdown that delves into the heart of Wall Street's speculative frenzy.
"Trading Places" remains a seminal work for its incisive commentary on social stratification, the capricious nature of fortune, and the enduring human spirit's quest for justice. Through its memorable characters and engaging narrative, it exposes the thin line between the haves and the have-nots, all while delivering a timeless lesson wrapped in satire.
I watch this gem of a movie every New Year. It has so many wonderful lines to quote.
"A whole five dollars? Maybe I'll go to the movies. By myself."
Called by a bank claiming I have money they need to distribute. How much? $4.00. I'm laughing, using that quote. Then the bank employee starts laughing!
Half of it is from me.
I quote isreal's line all the time
@@oldzy Yeah, the "half of it is from me" just puts it over the top! It was already a funny, dry commentary and Don Ameche makes it a classic joke!
"Beef jerky time"
Clarence Beeks telling that woman to fuck off while he’s on the pay phone never fails to crack me up.
Beeks was Shooter McGavin's stepdad.
@@daveconleyportfolio5192 and somehow related to Richard Vernon 😂
Now it's the other way around nowadays
I'm calling it right now: Trading Places is a Christmas movie.
Every year! Also a New Year's movie: do the loco motion 🚂🍹🍸🍷🎉🎈🎆
Yeah, I don't think christmas so much as a holiday movie. From Thanksgiving to New Year! Still, I watch it every year, usually on the 26th of December.
One of the GREATS 👍
Called in the 80’s mate. 😂
Nope can't call it a Christmas movie. It came out June 8,1983. For it to be a Christmas movie it has to come out on Christmas. Deal with it.
I still crack up when Beeks tells off the lady waiting to use the pay phone!😀
I wonder if in the very near future phone booths will only be seen in movies like trading places, terminator and falling down.
"It was the Dukes! It was the Dukes!"
will never get old
That and "Is there a problem officers?"
More than 40 years old and this movie doesn't age still watch this around new years
Fantastic
It does age. No white actor would ‘black up ‘ now.
@fayesouthall6604 Justin Trudue he's an actor, he'll do blackface again
For sure. So many great lines that you truly laugh out loud and you repeat the lines for days on end.
Love the way Coleman says "Egg Nog?" Like "Let's Roll!"
This is a movie that refuses to get old. It just stands the test of time as one of the great comedies, ever. Every performance- every one- solid gold. What an ensemble! The writing- Brilliant. Hilarious. Maybe because finance, greed, and retribution are “evergreen”, it continues to be timely? Trading Places has earned itself a place as one of the most satisfying and entertaining movies in all of movies. Thanks for posting this, Josh! I gotta re-watch. Something to look forward to….
You have to give John Landis credit. The man made a lot of great comedies.
@@PrimarchXAgree 100%
The actors seemed like old adults to me when I seen this at the theater. Now they look like young adults to me.
It shows money as status. The characters in it that never learn are Winthorp's "friends" that sing about Constance Frye's open holes.
One of my all time favorites!!! Great Christmas movie!!!
I’ve said “Beef Jerky time” everytime I’ve had beef jerky for years. I forgot where I got it from.
I say it out loud every time I see beef jerky. Every once in a while, someone at the gas station will get the reference. I do remember where I got the quote! 😊
Same 😂😂
I always sing like him before eating beef jerky😂
Muy bien y
Never heard it.
No planning of revenge is compete without a butler bringing egg nog.
Served cold, like revenge.
And shotguns.
Truer words have NEVER been said.
And no butler is complete without a British accent.
Ah! The 80s man! What a wonderful time to be alive that was...
Yes, fuck 2024 😧
Art yes. Crime no. Salary and housing yes.
Great film. I miss the 80’s.
Amen.
80's 🎥 films were 🏆 🥇 Prized Golden 💎 Gems, I enjoy the Nostalgic Value they offer shoots ya back in time.
“ A Dollar “ I loss my sh*t every time..
I lose my 💩
And now they have the $1.25 store
Don't know why but that eggnog scene made me think of Batman and Robin with Alfred and aunt Harriet.😂😂😂
I literally thought I was looking at a Batman remake when I saw the butler.
❤😮wow "Operation Strange Fruit" , Billie Holiday reference
Shout out for the Dukes appearance in Coming to America
Yes both directed by John Landis. Awesome how he worked that in. If you did see trading places you wouldn't make the connection.
“We’re back!”
Love this move. Does a great job showing the true difference between the ultra wealthy and someone who is well off.
My favorite part of this movie is NOT even in this movie -- It's when Price Akeem (formerly Billy Ray Valentine) gives all his money to the now homeless Randolph and Mortimer Duke in the movie "Coming to America"
Such a classic film. It’s always watchable no matter how many times you watch it.
Alastair Sim's Christmas Carol, of course the Grinch and THIS are the best "check your head" Christmas movies.
Loved the show. Escaped denizens of SNL. Who knew that agricultural products can have such an impact?
Best movie about finance EVER.
For the people who get confused about the ending. Just remember the core philosophy of capitalism. Buy low, sell high. It all makes sense if you remember that little nugget.
@@PrimarchX It's more like bet low, sell high...and it's beating the insiders
"F*ck off!" - I still quote that line to this day
I so love this movie 🍿, watching this movie 🎥 gives me the feeling of nostalgia. The Bronx, New York
My all time favorite Christmas movie 💚
This movie, The Ref and Scrooged are a perfect Trifecta even during Hanukkah!! ROFLMAO 😂😅
Ralph bellamy was such a great villain in the movie.
This is the first time I’ve seen Marcus Brody outside of Indiana Jones
Mr. Coleman is clearly happy here for a chance to get back at his employers the Duke brothers for them making him betray the man he was butler to - Louis Winthorpe III.
I love how Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd stand up and say “Clarence Beeks?” at the exact same time.
We rewatched the other night! It was the Dukes!
"MERRY NEW YEAR!!!"
I say this every year since I first saw this movie! 😂
2:44 Me in the early 80s trying to eavesdrop on my sisters' phone calls.
I love the Reagan and Nixon portraits.
@jimmiller5600 I still laff at that . I thought I was the only person in 1983 that noticed that. In the 🎥 movie 🍿 theater, when those 2 were shown. I'd just BURST💥💣out laffing when that scene passed by & nobody else understood why. Other movie goes going Shhhhh....10 frames later while I continued laffing.
@@RICHBLACKCOCK Forty years later we have $34T in debt and an accused felon for president. JFC.
3:27...Fun fact, the TV version had a bonus scene showing exactly how Beeks obtained the crop report; don't know why it never made the theatrical cut
yeah, but it cut out a Jamie Leigh and a couple of big beautiful melons .
He got it off of Hunter Biden’s laptop…😳
How did he do it
Fun Fact, that's Jim Belushi jumping from the train shouting happy new year, wearing the gorilla suit that comes in handy later. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message.
Duh
Fun fact: Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy star in this film. It also has Jamie Lee Curtis in it too.
John Belushi's brother.
@@SSgtRobertMorris Yes, these are the days where he was cast as a vague, Belushi-light homage to his better brother.
One of my favorite movies ever
Billy Ray Valentine..
Capricorn.
Yeah
😂
Desert Island movie choice. Love so much!!
"Or beats them to it."
Nice that Denholm Elliott got the best line in the movie.
That "Eggnogg" is SOOOOOO Alfred Pennyworth. And i LOVE it!
Back when movies rely on a good script, and cast to be successful. Not special effects or stupid unbelievable stunts like in the Fast and Furious!
Best Holiday movie ever!
How come no one gets mad at Coleman for going along with it??
Because if he hadn't he would have been fired and the Dukes would have done it anyway.
@@noahhobson4521 Then stand and be fired.
Because the Dukes told him that it was just a scientific experiment. I guess Coleman thought that it would be for a short time, more like a prank than a real life changing bet.
He was technically under the Duke's employ so he had to follow their orders. He was in truth, disgusted by having to do this.
@@BillyButcher90 That's what I'm saying. He should have stood and quit. And I think it was a little weird that he was employed by the Dukes and not by Louis. Did Louis also have to buy his groceries from a company store?
It's so great when the Christmas day newscast leads off with a story on the orange juice crop reports, and takes time to mention the guy who's carrying the report, and what his name is, and the company he works for
I think I mumbled, "Yeah, right!" the first time I saw that. Comedies allow writers a lot of leeway.
This was such a good movie!
This movie, just doesn’t get any funnier. It’s a masterpiece
This movie never gets old
May I suggest using your night stick officer?
Mr. Vernon from The Breakfast Club looking like Inspector Gadget. 🤔
Lmfaoooo Yo This Movie Is LEGENDARY 😂😂😂
"Looking Good...Feeling Good" . Ending da BEST !!!😅
The only movie I have seen with a future U.S. Senator in it.
running man and predator, with 2 future usa state governors.
Paul Gleason did such a good job of playing bad guys. He’s great in this.
Sort of like our Congress how they do insider trading they talk about making you all invest in it and then the law gets passed and written
Absolute CLASSIC 💯, this film is timeless 😅
WHOS BEEN PUTTING OUT THEIR KOOLS ON MY FLOOR?!?!?
5:10 Remson sure has come a long way from being locked in that car trunk.
Best Christmas movie ever. (Die Hard isn’t even close to this one.)
And a Top 20 all-time comedy classic.
Such a awesome movie 🤙🤙🤙
That's Jim Belushi in the gorilla suit in his seventh acting credit on IMDB.
Love this movie. Still no idea on how the revenge worked.
A simplified version:
Bad guys (Duke brothers) pay a government official for secret information on the Florida orange crop. The report says the cold weather did NOT hurt the orange crop, therefore the price of oranges will be low and thus the price of orange futures will be low.
Good guys (Louis and Billy) intercept the report and swap it out with a fake report saying the crop has been badly damaged, therefore the price of oranges and orange futures will be high.
The bad guys get the false report. They buy up all orange futures contracts at a medium to high price, believing that the price will go even higher when the report is released. They make many promises to pay people because they are spending more money than they actually have.
The real report is released, causing the price of oranges futures to drop. The bad guys are stuck with contracts to pay high prices for very low price orange futures. They have to sell everything they own to pay their debts and lose their prominent positions as stock traders with all the privilege and power.
Finally, the good guys helped shuffle the contracts back and forth, getting a small percentage of each deal, and have become very rich for a few hours work.
I love this movie so much.
0:04 Love that movie
this is my favorite scene of the whole movie how calm eddie murphy is while dan aykroyd is cleaning a shotgun to shoot people
Makes me want to watch this again.
Me too, got the DVD somewhere.👍
Wasn't the guy who played Beeks also the principle in The Breakfast Club?
That is correct.
Merry New Year 😂
3:00
Speaking like a true gentleman... I dont know why I found this so funny . Is that Debra Barone there before she married Raymond and moved to Long Island ?
4:38 Rush, Driven
It's one of the greatest comedies ever
Because Coleman was the butler doing what he was told and helped get revenge and redemption
I never caught that it was "operation strange fruit". Pretty dark if you know where that comes from.
I just looked that up. Yeah, very dark. I think the reference in a comedy movie was inappropriate.
"Black bodies swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees."
jaime lee rockin' that pair
One thing is for sure, Dan Aykroyd did not use the "Tarantino" technic to strangle Eddie Murphy
That's a crazy scene from Inglorious Bastards.
Great movie
Cut the best part when he meets Dan Aykroyd on the train
Look how young they all look.
Senator Al Franken. Awesome.
4:46 Vernon antagonizing the gorilla. A certain high school student a few years later would antagonize Vernon during Saturday school detention
One of the best movie ever lol
Please to help me with my rucksack?😂😂😂
"..for how much?"......"A Dolla...." lol
worst thing about this movie was, after it was shown, and the usa government changed the finance rules, they called it the eddie murphy rule, instead of the dan ayckroyd rule. remember, it was winthorpe who came up with the plan on how to exploit the existing laws.

Abula, abula, abula ha! 🤣
Did you notice that your quote caused a "Translate to English" option to appear?
It is, "Don't be, don't be, don't be them!"
LOL
I wonder if that was accidental.
@Astrobrant2 What it be like? Do you feel me? 😉🤣
@@Stephen-fe8bq Huh? I have no idea what you are asking. And this time Google didn't give me a "Translate to English" option.
@Astrobrant2 I couldn't find the translate to English, but that's not the point! It was just funny and if you want to make a big thing about it, then that's your problem not mine! Take it easy! 😊
1:28 But it's the American Way!

Another Fun Fact, it's senator to be, Al Franken as the baggage handler. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message.
... and his comedy partner Tom Davis.
Another Fun fact...the black guy in the suit is Eddie Murphy, he was a star in the 80s.
@@philpalmer4877 Oh, all this time, I had thought it was Chris Rock. Thanks, man!

Jamie Lee Curtis is such a hottie in this movie
her chests unreal
@@whitetroutchannel Absolute perfection.
Yes, she looked great in jeans. Fap fap fap. Today, 41 years later, she's a grey-haired woman with no biological kids. Sad. All she has is an Oscar statuette. An inanimate object. That's all she has to show for 46 years in the industry. She never went through labour pains, never nursed a baby, never enjoyed genuine motherhood. Maybe seeing her own odious father cheat on her own mother put her off from making babies. Or maybe she was just infertile. Her existence will always be defined by a mere statuette. What a life.
Oh, Dear...
Beef jerky time!
Just realized the butler guy's last name was Coleman 😅
I don't see many famous people or actors with my last name its rare.
Never understood why they were acting like they had to be a priest, a Swede, exchange student etc. or their cover would be blown. EVERYONE was in costume on the train. Still, awesome movie.
I think the fact there was a costume party going on lent more credence to the possibility of this exact combination of people. you cant tell if they are being serious or just goofing in costume. so you just dont question it.
I love that gorrilla 😅
lest we forget, including a former SNL member turned U.S. Senator who would resign January 2, 2018 over allegations of sexual misconduct, Al Franken.
If Al had been a RepubliCon, he would have doubled-down and never resigned.
@@davidmurray5399 because don't you know, that RepubliCunts are "chosen by God and Jesus and Moses" to lead the USA into the Light of Christiandom and Donald Trump is the "Lord and Saviour" of the USA? It is why they are implementing Christian Shariah everywhere like banning abortions and restricting birth control while allowing militias to own assault rifles, just like Islamic Shariah, where they also banned abortions, restricting birth controls and allowing warlords to own assault rifles.
