it's interesting to think that the first main few voices of rwby were just people Monty picked from around the RoosterTeeth office and now we got professional mainstream voice actors in the show, just goes to show how far we've come
I find it more interesting how Monty just knew who would work for each character despite each ones limited backgrounds. Lindsay, Arryn, and Miles were theatre kids & had acting but Kara and Barbara were not actors. Neither was Jessica Nigri. Even Shannon McCormick, Kathleen Zuelch, Jen Brown, Samantha Ireland, and Jen Taylor had acted at least in RvB for several years by the time of RWBY’s debut and they were regular working actors outside of Rooster Teeth to boot. But Monty somehow had the sixth sense and knew Lindsay, Arryn, Barbara, and Kara were perfect for the roles and could bring them to life properly. And now eight years later I can’t see any other women as Team RWBY and they’ve all grown as performers.

Believe me I was just as shock as you are when I learned that Ghira and Shay D. Mann had voices in MHA and not only that but Tyrian VA the fucking pervert in High School DxD and Clover voices Aizawa so I was really thrown for a loop

Actually no. Lindsay Jones, Barbara Dunkelman, Arryn Zech, Michael Jones, Miles Luna, and Elizabeth Maxwell have all worked on western animation. Thats cause they’ve all worked on Camp Camp and Red vs. Blue and RWBY. These were all US productions and by definition western animation. Actually, technically everyone on this list by default for having worked on RWBY should count. But if you were’t counting RWBY (since its an anime) then itd be that smaller group.

Ahh, you need to see and hear the GunslingerGirl dub...Caitlin Glass makes that show, as Triela, who is an absolute badass, but still a believable young, strong lead female character.
This really shows how good the director for RWBYs VAs are, some of these are night and day with quality.
That's because the RWBY performances are written and recorded prior to animation. Any Anime dub must be written to adapt the pre existing dialog AND match the mouth movements of the animation. Comparing the two is silly.

Lindsay and Michael Jones are two underrated performers imo. Just listen to the range they each have as their characters and they don’t sound alike or have similar registers. Michael as Sun sounds like a teen to twenty something while Michael as Max sounds like an actual kid. Or Lindsay as Ruby being such a distinct voice sounding nothing like Space Kid or Kimball.
The fact rwby character has range in character personality is amazing

God damn, I will never love just how fucking good Miles was as Felix. Such an incredible villain.
Miles gets so much crap from people yet they don’t realize he’s a damn good writer and a damn good actor with the background to back it up. Even go back in the day when he would come on the RT podcast and just listen to how he tells stories from his life. He’s an excellent storyteller and performer.

Well, just an interesting note, he left RT a couple months ago. No reason to panic; I haven't seen this officially confirmed anywhere, but I'm sure he'll return to voice Jaune. The show is his baby, and Jaune in particular he would probably do for free, just with how much he loves that character. Also, he and Kerry have already finished writing Volume 9.
Anyways, I think he really has got some talent. The latter half of RWBY hasn't been agreeing with me so much, but RWBY Volume 3 and especially Red vs. Blue Seasons 11-13 are just such incredibly strong work. In a world where it's becoming increasingly common to say, "Everything except the writing was pretty good" these projects are such a breath of fresh air.

Josh Grelle actually has a reputation for voiceing a lot of Harem Anime protagonists, his nickname in the Dubbing community is Josh ' Harem King' Grelle
Cherami Leigh is a damn good actress and fucking killed it as Ilia. She’ll always be Lucy Heartfilia for me but her range goes way beyond that. Also: she was so dope in Cyberpunk 2077.
She's also Gaige in the Borderlands games

Fun Fact: Elizabeth Maxwell, Winter Schnee, also plays Sae Niijima from P5, who is the older sister to Makoto Niijima/Queen who is also played by Cherami Leigh.
Fun fact: the Japanese voice actress for Winter also does the voice of Saber in the Fate franchise.

The only reason that practically all of the RWBY cast are cast of a majority of the rest of RoosterTeeths shows is because its better to have actors that individually voice *multiple* characters, rather than have like 30 voice actors each playing the role of only one character.
Edit: I say only but theres more too it than that, this is just one aspect of it
I mean its true to an extent but its more so that on any production if you had a good working relationship with an employee or liked what someone working for you did you are likely to hire them again. With Red vs Blue, Rooster Teeth worked with a lot of actors for years and even up to 10-15 years. So being familiar with quite a few led to some getting asked to audition for new Rooster Teeth projects. Some are RT employees and yeah it is convenient to have them as actors but its also what I said. Writers being familiar with fellow RT employees means they could have them in mind for particular roles which is why they hire them. But others like Sam Ireland, Shannon McCormick, and Jen Brown were all local actors in the local TV/acting industry which is why RT would hire the again (and again if they had a previously good working relationship then all the more).
For an example, Elizabeth Maxwell was already an anime voice actress established with FUNimation which is in Dallas. Then she was hired on to voice Winter in Volume 3, being the first major actor who’d been in major anime productions. Elizabeth was only on V3 yet its likely the working relationship was good enough that RT kept her in mind for other projects. The year after V3 Elizabeth starred as Nikki on Camp Camp and also guest appeared on RvB. She’s sofar kept up appearing on Rooster Teeth content here and there. Rooster Teeth recognizes her talents as a performer and likely sees the good in her which is why Elizabeth is in their minds when creating new projects.
It also helps that pretty much all the stars in the Funimation galaxy were willing to work with and on Rooster Teeth productions!
They also seem to be more talented than most anime VAs, especially the ones who can’t seem to be bother to at least change their voices for different roles.

Christopher Wehkamp (Clover) - Miles Edgeworth in the Ace Attorney series
Cherami Leigh also played Gaige in Borderlands 2, but only when insane because of a mixup during production.
She and Elizabeth Maxwell also play the Niijima sisters in Persona 5, Makoto and Sae respectively

Bit of a clarification for Christopher Wehkamp (Clover), he didn't start voicing Eraserhead until the 2nd season of MHA, (the role had to be recast as the original actor retired from voice acting to pursue his stage career). It's a minor point, but the Eraserhead clip was from season 1, so that isn't actually Wehkamp's voice in that scene. Otherwise, this is a really cool video! I enjoy seeing comparisons like these!
Elizabeth Maxwell also voiced Sae Nijima from Persona 5. And Cherami Leigh also voiced Makoto from Persona 5.
Ironic enough, Elizabeth Maxwell also plays Urbosa and Riju in BOTW and Age of Calamity. Which Urbosa is basically an aunt towards Zelda given that Urbosa and Zelda’s mother were best friends before.

So many of these voice actors are in Attack on Titan
Whitley’s voice actor technically was, he was in the abridged version at least. He also plays Langa in that gay ass skateboarding anime. He also plays on Yuri on Ice.
And so many of the other characters in this show play in other animes as well. This is awesome.
And Jason Liebrecht was also Lo Wang in the first 2 of the current Shadow Warrior trilogy. When Elizabeth Maxwell said she tended to play characters who liked to dominate, she wasn't kidding. Winter totally dominates.

The only voices I recognised right off the bat in the show was Jen Taylor as Salem (who also voiced Cortana in Halo) and Mela Lee as Caroline Cordovin (who also voiced Kikimora in the Owl House).
I still feel that Mercury's line 'you don't know me' is a reference to his role as one of the party members in Persona 4 (both the video game and the anime that came from it). I'll never unhear him shouting at himself lol

I went in watching this and saw the butler. Then Erwin Smith started giving a speech and I listened to that over and over for about 5 minutes. I kinda wish he got a bigger role that va is incredible.

The fact the same VA plays Bakugo and Cabba, two of the most polar opposite type characters you can think of, shows quite the range.
I never knew how much crossover there was with MHA, though of all of them, I don't think I can ever look at Winter the same in this series knowing that she's voiced by the same person as Midnight.
