This Round Is INCREDIBLE (6.5 Grendel)

  • 6.5 Grendel is a great round for the AR-15 platform. It's the same length as the 5.56 NATO or .223 but is thicker for more power. 6.5 Grendel is a great for deer hunting or medium sized game especially in the AR-15.

      @@jjjr.1186 Not sure where you got that data, but I don't personally believe it. The 118gr MKZ was designed to duplicate the ballistic performance of Hornady's 123gr SST. From a 24" barrel, I get an even 2600 fps out of the factory 123gr SST load, and I've only been able to get my handloads up to around 2550 fps. There's no way you're safely pushing the .264 118gr MKZ over 2800 fps from an 18" barrel chambered for 6.5 Grendel. You should be able to get there with a 6.5 Creedmoor, but that's a different cartridge all together.

      @@nospam3409 from (Cavity Backs) own website. Obviously u didn't even look so I doubt u couldnt find the info. But it was a typo. The velocity is 2550fps from an 18in barrel or 2750if using their 105grn bullets. Cavity back also makes 6.8 spc2 in 105grn it can't be loaded in spc1. It's 105 going 2750from a 16in barrel. So same speed essentially as the 6.5grendel. But much lower bc.

      @@nospam3409 i think 6.8 spc was a failed idea that the military wasn't really interested in. That's why they limited it's bc. And range. It really doesn't have any advantage over existing 556 77grn loadings at 500yds. They litterally limited it to 7.62x39 range and performance.

    • @nospam3409
      @nospam3409 3 місяці тому

      @jjjr.1186 Personally, I'd say it was ahead of its time. AR bolts were struggling when the Grendel came out, and the 6.8 spc predates the Grendel by a few years. With the changes to the metallurgy and HT process, the larger bolt faces can handle more pressure and abuse than they originally could. The military basically gave up on it because they aren't equipped to make new things work better. Today's 6.8 spc II is a more capable cartridge than the original. That doesn't mean that it's better in the wind than my service rifle pushing a 75gr VLD over 2900 fps with a stout charger of N540, but the 6.8 will have more energy on target when it gets there. For a military application, that's significant.

      @@metallicsilver I like 762, have lots of friends who prefer their 762 ARs as their go-to, but what worries me about them is how compromised the thin outer wall of the bolt is to fit it inside the envelope of an AR bolt face. In military armories, you see the broken lug cracks stop right at that area (very high round counts.) So my worry is that when you stack the wall thinness compromise on top of the compromises made in civilian manufacture (hit and miss brands like bear creek) that make a lot of these 7.62 bolts, the failure might be catastrophic and not still hold the bolt closed and locked. Hope I was able to word it clearly enough, writing is far further down in my skill set than machining and turning barrel wrenches. (Edit: 762,39.. I'm not referring to blackout, that uses the same bolt face and doesn't take thickness away from between the barrel and chamber.)

The only reason anyone even tried to develop the Creedmoor is because Remington di what only Remington can do. They took one of the fest cartridges of the past 50 years and proceeded to screw it up faster than a female advertising exec in a bud light commercial.

      @@nospam3409 @nospam3409 You sound like a Fudd. You're saying .308 or .30TC is better than 6.5CM? That must be why it's been so heavily adopted due to its superior ballistic profile...? 6.5XM is pretty closely comparable to the 6.5x47 Lapua, except the Lapua is a hair better for some things and it costs significantly more and is significantly less available. There are trade offs. Certain calibers are better at certain things. As for the 6.5CM, it's better than .308 for most things when we're talking long range shooting, so I dont know what you're even talking about. Your point is that there is a better caliber? There's always a better caliber. But the two you mentioned are hard to find and very costly. And thus - we have the 6.5CM. Don't get me wrong, I'm not currently a cm shooter. I'm running a 300winmag, but I see the virtues of the cm. Kinda seems like you're afraid of things changing.

    • @nospam3409
      @nospam3409 Рік тому +2

      @BureauATF I'm not afraid of change at all. I think the PRC cartridges are going to be game changers going forward. There's nothing wrong with the 6.5 CM, but the 260 Remington is better in every measurable way. The only objective of the 6.5 CM design was to be able to run 140s at mag length, which it does. The hope was that this would make for a better cartridge at distance, which it is not. It gave up so much velocity that the higher BC projectiles can never catch up to a 260 Rem running a good 130gr pill. They weren't even smart enough to use a SRP to begin with. My biggest beef with the 6.5 CM is that under just the right circumstances, it's equal to the 260 Rem, but on most categories and in most circumstances the 260 Rem out performs it. The really sad thing is that the old 260 AI just walks all over it and that basic wild cat has been around for over 5 decades. I have nothing against new, but I've played this game long enough to know that new isn't always better. Often times it's just an excuse for someone in the advertising department to take more of your money, and you are certainly welcome to give them more of yours.

    • @BureauATF
      @BureauATF Рік тому +2

      @@nospam3409 @nospam3409 I agree 100% with you on finding new ways to take your dollar. But I think the main thinking behind the 6.5cm was to replace the .308, which it has done quite nicely. Regardless, you can find 6.5 cheaper than 260. Launching the same pill, the 6.5cm is better at extreme ranges. Thats a fact. You act like 260 just eats the 6.5 for breakfast, and thats just not the case. Between the two its pretty much 6 of one. The 6.5 stands right next to the 260. If you're talking a custom made 260 bilt gun, well, yeah - go 260. If were talking factory loads in factory guns, 6.5 takes the cake at long range.

      @@boygonewhoopdataZZ That power is essential when hunting not to mention it has more wind drift than 130 gr 6.5mm bullets so yeah, I'd stick with the 6.5, especially since light bullets are going out of style. If you look at 5.56, it has done it's job well, but there are some issues with ricochet when hitting barriers and loss of power at longer ranges. Modern warfare often means involves taking shots at longer ranges and if the bullet you use loses a lot of energy at longer ranges like lighter bullets do, it puts your army at a disadvantage. 6.5 grendel is the best of all the worlds, heavy, powerful going very fast and flat and accurate/resistant to wind. You defeat the entire purpose of what 6.5 grendel is designed for when you heavily sacrficed one area to be slighter better in another, especially since in real military application, the bullet actually hitting with enough force to kill or incapacitate is much more important is better than the bullet being slightly more accurate, but practically much less effective and carrying significantly less energy than other options at those ranges. You can easily compensate for the low drop and wind drift of the 6.5 grendel already, but you can't compensate for lack of energy retention at longer ranges and then when you factor in 130 gr 6.5mm bullet that have less wind drift than the best performing 6mm bullets, it a no brainer. That shifts the 6mm to being slightly flatter, but more affected by wind at range which leaves it being flatter shooting, but less accurate as it will not stray from the trajectory you're aiming it at. At long distances, wind drift matters more.

    6.5 Grendel, ar15 bolt life, what's that?

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 Рік тому +2

      I've been shooting it regularly since 2009, and by regularly, I mean DM courses throughout the year, LR events, load development, zero confirmation, and recreational steel shooting out to 1000yds.
      I have 7 different 6.5 Grendels, from 22" down to 10.5", and boat loads of brass and ammo.
      I'm meticulous about how I approach a build, and I have not broken a bolt. I've broken some optics though, which I have also done on other rifles.

    So he said it doesn't work with the lower. Just change the upper and get proper mags and will semi auto all day long if you have decent equipment to start with. That is the pri.mar purpose of rhe AR platform. One purchase of 800 to 1000 dollars and have a large amount of calibers for 300 to 400 makes for a large variety for smaller amount of money. And if just hunting and not long range target compition use a true zero quick change scope and save even more.

    Its one of those calibers thats gonna be dead in 20 years because its not different enough to keep up in the market. Its a niche, but great hunting caliber, sure, for those hunting with an AR-15 platform to begin with, and not a more powerful AR-10, where customers need to buy one of the most expensive ar-15 platform ammunition (and a new upper) for better long range performance than 300 blackout, a multipurpose, effective caliber one might already stock and use for suppressor or home defense purpose. It does it job but i dont see many people needing it, its customer base is almost entirely hunter who solely only use an AR-15 and many areas prohibit necked cartridges so atleast a 350 legend AR-15 has a niche that can't be filled.

    I thought Alexander arms came up with the Grendel as a replacement cartridge, for the 556 NATO. Not Hunting, but military application. Hits like a 762 NATO on the M 16 platform. It wasn’t adopted. type 1 and type 2 be careful what you buy, bolts and barrels are not interchangeable

    I don't know about incredible. You get a 120gr at 2500fps. It carries decent velocity and energy to about 300yds, but an ar-10 in 6.5 creedmoor or 260 remington, or even the 308, is going to smoke it. It's a cartridge that was developed to fill a spot that shouldn't really exist, because it can't be filled well.

    • @aaronthompson192
      @aaronthompson192 2 місяці тому +1

      It's a trade off. It is comparable to 308 out to 800m or 1k, from what I remember, and it weighs less and has less recoil. A good upgrade over 556 without losing a significant amount of your combat load. Think Afghanistan.

      6.5 Grendel will be what gets me into reloading. I snagged some factory Hornady ammo last year for about $35 a box, then sighted in with Nosler pills during deer season for about 40 locally. But it's hard to justify being the go-to when rounds cost north of $2 a piece and with spotty availability.
      I'm hoping with its 7.62x39 parent case I can start loading my own stockpile much more reasonably.

      I'll keep my Grendel... it can reach out and touch the target with enough killing power at 1k yds to keep me smiling.
      The 6.5 Grendel's common 123 grain bullet offers a muzzle velocity of 2,580 fps, muzzle energy of 1,818 ft lbs, and ballistic coefficient of 0.506. This allows it to keep a supersonic muzzle velocity at 1,000 yards. At that distance, it retains 400 ft lbs of energy.
