If you want to configure your servers using a static IP do that they will boot up while the network is down, can you still make their hostname searchable in DNS by adding a static IP in the unify controller? Using the older USG3 this is not the case. I noticed there was a new DNS entry field below the IP address field on your client config screen in the unify controller. That field doesn't appear on the current firmware available for the USG3. Thanks.
Yes that field can be used to add an A record to the local DNS server. I use it to fake an Internet domain name for some internal usage so that I can save $.99 a year from godaddy:)
@@hz777 interesting. I currently have to add static entries in a seperate VM running Adguard Home and set that as my upstream DNS server for the USG3 WAN link. This is purely so that local clients can resolve the IP of the local servers/VMs. On the USG3 at least, it appears that just adding the client with a static IP to the unify controller doesn't work unless that client also sends out a DHCP request.
@marcelbastiaans8700 My previous answer was about your second half question in your initial comment. If we are purely talking about resolving a FQDN like hostname.domain_name, yes the dhcp client must initiate the dhcp request first, because only during that process, the dhcp server knows the hostname of the client.
@@hz777 Thanks mate. I wish unify would implement a proper DNS server with A, TXT, CNAME, records etc. I seldom need to resolve the hostname of a random windows/linux/phone client that can get its network config via DHCP, but I do need to resolve static configured local servers/services.
@@marcelbastiaans8700 From what I see, Ubiquiti rarely implements their own services if existing services are already widely used in Linux. For example avahi, dnsmasq, etc. And even if a feature is already available in the existing tools, 90% of the time Ubiquiti will only expose a fraction of the existing configurations on the UI. If you want to go to backend to change config, sorry the changes won't survive a reboot...

It would be nice if they can can add a reverse proxy of someway to get ssl certificates
Buy your domain and then you can do it with SSL. Just domain without hosting.
I asked the same question to UniFi GPT, the answer is Ubiquiti does not have such a plan.
