"Remember kids. Consolidation is bad, except when we do it" - IGN
So IGN owns Humble Bundle, which now publishes games through Humble Games, and buying other large news outlets that... review their games. No way this could turn out bad...
We could see a Humble Fumble.
Ziff Davis which owns IGN, owns Humble Bundle. Anyhow yeah it's already been like that for a few years
Definitely a conflict of interest there but I've never really seen IGN review many Humble Bundle games which are mostly indie games.
"What can possibly go wrong?"
@@faceurhell Tumble Dumble
Eurogamer Portugal pointed, as a negative aspect of Paper Mario TTYD, that the game had too many text...
The guy that was in charge of reviewing the game wasnt the best choice imo
IGN owning all these news outlets... what could possibly go wrong with that? Gotta look like one message to unite gaming amirite...
The worst part of this is that IGN now owns a minority stake in Digital Foundry. Well, DF was nice while they lasted.
Just like normal media, all one entity pretending to be either side to cause further division and distraction
Going to own Spawnwave soon haha
They've been pushing the same message for years despite working for different companies. Remember their mailing lists that got outed where they discussed the ways in which they would spin stories so that their preferred narratives would be the only one spoken of.
7/10 - IGN
I knew Paper Mario and The Thousand Year Door was a 10/10 back in 2004. Everyone shit on the Gamecube back then, but the truth is, the Gamecube library is one of the varied and high quality of any console in history.
Nobody bashed on the GameCube, why you making up stuff?
Obligatory "but they are all kiddy games, cartoon link looks so young, I have to have my grim dark grey super edgy and emotionally broody protagonist that is dealing with darkness to be satisfied." God I hated that rhetoric even back then.
@@The80KatYou’re joking right? People made fun of the GC back when it was relevant. Everyone has just forgotten as time has gone on but I sure haven’t. I loved my “lunchbox” and “Celda”.
You making shit up for likes
@LockedOnTargetShow bruh that train of thought was cringe when I was 12, like wtf you mean you don't play games with cartoon graphics! But play sports games 🤢
How dare you remind me that Paper Mario TTYD is 20 years old. Now my back hurts….
1994 was 30 years ago.
@Mac_Omegaly the n64 didn't release until 1997. Do you think a gamecube game come out in 1994? You really thought you had a gotcha moment then didn't you?
Oh Punio
@@Mac_OmegalyYeah, the year Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid released, for the Super NES.
I am 38 now yay
2022: IGN discourages giant corporate monopolizing acquisitions.
2024: The pot calling the kettle black.
Hope you'll tell more about "Bureau of Contacts", is it really a tech breakthrough in the work with enemy's intelligence?
I don't believe they will be able do what they announced.
I was not expecting to hear Paper Mario TTYD compared to a Taylor Swift concert today but here we are lol
TTYD should have gotten at least a 90 imo. Played it as a kid and loved and replayed it a couple years ago to see if it was nostalgia and it was even better than I remember. It is a fantastic game and not your typical kid friendly mario game. would highly recommend
I’ve always said Hellblade was more of an artistic experience thru gaming more so that a traditional video game. Especially with headphones
more of a movie
But is it fun
6 hour movie...
@@mitchjames9350quite a lot if you like the style
@@mitchjames9350 games are not always meant to be fun, the medium has already overcome that barrier, games can be fun, but videogames can also be an experience, an art piece, etc.
To be fair, the first Hellblade didn't have a lot of focus placed on the gameplay either. It was much more of an immersive 'experience' type game with some combat thrown in to keep it interesting while looking and sounding absolutely amazing. I would expect nothing less from the follow up. I have it installed from Game Pass and will dig into it at the first chance I get. Headphones Highly Recommended.
the state of modern gaming is so bad that i almost get no joy from my morning newswave 😢
😢
😢
I hear books are pretty cool
It's only bad because you focus on the negative online discourse.
Whereas I have been playing great game after great game for the first 5 months of the year.
The Internet is flooded with so much reactionary content. It sucks that its getting so many people feeling down
Getting real annoyed at all these companies shutting down studios, AAA gaming is going to crash and its going to crash hard.
AAA gaming has already crashed hence why the studios are getting shut down in the first place I chose wisely by choosing Nintendo over the so-called AAA gaming nonsense.
Good!
I want to return of the A games I want to return of B games!
It is crashing, this is what crashing looks like
And Nintendo will emerge through it unharmed once again.
I believe the crashing has begun already 🤔
Microsoft: "Hellblade 2 is a break out hit in all key measurements... which is why we're happy to announce that we're shutting down Ninja Theory!"
Lol
Actually, their next game is already authorized. Still, comedy gold.
Yet, it's actually not a breakout hit. Haaaa. Some reviewers are just shilling, and, surprisingly, some Xbox centric reviewers have panned the game's gameplay and story, which are both lacking. I'd even consider "Spawn" an Xbox centric guy. Did ya hear his take on this game in this very vis? Lol. Not to mention, there's no logical rhyme nor reason to MS's decision-making with Xbox, hence why they are in this very situation, so NT may or may not be safe in the future.
@TreyIM22 spawn is an 'xbox centric guy"?
Hardly.
@@shreder75yeah Spawn is definitely Nintendo centric.
Phil Spencer been real quiet since the game dropped.
Never a good sign when a news publication buys a bunch of the other smaller publications.
IGN might have just pissed me off. Not sure yet.
Will you do something about it?
*_Can you?_*
I have been pissed off at every Game Journalist Site heck they hate Players and I hate them.
@@MasterZebulin - Still not sure if I’m pissed off…it’ll take time to know for certain. Not sure what I would or could do if it comes about tho.
@@FTChomp9980 - That’s a well balanced relationship.
Hey, weird question that I’m sure no one will even see. But does anyone know where I can get that sick Dreamcast shirt?
Oh great.. more of IGN-orance to go around
Interactive movies are still video games, its just that A) the marketing and price need reflect that and B) the story and visuals need to make up for the lack of gameplay.
And personally, I dont think the lack of a core challenge is an excuse to not use interactivity to tell your story. If a game has beautiful vistas that benefits from camera control and natural exploration then it needs to be damn good at leading the players eye naturally, and if it is then the experience has BENEFITED being interactive even if all you were doing was moving the camera. And Hellblade 1 had moments like that, where the characters senses go foggy and starts seeing symbols and your struggle to make sense of the noise and do its meager brutal combat sold the insanity. Im not saying if it succeeded or not, merely stating that was "The Point" as it were of the first and I assume the second... But uh honestly, for 50 dollars is still steep for that regardless of execution.
How can the price be reflected when such games are the most expensive ones to make..? The economics don't make sense.
It really depends on how you define game. I wouldnt call a choose your own adventure audio book a game. Or the netflix black mirror episode. Visual novels arent games. You play them on a gaming console but theyre digital comic books fundamentally. Hellbalde i think has enough gameplay to be a game but there's definitely a threshold that at some point it ceases to be a game.
The marketing and price do reflect that though.
@scythelord the claim here is the price doesnt. I kinda agree but kind dont. $50 is way too high for me on an afternoon or two. Years gone by this wouldbe a game you rented for $2 and beat over a weekend.
Now gamepass makes it reasonable because ultimately you dont get gamepass FOR this game you get game pass for everything else and this just tags along.
So like i said...i half agree
yeah even the mention of digital foundry was scary lol but its just shares and not like majority
Kingdom Hearts titles coming to PC, but STILL 358/2 days has NEVER gotten a re-release.
When will IGN buy spawn wave Media?
I give the ign acquisitions a 1 out of 5, too much companies.
In my mind all games still launch on Tuesdays. Can’t really remember when they made the shift to Thursday/fridays.
The System Shock Remake just came out on consoles and I'm genuinely interested in it. However, it is technically a fairly old game and those games won't work that well for modern players (and console players), because the standard is very different nowadays. Can anyone tell me, how this version handles all of it? Is it still a good game worth playing? I've never played it, but I'm interested in giving it a try.
I bought it a couple months ago on gog and its pretty good, definitely a game that doesnt hold your hand. It also requires you paying attention and taking mental notes of things that you see or find to piece together how you make it to the next level with your limited resources. Definitely worth a try.
If you have a PC, you can find a demo on GOG or Steam. My opinion, after playing the demo, is that I really like what I played, and the demo convinced me to buy the full game which is now in my backlog. For reference, I play a lot of FPS games with an Xbox controller, and I had no trouble with System Shock. It wasn't at all awkward or anything like that. The demo just pulled me right in, and I wanted more.
@@VEN0M415 I see. Thanks. So is it too difficult for modern players? For reference: I've played all Bioshock games, DOOM, DOOM Eternal, all Wolfenstein games and various first-person horror games on consoles (which have a lot of very difficult puzzles). Some of them I had to play on lower difficulties, but I've beaten them all. How difficult is System Shock compared to those games?
@@SpeedbreakerNo1 I'd set Cyber to 1, because the cyberspace just sucks, there's no point playing these sections on anything but easy IMHO. That said, there are many modern players that enjoy difficult games; especially Metroidvanias often tend to be extremely difficult compared to mainstream games. System Shock isn't brutally difficult or unfair, but not a walk in the park like e.g. Bioshock on normal.
I love games like hellblade. I am a little saddened that the run time is like 89 hours but it does remind me to a degree not exactly kind of like my playthrough of Alan Wake. What I mean by that is the gameplay elements like where there isn't a ton of enemies and you're walking around the story is way better in Alan Wake by far and it is one of my favorite horror game franchise building off of Alan Wake and now control. But I played it in Game Pass and I think a $50 price tag isn't bad for this type of game with the effort that was put into it. I do believe an 80/85 is the perfect rating for this game. It's crazy because when I look at this game I see nothing but potential of what games could be like down the road if they were a little more flushed out and a little more work was put into it. When it comes to the visuals of this game and the audio of this game it is to me unmatched by any other game. However that's the part that makes me sad because I feel like the rest of the game just isn't there with the gameplay and story or even length of the game. I'm in chapter 5 and I very unsure if there's a reason to have a playback after I finish it. Usually I never do playbacks to begin with but I did with hellblade but this one just seems like I've seen it all and that's all there is
I have my own thoughts about Hellblade 2. But haven't we all been shouting for the last few years at AAA studios, to stop chasing higher and higher graphical fidelity and focus more on the gameplay and content?
Yep. Don't know if you've noticed by now, but gamers only like talking big.
If we actually followed through COD, Madden and FIFA would be dead franchises, no one would pre-order games or buy loot boxes, and titles like Hi-Fi Rush and Psychonauts 2 would make the top 10 selling charts.
@@mappybc6097Real gamers are a vocal minority. That’s not our fault.
I mean technically...Ninja Theory isn't a AAA studio.
@@Level_Eleven dude play what you like. vocal what? gamers nowadays annoy me. you complain too much. vote with your pockets.
Nobody cares what we're shouting...
Ugh - games media consolidating...less reason to trust reviews for game buying.
19:24 I don't even play with Audio because I have Twitter, UA-cam, Hockey, or a Streaming service going on second screen while I play.
Imagine IGN acquires Spawn Wave next?!?!
IGN is like the ESPN of gaming. People stopped caring like 15 years ago.
Man, Microsoft’s new Recall “feature” seems very creepy. I don’t like where tech is heading.
Big tech Companies experimenting withe creepy tech doesn't suprise me but I don't blame u.
It actually isn't creepy at all to me. It's client side. MS has since at least windows 10 launch tracked what you do with your cursor and keyboard for their analysis of how people use the OS. That is worse. The recall feature is being overblown for no good reason. It's a local feature, not sending anything to microsoft. That's what I want more of. Keep all the AI local and not cloud.
I dont want my computer taking photos of my stuff. I also dont want it to consume my SSD with its recording.
Also it's not "overblown". It's a feature no one asked for. Thats why it's even more sketchy.

Japan in general does Thursday releases, however NCL will often release big ticket titles on Friday instead
“Not fun to play” games should have lower scores.
Tell that to Death Stranding. BUT KOJIMA!
A game being fun or not is completely subjective dude.
@@shreder75that's what im saying. Every one comparing it to order 18 something while i think its more like death stranding. While hellblade is a short schizophrenia walking sim Death stranding is a LONG depressed delivery sim. Helblade is a like a long movie while death stranding is a series.
@x0Fang0x the order was actually good, but it was very short for a full priced game.
Death Stranding is one of the worst games I've ever played. Polished, but the gameplay sucks and the story doesn't make up for it. Die Hardman. Seriously?
@@codeen66 Well obviously, but when something is touted more as an "experience" and not "fun" then it should be lower lol. It's a videoGAME ffs
Honestly the biggest surprise about the Thousand Year Door is the fact that it's a major first party release from Nintendo that doesn't seem to have leaked out early.
Amazon and Walmart might be the culprit. Lol
Maybe "not worth buying but definitely need to check it out" is the ultimate strategy for Microsoft to drive subscriptions
Been asking for Kingdom Hearts on Steam for AGES and I'm glad that it is FINALLY making the jump to Steam!
Would love to re-play KH2 at 60 FPS this time! :D
None of the poll question choices apply to us. We have a triple subwoofer system but the main / full-range front speakers are only two-channel -- no surround sound. Our fronts are Adam Audio A7V studio monitors on stands and we have three REL HT/1003 subs. Also floor and wall sound absorption treatments. Sounds magnificent.
"Take a page out of this book here". I applaud you, sir.
WTF I'm honestly shocked surround sound is the LEAST used sound setup.
I would have thought it was way way way higher up the list.
Headphones should have been the least, not the most.
That's wild.
Gameplay doesn't have to be overly spastic or laden with mechanics, systems and menus to be satisfying. I'm a big fan of the cinematic puzzle platformer genre, stemming from the original Prince of Persia and Another World. It really blows my mind how increasingly boxed in the medium gets, after 40+ years of exploratory, experimental games setting a lot of precedent.
After years of waiting, Spawn puts on glasses once again 😎
I don't care what corporate media says about video games.
Neither do I, but too bad the game devs /companies do
Looked up those glasses and said nah… $600 is the cost of the handheld. Not worth it.
RIP Ninja Theory. You had a good run
Except when they made DmC: Devil May Cry. Everyone hated that.🤣
Stop this. They aren't going anywhere
@@G360LIVEhahaha more fool you if you believe anything from Microsoft now.
Most of those outlets already acted like a hive mind, so buying them all seems like a waste of money lol
Why wasn't 2.0 and 2.1 speaker set up in your poll? At least have an option for them combined. It isn't just a matter of TV speakers, soundbar or full surround. Before the speakers died, that is what I used for my PC.
IGN please dont take my digital foundry away!
DF is independent, although Reedpop held a minority share that is now owned by IGN. They aren't going away anytime soon!
so how does those Viture glasses support people who wear glasses? so contacts only? you wear glasses dont you?
Jon playing the Steam Deck using the Viture glasses should be a meme.
Of course spawn wave owns surround sound. This guy owns nearly everything
I despise "games" that just want to be movies... Just... Make a movie... When I want to play a game I want my brain to be tested, when I want to watch a movie I want to let my brain relax. Which means when I play a game and it's a movie pretending to be a game it makes me fall asleep.
With the PS5, and PS4 to a lesser extent, I really like when games use the controller speaker. It's used really well in FFVII Rebirth and Stellar Blade. I would use headphones, but it's too cool to see what games use the controller speaker and how they use it. Therefore, I typically play games using my soundbar for audio.
I purchased Paper Mario Thousand Year Door 20 years ago on GameCube only to have it on my backlog this whole time. Tomorrow I purchase it again on the Switch but I have vowed to play it and complete it. 😅
a thursday release is good since some friday releases are often delivered on the next available day (monday)
Apparently Paper Mario TTYD is available at my local Walmart. Curiosity has been piqued.
BOLLOCKS! Of course they didn't have it. Guess ill have to wait until tomorrow. LOL
Pm switch is DEI censored
That copilot button comment of the day got me thinking....Has anyone heard anything about an Elite series 3 controller? My 2 is starting to show it's age.
J&L Games in Midtown Manhattan has had Paper Mario TYD available all week, I just picked up one of their last copies today! If you’re local, go quick!
Thankfully there already is a VR MOD for Hellblade 2. Played the first game in VR and want to play 2 in VR as well.
I’ve noticed the almost all turn based games coming out within last 20 years are doing rather well with recent games like star ocean and paper Mario being latest ones. It seems that a lot of players are just rather tired of this action game trend already that’s made basically every game kinda feel and run like a hack and slash whatever is in front of you with lil to no strategy require that’s been cheapened even further with micro transactions at the ready to help you basically overcome anything for a small fee. I honestly really think we need to move back to more strategy and turn based combat system in games to bring back that feeling and immersion of having to figure out how to clear areas with puzzles and find enemy weakness that made the gaming experience what it used to be. Now you rarely hear anyone get stuck in a game puzzle or boss and if they do most the time they either drop the game for something else and never go back to it due to poor attention spans or lack of interest or at best look up a UA-cam guide. I think this is why hell divers 2 has done so well it does strategy and combat in a way a lot of games really don’t.
I just wish that IGN won't buy Spawn Wave or Spawn Cast.
Are you kidding? Jon should totally sell to IGN and make the money he deserves. I'd do it.
I've been enjoying paper mario, only criticism I have is text takes too long to finish, can't speed it up unless you've already seen it.
The placement for the XR glasses had to be intentional joke right?
Forgot to mention the sounds of Hellblade 2, incredible audio.
It feels like Hellblade 2 should've been a tech demo that should've come out when the series x released
It's just a demo 4 years into the gen instead 🤣
The game feel like the first hellblade game too me with better combat. If you played hellblade than you sould know what you are getting with hellblade 2. Gamers are so negative lately
@@paulmodjeski8958 Yeah, this console war thing is definitely killing gaming sites/channels credibility. But I think most people are starting to spot the hypocritical nature of it, because it's impossible for an 80 or higher to be good for one game. And turn around and be bad for another game based on platform. It's getting harder and harder to find honest opinions and not personal bias affecting their taste and score.
Hellblade 2 sounds more like a tech demo, like The Order: 1886.
The first game I remember coming out on Thursday instead of Tuesday was the Kirby 20th anniversary Dream Collection on Wii. I remember it because I accidentally made my job at the time break street date because I saw we had copies in the back and thought it came out on Tuesday not Thursday.
Hellblade 2 is quite a feat graphically. It's gorgeous! The gameplay... well, if you didn't like the first game, you won't like this one. I think a 75-82 score would be accurate. If it were based on graphics alone, it would be a 100.
I dont plan on playing hellblade 2 but i have no problem with it being a graphical showcase. Every game has its own lane. I think its cool to have a game that pushes the boundaries of what a game can look like in the future. Everytime i see footage of it, it amazes me. Even John recommended it for that purpose so i dont get the hate.
people mad they can’t jonk it to the main character
It strikes me as the sort of thing that everyone would've been able to appreciate more had it been a launch title. There's already a stigma against cinematic "experiences" among gamers, so it's not especially surprising it gets shat on even if it provides enough real gameplay to justify being interactive at all
@@zeturkey4107 yeah that part baffles me. Like it's a bad thing to have cinematic experiences. Having action, puzzles, platforming mixed with cinematic Storytelling. Isn't that what we all want?
Hellblade 2 is a UA-cam watch. Just a 5-6 h our movie.
Using the term "jounalism" with IGN is pushing the envelope.
Hellblade 2 should have been a movie.
Hey I work at Best Buy our Nintendo rep told us that Nintendo will continue with Thursday releases going forward
So, I won't be looking at any Nintendo life stuff anymore then. Can't spell ignorant without IGN!

I felt that about god of war. A little bit just walk fight. Cutscene, scripted interactions while looking beautiful.

Xdefiant came out yesterday too
Where was the FTC for IGN?
this is why JRPG are the reAl bang for your dollar. 100 hours of gameplay
Can anyone no longer see community posts on the sub feed anymore as well? (Mobile/Android) I have to go to "post" to see them now. And the settings button doesn't help at all... I always forget to check the posts for the poll. 😭
Hellblade is supposed to be more of an experience than a game. That's what they delivered with the first one. Why anyone would expect that all of a sudden it would be more videogame than story, is beyond me.
I really want to play the Paper Mario remake, but tbh I can't tear myself away from Animal Well. That game is quite the rabbit hole of secrets. Literally.
Thousand year door is one of the funniest games ever created.
We are already so far beyond the point of no return regarding privacy in our day to day lives. With that in mind, I have to say that I am very excited and intrigued by where we'll be with AI tech in the next 5-7 years. And I'm especially interested to see how it is utilized in gaming.
i cant wait to see vids talking about how TTYD remake is a charmless souless game.
Considering that the switch is arm based and we are finally getting a next gen console, after seeing this, I believe maybe yeah we can play Final Fantasy 16 on 30FPS and is likely the reason nintendo bought a porting studio for third party games.
ill grab paper mario next month to use my monthly coupon unless a sale comes along for something i like
(Related to ydays qotd) Just bought some headphones for my pc etc, hope games sound much better than my dying very old bose soundlink 2. Speaker dies every few mins and ruins the flow of games. A monopoly on game reviews is a terrible thing, we've already seen some corruption in the review process with Starfield with every outlet calling it a masterpiece when it was far from it. All this is going to do is cause more anger among the gaming community when they buy a game based on reviews and get something completely different.
Game media did not call it masterpiece. It did not get any awards. It did not even get nominations. On metacritic it is 83. And IGN gave 7.
@@hododod246almost all the the xbox reviewers called it a masterpiece. I think it was a xbox reviewer who called it the Game of the generation, or was it the fans idk.

I remember playing the first Hellblade a few years ago, and it have good graphics, in general a great sensorial experience. But the gameplay didn't offer to much, just press forward, solve a puzzle, fight, repeat.
Without playing it, maybe the second one have the same problem.

4:14 thank goodness people are beginning to see that vr is heedless and holds back good studios from making games that we would actually want to play.
RIP London Studios 😔
It sounds like Ninja Theory is the next studio on the chopping block for Microsoft. Taking this long to come out, with this kind of critique on the game. I do hope they will still make a decent profit when the cost and revenue come in. But how do you do that for something that goes to Game Pass on day one?
I’ll never go back to Surface, I have a book 2, those things are horrible to draw with, they heat up a lot, can’t draw diagonal lines, they also auto updated to a point where the pen just stops working and you have to delete the driver and restart the surface every time.
