As a South African with family origns from Rhodesia...and having spoken to family members who fought in the war.I wish to compliment you on a very well reserched overview of the tactics used. And secondly to note that many European people now understand our plight due to the demographic changes in their respective countries, and the lodgical cross cultural clashes that will obviously result. And the realisiation that the global cabal /political class sold you out same as us

I would definitely add the SADF Recces and 32 battalion that often set up ops for the likes of 61 mech in the border war where they were fighting against SWAPO, FAPLA, the Cuban army and even Russians who were often operating in a "consulting " role. These guys were brilliant at counter insurgencies and probably the main reason that the SADF had such a high operational efficiency. Sadly the politicians threw all these highly skilled and trained units down the drain and they deserved better.

Very good insight into the bush war. I would like to correct one thing and that is that the British did not have any success against the Boer guerillas during the Anglo Boer war. The times they did win battles was when the Boers tried to fight a conventional war against the British. The British were on the point of giving up when Lord Kitchener came up with his scorched earth policy. By burning down all Boer farms, killing all the cattle and then shipping the woman and children off to concentration camps they broke the Boers spirit. The British let 25 000 children die in the concentration camps and we thought the Nazis came up with this horrible idea. That is why the Boers surrenderd. What is the use of fighting if even if you win, you come back to nothing.

Hey, I'm a 2nd generation expatriate Jewish Rhodesian with a 72 year old Jewish father who served as a radio engineer in the RLI (hon. discharged in 1979) and then emigrated to Israel wherein I was born and now live. I watched this video with him, and he generally really liked it, but he had just a few additions:
-He recalls that while the terrorists didn't have standard vehicles, they did occasionally manage to steal vehicles and for small periods of time they did have 'standard' vehicles going around but nothing permanent.
-Secondly, their arsenal did actually possess FN-FALs which they stole and then produced but they seemingly used AKs more since they just had more of them.
-Third, my dad really wanted to highlight that while the RLI is seen as the main fighting force in the war, the RAR (Rhodesian African Rifles) were an instrumental fighting force and he saw them seemingly everywhere.
He really liked the video (as did I)

Guinea Bissau 1963-1974. Angola 1961-1975. Mozambique 1964-1974. Rhodesia 1973-1979. Flechas, Comandos, Paras, Fuzas, GEPs, RLI, RAR, Selous Scouts, SAS. All special forces in those combat theaters. Swamps, tropical forests, savannah, desert. Who was better? Hard to say. To me both Portuguese and Rhodesians proved to be the best counterinsurgency forces in Africa. South Africans were superior firepower and better equiped for a conventional war. The Portuguese Fuzas were masters of the swamps. The Flechas unbeatable in Angola. GEPs spread chaos and confusion in Frelimo. Rhodesian Fireforce amazing and Selous Scouts crossborder raids outstanding. But all were limited to small units with limited air power.

The Rhodesians ran short of men and were struggling, but they were never beaten. The war was lost by the arrival in Rhodesia of one Dr. Kissinger, with his meat-axe diplomacy, who delivered the subtle message that the major powers intended Rhodesia to become majority ruled, like now, and opposition to this would result in immediate chastisement. Ask any Rhodesian (if you can find one) black or white, how good a policy that was. The bread-basket became the basket-case and is the biggest tragedy of Africa. The Rhodesia Armed Forces, specialy the Special Forces were trained by the Portuguese Special Forces ( specialy by the Commandos officers) who since 1961 until 1974 were deployed in the Portuguese African Colonies of Angola, Mozambique and Guine Bissau.
The Portuguese Special Forces from mid's 1960 until 1974 were some of the Best Special Forces units in the world.
Inclusive they also Help the South African Army training their special forces who were fighting comunist guerrila in Nambibia and later in the South of Angola with UNITA against the Angolan Army( FAPLA) and the 20.000 Cubans sent by Fidel Castro to protect the comunist regime that was in power in Angola after the independence.

      @TimSerras 5 місяців тому +2

They colaborated but not training. Portuguese special forces had a different type of training. Rhodesians were basically a copy of British Army procedure. Same with South Africans. It was a combination of guerrilla warfare with strong logistical support. Fire force is a clear example. An improved version of Portuguese helicanhão backed by 4 or more choppers but Rhodesians improved by adding DC3 paratroopers and a killing zone. Portuguese prefered surprised attacks even by night with minimum fire power. In Senegal Portuguese marines (fuzileiros) raided and destroyed a major PAIGC base using that procedure. South Africans were more conventional, using incredible fire power, even developing huge howitzers like the G5 and G6. The exception were the Three Two Batallion, which was Portuguese speaking and had ex-Portuguese army Angolans in it , that operated in Angola.

They were behind the Infamous 32 Battalion Buffalo who was very successfull fighting the MPLA and the Cubans in Angola. Many died in 1987 during the great Battle of Cuito Cuanavale.

The British actually lost battles against the Zulu. Their first invasion they lost. Second invasion the British lost many battles -the only reason they "won" due to the concentration camps where they kept children and women were 1000's died. They also had a scourged land approach going. Personally I have no respect for the British Empire or its war machine.

I said Boer War, not the Zulu war. But it's all good. Honest mistake

@@GhettoGunslinger sure. Just one last drop 🙃 The Brits decided to attack the Boer provinces coming from Natal side which was zulu kingdom. Hence their initial battles were with the Zulu and it did not go well for them. After tbey said their peae the Brits armed, trai ed and uniformed zulu's to help them. One of these groups actual.y eliminated a small Boere commando. Be that as it may lets leave it there 👍. I am however curious - with how many countries did the British wage war and number of people killed. ....if ever you get some indication please let me know. God bless,

no problem .....i'm with you. The british came from the eastern side and had to go through the area which was then the Republic of Natalia.....now known as Kwazulu Natal. Zulu territory to get to the two boer republics hence their battles with the zulu's. Why I mentioned this - the zulus fought with spears and shields only. So if the british war machine was so fenominal how come they lost battles considering they had rifles, canons, etc. The boers were armed with Mausers only. Very few canons and the british could not overwhelm them & thats why the despicable cowards started to burn crops and houses. With the excuse that was a humanitarian crises they " kindly"offered to house the woman and children in concentration camps +- a 140 if memory serves me right. The people starved, died disease, went through the winter with no warm clothing.

@@ToastSoon4808Add to that that the British forces peaked at over 400000 well equipped men, where as the boers peaked at approximately 40000, who had to provide their own equipment and clothing, except for the Mauser and a few canons (of which some were home made). A 10 to 1 ratio. Hardly a proud achievement when 10 school yard bullies try to beat a single boy on a play ground and when they can not really succeed in getting him to submit, they target his baby sister. Today it is considered one of the biggest atrocities of the British Empire.

The Terrs were not "Communists". They were African Nationalists who could only get weaponry in quantity from mostly Communist states. At the time it was useful for Rhodesia to play on Cold War rhetoric about "Communists" because it garnered some sympathy in the West, but the reality is that it was all about land and opportunity..

If they were not communist orientated why are they today still exhibit communist ideologies? That they started out as so called nationalists is somewhat true, but very soon, under communist influences changed their nationalist ideologies on freedom and land reformation, to communist ideologies.

      Why have commie styled flags?
Could you even point to Rhodesia on a world map?
