Sebastian Bach. A favorite of mine as a teen struggling to survive the 80's alone. Some people are not aware that Sebastian Bach had bel canto (operatic) vocal training in his role as the lead soprano in his Anglican Church choir, and that his family wanted to send him to Julliard for more voice training. But he decided he wanted to be a rock singer, so instead of going to Julliard, he took that wonderful instrument of his, learned how to apply distortion to it in a way that he would not damage his vocal cords, and went off to join the rock band, Skid Row. In addition to being a rock singer, he’s done live theater on Broadway. He was in the live version of The Rocky Horror Show, played the lead role in Jekyll and Hyde, and was a great Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. Some of his Broadway performances are on UA-cam.
He will occasionally sing with a clean tone, like the last note in Wasted Time, showing you he actually could sing opera well.

It actually makes me so depressed for the younger generation when I hear you say "Who is this singer?"!!!! Most "younger" people make fun of 80's metal...yet never listened to it. Granted, there was some really cheesy, terrible bands that came out...but most of them were in the early 90's...It was a whole different time man...standing in line for concert tickets for days, actually buying the music and having a physical copy of it, counting down the days a new cassette was going to be released so you could be the first one to get it, open it, smell it and check out whether or not it had the lyrics in it...which was a bonus! Over the years, my taste for music has gotten alot heavier and now listen to pretty much metalcore only, but will always have a soft-spot for 80's dirty metal! Horns up my friend!

I know a lot of people are gonna throw the other ballads out there like 18 & life and I remember you, but to really get an understanding of Bach and his vocals, you need to hear stuff like Slave to the grind, Monkey business and Youth gone wild. That will give you a much better understanding and also show you he was not a one trick pony.

this song is heavy...meaning that he has lost a freind to addiction. I have always thought that is what this song is about. You can hear the pain; the loss; the anger in his voice. I have heard this song more times than I can count, and it still tears me up and gives me chills. The album that it is the closer of - Slave To the Grind - is probably one of the most underated albums in all of metal!! Every song on it is legit...truth!! Phenomenal band from that era!!

Welcome to your first time hearing Sebastian Bach. My all time favorite vocalist. The dude is insane and still is. I just saw him live on the 30th anniversary skid row tour in Cleveland Ohio and he sounded amazing. I have videos of it up on my UA-cam. What you said about him having everything you would want in a vocalist is spot on. The dudes range is crazy. Listen to 18 & life, quicksand Jesus, in a darkened room, or monkey business. They all showcase his vocals very well. A lot of people say he can’t sing, and where I agree he doesn’t sound like he did back then. He is still really good though.
