Choir Part Practice: Duet Version of Panis Angelicus, César Franck, (1822 - 1890).
Panis angelicus is from the hymn “Sacris solemniis” written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi. César Franck in 1872 set this for voice in his “Messe à trois voix” Opus 12. This version is a duet for Soprano and Tenor.
The angelic bread
becomes the bread of men;
The heavenly bread
ends all prefigurations:
What wonder!
The Lord is eaten
by a poor and humble servant.
Panis angelicus
fit panis hominum;
Dat panis coelicus
figuris terminum:
O res mirabilis!
Manducat Dominum
Pauper, servus et humilis
