  • Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) are a medium sized grouse, living in different prairie ecosystems throughout Canada, Alaska and the Midwest US states. Not uncommon, but often very hard to find, unless they are displaying on their leks in April and May. The lek is an area made up of relatively flat vegetation or sometimes hard dirt, on which the males display, rapidly moving their feet (as if they were dancing), call and often make short display flights to attract females. The females will seek out the most dominant male and copulate with that bird, leaving him and the other males so she can build her nest (on the ground, in an area covered by higher vegetation) and start breeding.
