  • Best Budget Overland Vehicle, kept secret, the 1992 Nissan Patherfinder SEV6 with LSD option, is the basis for our budget overland build platform. With the right options, you really have a great bang for buck 4wd truck chassis, that is well documented, has great aftermarket, is affordable to repair and looks great too.
    Be sure to check out the other videos in the WD21 series, as many updates have come!

    Good job. I have a 93 my self. Don't forget the WD21's have a fully boxed frame as well that no one else offered. Can't wait to see what's next.

      I forgot a few things actually, but in the moment making the vid and trying to get it done...I covered the bases I hoped that entry level overlanders may be interested in. Definitely a great point that the truck is on a fully boxed frame, especially versus the next gen Pathfinder which is unibody. Thanks for watching!

      Another interesting thing they had that no other small suv had was the factory 31s. I'm pretty sure even the jeep cherokees had to be lifted about 2" to fit 31s, and the pathfinder se had them stock. That means they had the highest diff clearance for the class at the time. That's a big deal with offroad vehicles...

      mica davis correct jeeps have to be lifted pathfinder can just crank the Torsion Bars and throw on 32x11.5 no problems until you start jumping lol also vg30s can last a stupid long time and won’t warp

    Had an 86.5 Nissan Hardbody SE V6 4x4 5 speed pick up truck and it was insanely awesome! Then someone totaled it out. Otherwise I would probably still have it today. Several years ago, I bought a the last year Nissan made a great Pathfinder. 1995 SE V6. It was truly awesome! Miss it in a lot of ways. Outside of the Xterra that was made a few more years, I would not suggest anything Nissan today. They lost their edge.

      Xterra's are definitely the 1st gen replacement, but beyond those...bets are off.

    Got a ‘92 SE myself, love everything about it. Great video, you touched on basically every important aspect of the SE, including getting the “LEGO wheel” terminology correct lol. You should check out if you’ve got a Sport/Touring switch on your center console anywhere, I’ve got one right next to my hand break that adjusts the factory adjustable suspension. Pretty crazy stuff for a 1992 SUV if you ask me. Subbed, looking forward to seeing this build!

      Aargh, lucky! My 93 is an xe so even though it's received 31s, lsd rear, and a few other things the xe lacked i don't know if I can add the variable suspension! I did, however, add HID projectors to the stock headlight housings, a cut down roof rack from an xterra, the center console from an R50, and the 3.3L from a frontier. It was interesting determining the value of my truck when I got rear ended a couple of years ago...

    Love your take on these rigs. I just sold a 93 SE and regret it. The only weak link on these rigs is the Jatco RE4R01A transmissions. Mine didn't have 2nd or 4th gear. Was like that when I picked it up for $400. Drove the truck for 2 years like that. It was fine around town. The AC worked great and I loved how narrow it is. I switched to a Montero, another underrated Japanese 4x4. I will be following this build!

      Thanks for the comment and the sub! I have a lot more vids planned ahead shortly. I integrate some on road (Corvette related usually) and off road (this build and some desert exploration), and I have some great vids planned. My trans is definitely making some bearing noise on the input shaft but all in due time...it'll live for now... I think.

      Just in case you didn't know, the transmission from an xterra is bolt on for pathfinders. Some of those even came with (iirc) six speed transmission. When mine goes out I'm swapping one of those in so i can cruise the freeway at lower RPMs.

    Replace the gear oil in the trans with 5.1 quarts of gl4 gear oil. Remove the shifter and fill it through there. Originally it only took about 3 quarts which was not sufficient for the manual transmission eventually leading to the bearing noise you here. Mine has it as well. But almost 4 years later it's still doing fine. And now the noise is almost completely gone. Also tightening the torsion bars for lifting the front is a free way to lift the truck a decent 2in. Keep the 31's with original gearing. It's a surprisingly capable rig in basically stock form compared to many SUVs. And 4 low makes this thing a tank.

    I've owned the 95 wd21 Pathfinder 4x4 and now a 99 sr5 4runner. The 4runner when up to snuff w clean fuel injectors, pump, coils etc (same w Pathfinder) the sr5 out powers the wd21 hands down. When it comes to the 4x4 I actually think the wd21 did better mainly because of the limited slip rear axle. Now if you get the limited 4runner you have a rear diff locker which is obviously king in comparison. The biggest thing is the frames on either model if coming from the rust belt. Definitely no complaints on my old Pathfinder, matter of fact gave it to my brother and he's now in the 3rd year of owning it as I did as well. Can't go wrong with either. Generally speaking you will definitely find the Pathfinder cheaper than the 4runner.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  3 роки тому

      Yeah thats my experience precisely. 4runners have Tacoma and Land Cruiser reputation behind them...it just raises interest for the entire category. I think its what makes the Pathfinder so appealing because it was built to compete, and frankly is a pretty good truck overall. Just has a little less cubic interior space and Toyotas of the time just looked great, though the hardbody styling was also respectable. Pathfinder is definitely the underdog but it makes it cheap and accessible for people.

    I’m original owner of 89 s.e. Manual trans. 213000 original miles. Garage kept. Regular maintenance and oil changes. Floor pan on rear passenger needs new one. Aegean blue paint. Full size spare. Parts I’ve swapped out over the years. Master slave cylinder for clutch. Shocks 4 times. Drive belt pulley. Brakes. Exhaust 5 times but this done at Midas who give lifetime warranty so it was just labor. Oil and gear fluid changes every 3000 miles. Starter, starter relay. Batteries about 4. Regular tune ups. Car has never left me broke down on side of road even when battery crapped the bed I was still able to jump start it. I only wish Nissan would do new retro build like Ford did with Bronco. Never good on gas about 19 on highway but dependability was what I was looking for. Love this car. First new one I ever owned.

      Doing an update soon. I am not sure on the "great aftermarket" depending on what type of mods you mean. I think there is an abundance of aftermarket for overland and offroad in general, mich of which is adaptabke to these trucks. For instance, I have modified jeep fender brackets, mounting quad LED's on each side. I will show it in a vid ahead.

Weak spots are rust on the body and its generally weak around the front suspension with some parts that need to be changed almost per year. Frame is very healthy like the rest of the car! Engine runs great! If you have the carburator v6 *do not ever put LPG!!!* It will kill the engine after few thousend miles.

The owners have them priced right up there w 4runners. Then there's 2 pretty rough Pathfinders over 2k on the odometer , both for around 3 grand ea. At those prices, l will look for a 4runner Limited w a locker. Not knocking the Pathfinder, I like them alot, for all your stated reasons,...but prices are too high to me, and ive been looking for 6 mos.

We've got tons of great information about all kinds of nissans and we love to see new people join. Speaking of overlanding, do you have the 25 gallon tank? Thanks for the tank info. On the generations, according to all I've ever read, WD21 is 1986-1995..i.e. first generation truck. The "facelift" occurred that updated the appearance, but didn't change gens. R50 was the second gen. I looked at wikipedia to even see, and it appears that's how the generations were laid out.

I have a 93 and someone in town has an 87 and I'm super jealous. The old two doors are getting hard to find and they are sweet. But yeah, same frame, same engine options generally, and not much of a difference. Kind of like when they went to the round dash style in 93(iirc). I have been 4 wheeling for many years. Your philosophy on running in 2 wheel drive to stay out of trouble is flawed. You increase the chance of breakage running that way. All the stress is focused on those rear axles. Especially during climbs. You are greatly increasing your chances for rear driveshaft, axle, or, ring and pinion failure. Better idea would be to run it in 4x4 and stay within your driver and vehicle capabilities.

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  5 років тому +2

      I understand what youre saying for sure. I think I'd have to communicate clearer the type of environment we often travel in. Nevada off road is mostly loose dirt, rocks...just rough road/overland type situations. I run 2wd as a gauge of the surface and go back and forth, solely when I am alone (which is a risk all in itself). When we go out into the Lake Mead region with beach sand and more terrain, I travel 4low primarily. The goal is more overland for us, vs hard wheeling or getting into real situations, mostly because it is always solo, so I leave a large margin. Point taken though, for sure. Thansk for watching and commenting. I am putting together next vid now...overlanding on a budget pt 2! Found some sick deals!

      I considered this move but, I am not sure I will stay in this platform. I'd like to stay with a less than full size chassis, but would like to have LSx based drivetrain. Owning two corvettes, having full diagnostics/tooling/hptuner capability makes that desirable to me. LS swapping the wd21 isnt really feasible so, it will likely cause me to make a change. For now, the engine is solid, truck runs great for light duty and overlanding. Gonna runnit for a while and just keep upgrading. Video coming shortly on where its at.

    How does the XE compare?

    • @KnightDriveTV
      @KnightDriveTV  4 роки тому

      XE's seem to be the most commonly available. They were moderately equipped, but more of a "base" level. You definitely have to check the XE's for rear discs and/or the LSD, as these were optional. The SE (like we have), was the "sport" and it gave us the LSD, the electrically adjustable shocks, and a pretty moderate option list (leather seats, sunroof, tire carrier, roof carrier, nerf bars, etc). There is the LE, luxury edition which was max options...leather, certain interior controls that were different, etc. In this era, any of these trucks are acceptable and affordable...I think you just need to obtain the cleanest example you can find.

      Working on a big one now, for this vehicle, with some vids that will stem from it. Took a bit to accumulate select items and mods. Videos comin shortly. Vehicle has been great, lots to show.

      @@KnightDriveTV Super, I had 94 as my first truck and would LOVE to see the tiny trucks potential. Can't wait thanks.

      @@Robertperrin91 I have the LSD option and stock 31's. I have pushed this truck repeatedly and have to say, the LSD is a real advantage vs my old 4runner and the one like I featured in the other video, where we went up the canyon. I am planning a small lift and higher rear spring weights for equipment. I intend to really get this ol wd21 put there. Vid will show all as soon as I can wrap it up for a solid update. 1-2wks maybe, but I have another overland video coming in meantime with a lot of various action inside.
