- You know the tired trope - the fired up chef, tossing pots and pans everywhere, screaming at people, barking orders, having a mini-meltdown as everyone murmurs "yes chef", "no chef" under their breath.
TV shows, movies, and books all glorify the Angry Chef, or at least poke fun at them. It's something that is very real, though, and anyone who has worked in the hospitality industry has either worked for one, or know someone who has.
But that begs the question - WHY ARE THEY SO ANGRY? It's a good question, and one that I tackle on this episode.
I share what would set ME off back in the day, and common reasons for why chefs may get unhinged. Of course, it's not acceptable, and things are changing - and I share reasons why the industry is turning away from the boring pissy chef.
I also share ways that YOU can calm yourself down when you feel like you're about to burst at the seams with anger. These are things I did while on the line (and now in my office and out and about!) that truly WORK.
And you know I mean business when I wear MY whites on the show! First time ever.

Imagine the camera in the corner is great. And today there probably is. Thanks for the valuable insights.
One almost has to purposefully encounter enraging situations to undergo the training to get better at handling things.
In that way, it's another mechanism to see these 'challenges' as a chance for growth rather than an inconvenience.
Thanks kindly for this! The camera is a good one, but I think in the end we can go one deeper and do it regardless if there's a camera there or not. But we start where we need to start! Thanks again for being here!
My chef always asked me why I did “insert stupid thing” and what I thought the outcome would be.
Then he would curse me and say that I need to plan ahead and then fix my “fk up”
14 years cooking, and 4 years being a chef, major difference after 8-9 years of cooking.
Thank you for this video. I’m currently a hotel student. But we still need to learn how the kitchen works and cook.
From loving cooking, to hating cooking as a whole and despise it to its core.
I understand it’s a high stress area. Doesn’t justify swearing and cussing and straight out being rude.
Thanks to my loved ones and best friend, I’m trying my best to be patient or some say, a “doormat”
Idk how much longer I can handle it
i wanna be a chef but i had anger issues. i really don't wanna be angry in kitchen. rage blinds me and before i know it i regret what i had done.
I appreciate your self-awareness around your anger. I definitely wouldn't suggest stepping into a very challenging space that will only make it worse! It won't serve you or others - and of course you recognize that. What are you doing to help you in this journey to more inner peace / calm?
@@searedpodcastso far i try to be angry quietly. screaming in bath tub, throw rocks to ponds, smash a glass bottle at a quiet place, let anger out without anyone knowing.
Chef , i do feel like they often had the old guard do the angry drill instructions to them , so they do it now. Personally i don't stand for it , i get it within reason by there's a limit to everything.
Agreed. It's been modeled, and so many of us didn't know any better. But there is SOOOO much better out there - so many other ways to motivate your brigade / crew. And like you, more and more people aren't standing for it. It's hard to yell at a crew when they've all quit and you have an empty kitchen! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm so angry!!!! You should be a chef and have a TV show!
Excelent! The dog example of correction is a great tool. Thanks Chef. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
