The title of this game makes me think it should be a board game with a 1,000 page rulebook that takes a week to play.
Reading your comment gave me a pang of nostalgia for the early days of pc strategy gaming where I looked forward to reading the manual and learning the systems.
honestly having played many board games like that, it's better as a video game that does most of the math for you haha
Campaign for North Africa is like 1000 hours.
Memoir 44 is much simpler. Elegant card-driven system that has been used in several similar games.
With literally hundreds of tiny cardboard tokens that each represent different units with miniscule differences that you are required to memorize solely based on arcane sigils.
Google 0200 hours game
"Maybe I'm reaching that age where a man gets really into WW2". As a 38 year old man who just recently has become insanely interested in everything WW2, this absolutely killed me.
haha I'm 38 as well and I only get more and more interested in WW2 as the days go by. You're not alone brother!
Almost 28 here, I think I went into some heavy WW2 renaissance when I vanished in the tabletop WW2 war games a year ago. It's a great stuff!
@@gangsterHOTLINEme too 38 but I started my gaming journey with ww2 game cod 1 & i got saturated with it after cod5 especially fps games, now I only look for some complex rts games this came as a surprise i always wanted to play turn based ww2 game ❤️❤️
What took ya so long!?!
I got super interested in WWII as I turned up 15 😂
Thank you for this : it is much deeper or more complex than I thought (the Tasks system, factions, etc.). Fascinating. I think it deserves support.
And even a mission creator, which is surprising. That last bit is not my thing, but still.
This game was one I was on the fence for as I've spent (looks at steam) 5k hours in XCOM. But no modding support kind of kills that for me which is unfortunate. Luckily I can just fire up a new load order of WOTC and get to work.
Thank for the video. The unpredictability in difficulty kind of worries me, but it still looks like a rewarding title to play. Onward to 300k. All glory to the algorithm.
You are a machine.
I find your reviews the most informative and detailed on UA-cam. Keep up the amazing job - thank you!
That mission creator is huge 😮. Perhaps they will get very creative with/if there are future updates/ expansions. Create review, Mort 👍
This reminds of Silent Storm game, it was amazing :D
ohhh iu miss silent storm games
Wow here's a name i haven't heard in ages. I LOVED that game when i was a kid...even though i basically had no idea what i was doing
Looking a this game makes me want to play Silent Storm Sentinels again.
Sentinels only? Not the first one?
@@ahnafahmed9545 Both are goofy fun.
“I’m reaching that age where a man gets really into WW2”…I love the phrases you sprinkle throughout your videos. Thank you, and keep it up.
New Mortismal video means instant like. This guy play all the games I like and I agree with most of his points on any game. I'm playing or have already played most of the games he is reviewing but I still come to check.
Seems like an interesting WW2 Jagged Alliance -clone, but I'm always wary of tRPGs because the devs often have bizarre ideas of what a "difficulty curve" is supposed to be.
I was playing on Ironman Elite(Ironman here is not actually permadeath, instead it means you cannot lose a SINGLE mission) and enjoyed myself. Difficulty at least for me was just right(But then I do have years of experience playing Xcom, JA and other games like that). My biggest issue is that arbitrary decision about assault/ambush/stealth.(Stealth kills here are quite well made)
I am there with you, I am still not over the fact that in Expeditions: Rome the enemy archers have waaay more bow reach than your archers, and they pretty much ignore obstacles meant to block hits, that's not what I like when I say I like to play tRPGs with slightly upper difficult curve, sometimes things are just unfair.
I play TRPGs on PC and not console simply so I can use cheats for this exact reason.
I just beat my first campaign. I think this game is a ton of fun. I love how all the battles were hand-crafted and different. My biggest complaint is honestly that the game is too short.
If you liked this game, try Partisans 1941. It's a bit older and cheaper, real-time with pause, but otherwise feels and looks very similar.
Greatest gamer ever. Huge gamer. Hugeee
Going to wait a bit, but will be getting this game once I've completed a few others.
Daaaamn Mort this game was out only last week. You 100 percent it already. BEAST
Ive been loving the game. I took a risk, and got it on xbox before any reviews came out. Its probably one of my favorite turn based games. The only thing i dont like is the reinforcements. Ill do everything right, then out of nowhere ill have a 1 pop up right behind me, where 4 enemies are going to spawn. So all the effort turns into me just having my people sprint as far away as they can go from the spawn point.
I also really enjoy the stealth in it. Sure it isnt a super deep system. But great for how i like to play.
I actually like that about reinforcements. The element of surprise. It's like driving. You can do everything right and still someone else can cause an accident.
@@itree4 that's fair. I just wish it was more random maybe. I feel like every mission if I take to long it happens. It makes it less boring though, and makes me have to re think things. So even as a complaint of Mine it's still not a big deal
Just discovered your channel, very well explained video. Subbed
Interested in this game since it popped up on the we have ways of making you talk seems very good
FFI - Failure to Follow Instruction. A term from navy bootcamp back in the 70s.
I got it yesterday. I think you nailed it. Straight stealth missions I found way too easy and kind of tedious--it feels like checking off boxes, and I disliked them enough to the point where I started avoiding them unless I was really struggling with injured soldiers and I needed a gimme. I think both the stealth and ambush levels would have worked better on a timer rather than number of kills system, X turns before you're discovered. The combat is mostly great, though, although as you say the difficulty curve is all over the place and I don't think the mission prep really prepares you for what you're going to face.
Thanks for the review, Mort. This one looks great and I will definitely buy it, but not quite yet. My backlog is simply enormous. Baldur's Gate 3 probably ended up screwing over the rest of the industry with how much content they put out there. 220+h in already, on my Honour mode playthrough after having finished the game on Tactician already, and I have no intention of stopping.
This looks sick!
Thanks for the information, I totally missed this game.
I've had my eye on this game. gonna wait a week, maybe two, see how my financials are then get it
I'm playing this right now on elite and boy oh boy lol. U gotta really be on point with this 1, even behind full cover they'll get you sometimes
As a history buff myself, gonna definitely pick this up. Always love a good story as well.
As a history buff, "Vanguardized" guns are a massive no-no from me. Kar98k with detachable mag and M1 Carbine without a mag at all, has killed my interest completely.
Suprisingly, I feel the same recently, filling my library with WW2 strategy games, or playing ones I never really played until now.
We change throught the years, it's crazy.
Great review - thanks for this. Clear, concise & very informative. I especially appreciate your "take" on the game.
(For what it's worth, I still consider Hidden & Dangerous 2 the greatest Tactical games of all time)
Much worth a playthrough.
Reminds me of Partisans 1941, mostly due to the setting though, since that one was pausable real-time. Still, I had fun with that, so I'll probably give this one a try too.
Thanks for this game. It isn't negative that it isn't like all the other action paced chipmunk on caffein games out there.
please do a The Thaumaturge review
I'm personally hanging out for Commandos Origin's 😊
Why, u a commie?
Agree, a solid enough XCOM-like thst's rather better than most but, once again, lacks the depth and nuance of the now iconic XCOM itself. I think they missed a trick by not implementing permadeath which greatly increases the stakes and immersion. That said, it's charming enough and you can tell love and attention was put into it from the small development team.
I did buy the game on my Series X. I’m currently on my second play through. It’s a good game for what it is, similar to Midnight Suns and XCOM 2. The thing I don’t like about this game and XCOM 2, the percentages on successful shots practically mean nothing, a 90% shot has the same chance of missing as a 50% shot
First, thanks for the fine review as ever. Been watching your videos religiously for some time (on my personal account).
Second, in response to "maybe I'm reaching that age where a man really gets into WWII"... well we hope so! We're a story heavy, credible WWII tactics focused, leadership RPG. Hope you'll take a gander. We're announcing Early Beta today as it happens.
Regardless, may you wander in wisdom and have an amazing day ;-)

I do not understand why bodies disappear where in some games when discovered they trigger an alarm. In JA3 if a squad member needs to they can hunker down and get extra cover. Also healing takes time with a healing kit and a squadie with medical training.
I still like this game and enjoy the stealth. It can be a bit of a puzzle to position squad members before triggering an ambush. Also some enemies cannot be stealth killed and become premium targets -- damn those grenadiers and heavies!
Playing on pc. It's pretty good! Solid. 💯👍🏾
Have you ever played "Phantom Doctrine" or maybe an older game like "Harpoon" by Larry Bond?
If not, could be an interesting retro review in the latter case and an interesting cold war follow up (2018 game for Phantom Doctrine) to this game
Instantly, the similarity with XCOM WOTC on the strategic level is uncanny: 3 factions, region bonuses, classes (and an ability that grants 'carry more gear'), the enemy progressing ("Commander, Advent is moving on its Avatar project."), choosing missions over others that might expire, tasks with costs, reprisals... In a phrase, that's XCOM, baby! :) Adequately adapted to a WWII setting?
You know, it is quite amazing that you haven't reviewed XCOM 2 yet. And now, of course, it would not be an easy task either. I mean, how are you going to comment on XCOM's similarity to.... XCOM? Nor would it be fair to compare it backwards to XCOM-inspired games. A veritable conundrum.
Oh, as I progress through the review. Is the use of morale unique? WotC has this implemented as well...
P.S. Having said all this, I still think this an interesting game. And the similarity to XCOM is not necessarily a downside. We do love XCOM for a reason. ;)
Good show sir
This is one of those borderline purchase games for me. Some things I like about it. Some egh. What I worry most about it though is starting a game then wanting to play x-com 2 instead. I guess if it's cheap enough I will give it a try.
Reminds me a bit of "Silent Storm" (which was fun until I met PanzerKleins - which were pretty annoying to deal with).
This game seems promising!
I’ve been holding off on buying it until I saw your review! Thank you for being so informative! I could have missed it, but did you say how long the game is for a run through?
For me it was about 13 hours
Only have so much to spend on video games so I'll wait on the Zoria review to then determine which game I buy.
Or you could wait for Project Raven to v come out if you're patient.
I hope is good because i bought it😊
Games like xcom are my favorite types of games but when they make the game more stealth focused, it ruins the game for me 😔. Great review, bro!

Bought this last weekend but ive only played thru a couple missions. I do like it but you definitely can tell the team had a small budget.
❤
xcom and terror from the deep had the morale system as well, I think I'm going to buy this after watching review 😁
I mean, this is hitting the Silent Storm vibes that I've been missing for over a decade
Comes to $70 in Canada. Otherwise I would definitely buy it
"I'm reaching that age when a man gets into WW2"
I thought the new meta was thinking about ancient Rome every day ? 😁
I wish this style of game stopped trying to jam in a half-baked stealth or nonlethal system. Put that dev time into making the actual combat better. JA3 and Xcom 2 did reasonably well with it, but clearly had a far bigger budget than most. Meanwhile, this title, Last Train, and that other dorky ww2-ish pulp one that flopped all have an underbaked stealth system that boils down to “remove a couple minor enemies but don’t expect to avoid any of the setpiece encounters.”
is it better then jagged alience
Not to be argumentative and I have yet to play the game but some missions being simple and others hard feels right to me. The pace and balance seem good to me? Mixing it up should subconsciously help but I need to play it.
This reminded me of Silent Storm, which I was surprised to see you haven't reviewed!
Or am I missing something? Either way, I think it would be right up your alley, although the sequel, Silent Storm: Sentinels, is probably a better overall game.
Curious if you will do War Mongrels at any point? It has been patched and fixed.
No current plans, I have a lot to do already
@@MortismalGaming fair enough. Figure i ask anyway
Game needs mod support - bummed developers are not supporting that
I hope they come out with a DLC so i can play as the Germans.
The game reportedly has 17 different endings.
A silent storm clone??
the game is too hard for me even on regular difficulty 😢
I don't see reply being much fun, if the missions occur in the same order with identical enemy placement.
"Silent storm" is say....
...A WW2 tactics & strategy game where your characters CANNOT die, is... a very strange design choice.
Still sounds cool, but... wow, that one aspect of the game made me pause.
another game bites the dust lmao
Gronk!
I couldn't play XCOM 2 after finding the exploit to skip enemy turns. Is this game tight?
I played the demo ans the faults you mentioned were so apparent i completely lost inrerest in this.
I really dont see how you can recommend it. It felt like a 15 euro game
I can understand why they didn't go with the IRL factions, but it is something of a shame that they've seemingly airbrushed out the role of Communist Resistance networks.
Communists defeating the nazis is like a dirty secret nowadays, even so they did most of the job...
Seems the French aren’t fond of reinforcing the narrative that their Resistance only really kicked off with the invasion of the USSR leading to French socialists getting involved in the Resistance.
[COMMENT REDACTED]
Broken morale? Report to the Commissaur!
game timer = pass. i modded xcom 2 to turn off the avatar project , that was annoying enough.
100% in 26 hours? Not much of the content for the turnbased strategy game.
How hard is Elite ? Can it be frustrating ? as Im planning to get the 100%
