One thing that is possible is they are attempting to save too much. Like maxing out both their 401k and IRA (that's like 30k) a year. It makes your 110k go down to 80k and then all of a sudden you're taking on debt to make a good life for your family. Retirement is smart to plan for but not if your entire life up until that time is a struggle.

Even if you bought your home pre pandemic the damn mortgages go up like a surprise every year and because home prices are up, property taxes are sky high. Plus groceries take all your money. If you have kids, forget about it. They always got random expenses popping up. I got 3 different medical bills sitting on my table right now ( each $500-900) cuz my lil one always sick. To your specific point, I just did a zillow search for homes in Augusta, GA (a regular, not huge but not tiny Georgia city) and you can get a nice house in a nice neighborhood in the 180k-220k range. But in general, it is pretty well known that houses in the south, especially in suburbs, are much cheaper than houses on the west coast. This isn't news.

Both mine and my husband's income brings us to just at 6 figures. This blows my mind because we don't live lavishly we have to budget to afford food/bills but we live relatively comfortably. To your specific point, I just did a zillow search for homes in Augusta, GA (a regular, not huge but not tiny Georgia city) and you can get a nice house in a nice neighborhood in the 180k-220k range. Somewhere crazy expensive like Atlanta or Nashville might be the exception. But in general, it is pretty well known that houses in the south, especially in suburbs, are much cheaper than houses on the west coast. This isn't news.
