FYI, Jona is more popular in the Philippines because of her beautiful songs, not in live shows. I mean, Talking about ALBUM sales, morissette and Katrina are nothing! But i love them all. Only that jona is my favorite.
I beg to disagree, I agree that Jona really is an incredible singer, but she's also the only singer here in the Philippines who sings not to impress, but with clarity and soul. You might just looking on the technicality, but it's so perfect. Other singers are really risking it all but we can't feel the message and the emotion. They were just mere exagerations.

I totally agree to your reaction and love it so much. For me,Jona has the cleanest & the most angelic voice among other singers in her generation here in the philippines. Her low & high notes, runs & riffs, pitch are well controlled but she lacks that "swagger" thing to get out of her comfort zone and sing a song as if it is her own by putting something into it. Sorry, but I have to disagree with what you said that because she has somewhat a 'generic' voice that's why she fits for a Disney production or musical. First of all, she doesn't have a 'generic' voice and second, musicals in general do not look for or require 'generic voices'. Jona isn't a copy cat of any singer. Not a Regine-wannabe, a trying hard Mariah etc. It just all comes naturally from her and for me, that is 'versatility'. I have to say that because you haven't reacted to her performances so much that you are missing a lot from her. She has one of the unique voices here in the Philippines. It's like when I hear her tracks from the radio, I can definitely say that it is her, "That's Jona!". You have been so into other Filipino singers that you have developed even your own biases. I suggest you try to listen without prejudice.

True about Filipinos not being artistic. This isn't to take away from their (our) talents, but we didn't grow up actively trying to make an identity. In fact, I don't know if you know this, but we grow up through trying to imitate others. The measure of your greatness is if you can belt like Whitney, whistle like Mariah, sustain notes like Celine, perform like Beyonce, etc etc. It's not about YOU, but it's about whether you can copy someone else. It's only on the latter part of the singer's careers do they consider exploring their own sounds i.e. Sarah, although imo, she's still struggling with her identity.

Singing is not about throwing high notes. 1. She performed in WCOPA and won. 2. She's not GENERIC. 3. She's technical in terms of singing. 4. She's not singing to impress people but to narrate story 'A great story teller'. 5. She's not even trying to mimic anyone in terms of her musicality. 6. She's a singer with emotions. Try to browse more videos and sincerely listens the way she throw proper breathing, notes and proper enunciation of words. Reflect to your judgment and come to understand how proper singing is done. Come and visit our country and let her sing all the songs sung by your favorite divas. Let's see if you can still say it's GENERIC. Try to develop your unbiased judgment. Happy face now.
JONA is an expressive singer, not an impressive one.
Think you're missing a lot from Jona... Apart from being a world champion, way back in 2006, she is educated well on the field she is in. She's been to conservatory of music. I just see that you're up to changing the original thing into her own thing. Nothing beats the original, for me. The Greatest Showman is not a 90's thing. Jona may somehow think that the song is still too hot to make so much revisions in it. Meaning, she's paying too much RESPECT to the composer and to the song itself. I won't say that you're biased or whatever. Maybe because of cultural difference.
Lastly, Jona is a singer who outpours her heart as she sings. Again, not just a singer, JONA sings to express what's in a piece. Comparing her to other Filipina singers doesn't make "Filipina singer better than a Filipina singer" have a sense at all.
Listen without prejudice. Anyway, I respect your opinion. More power, tho.

Eduardo Bautista Jr. they happen to react to this particular performance. They’re not sayng that Jona isn’t good, they’ve stated many times that she’s a good singer. But they actually obviously toned down their criticism of this particular performance just to curry the favor of their followers but very clearly they weren’t as impressed as Jona’s die hard followers. I also like KZ a lot but there have also been several times when her performances just sound uninspired. It happens to every one.

I think I agree with their comments about it, I think what they want to tell us is that Jona's voice is suitable more or generic on disneys songs because of the clarity of voice that she has. Not generic to be so common, I believe that Jona's singing voice is so much unique. Maybe they have not just expounded more of it (MGN fyi in the philippines, the most common voice would be more like morissette amon and katrina velarde singing voice) but I think theres nothing wrong with it.
I also love that they comment about Jona should give or put little more artistry on the song that she covers. For me they give a genuine reaction .

1) If you want to call someone’s voice generic, be clear and have assertions to back it up. Listen to Filipino radio and Jona’s register and tone will automatically make the listener identify her voice. Maybe what you want to say is that her voice is radio-ready. It’s pleasant to the ears to sing along with because there are no unnecessary runs and riffs and ad libs. Which I must stress, should be done sparingly.
2) Texture. You might want to read about texture before letting this ship sail cause you are so misinformed on this one.
3) I raise serious red flag on your taste if you think Katrina has better technical quality than this little diva. Dude, no. Ever. Listen to them sing.
Katrina’s “This is me” sounded like chipmunks in the bridge of the song😆 I don’t know why baka siguro mataas ang key or may ginagaya syang singer. Yes she has the power of her voice , But for me Jona’s voice is more pleasant and more expressive than Kat.

While Jona, has a real distinct voice, with "perfect" ear for music. One of the most gifted and incredible vocalists ever discovered. Water is clear, so as Jona's voice. From very low, to mid range, to upper belts, she just brings the house down... She does not need to prove anymore that she is a very technical singer, because with her status now, everybody here in the Philippines knows how technical she is. Because she is, Technical, better than the other artists that you react to.

great pointers guys. unfortunately yes, mostly in the philippines are only singers not artist. its is also because of how our mainstream media supports someone, that they need to copy or someway need to be sounded like a westerner singer to sell a record. they would reason out that its being purest and honest to a song but its pretty sad and BS here in philippines :( however, we do have our underground music industry though :) you'll be able to see real artist there :)
