I think the beauty is that the orcas swam with the swimmer, the swimmer didn't go to swim with the orcas.

that's what orcas do. when their in their actual habitat (the wild, gee what a shock) they're more docile and humble than a house pet. Not only that but there's tons of reports of dolphins and orcas actually putting themselves between divers and sharks. their smart enough to know that we don't want to kill them and we don't look like their food, so by default we are friends. they are incredibly smart creatures.

There is an interview floating out there of this lady. I think she said at first she was worried about being mistaken for a seal but she just kept trucking along. She could see them before they cut her off but just kept going.
That woman must've been over the moon when she found out someone got a video of that encounter. Without that, it's truly one of those situations that you could never adequately explain to someone and they probably wouldn't believe you anyway. Amazing foitage.

Yeah, the fact the Orcas are there... You'll not find any threat to the swimmer unless the swimmer encounters a rip current.

Thats the most amazing interaction… we do morning swims in the Mediterranean sea here with my mom for about 1 km, we have had interactions with sea turtles, one even swam a few minutes right between us ❤ We also saw some sting rays but they just hid under the sand. I truly love the sea and immensely respect and appreciate it. If you can’t meditate just go for a swim in the sea, system fully restored 😊
Those turtles are smart . . . they lure predators up to the humans so they can get away. Lucky for Med swimmers there are only some big great whites around Greece and Sicily and they do not eat the turtles generally.
@@jritechnology The ones we swim with have a whole community, boats with tourists visit them daily. Luckily no sharks here of any kind thus far *keeps fingers crossed* 😅

Underwater videographers experience the same things, they swim with sharks, killers whales, lots of sea predators and they do not get harmed. It is an awesome thing to see! Great video guys 😊
they gotta redirect sharks but definitely not something i would do. i would swim with orcas though because no shark wants to get their livers eaten by an orca in the vicinity of a diver
I would definitely not swim with sharks, recently saw a video and heard that the shark ate the young man legs, arms and head, it happened so fast no one could do anything. Sure there are smaller sharks less dangerous.
Have you seen the video of the baby orcas asking humans to help their mom that was caught in a net??? Those Shamus are smart as hell

I think that video is so beautiful; I’m so glad that the swimmer didn’t start touching and trying to ride the orca- seriously- some ppl treat them as if they are their own toy! These are wild; let them investigate, leave them alone & enjoy the beauty of them in their own environment.
She would have been in serious trouble if she did.
This video is just incredible...to see such giant, powerful, beautiful creatures interacting with that person so gently and curiously...animals like that make this world an amazing place ❤
I’m an American and used to live in New Zealand. This beach was about 3 hours drive from my house. We went there many times looking for orcas but never found them. There are several local pods, but you never know where they’re going to show up. Hahei(pronounced ha hay) is where you’ll find the beautiful Cathedral Cove as well, so even if you don’t find orcas the coast is stunning. We moved to Melbourne, Australia and enjoy the diving in and around Port Phillip Bay. My wife and I really enjoy your videos!
Humbling and amazing to have that experience -- absolutely! True, Orcas are naturally intelligent and curious but if we were on their menu, game over, obviously.
I wonder if the swimmer was interviewed about the experience...

I have been in the sea swimming with a orcas near me one time. Almost like this video but really close to the land. (It is a place where it gets like 5+ meters directly to land. And They are just playful. Comming up, looking at me, splash some water, looking again, swimming under me and does some corkscrews and slowly swimming away. And it is so beautiful to know that im the safest person in the world rights there. Im sure if i would be drowning, it would splash me up on land.. Most friendly and beautiful sea creatures in the ocean❤️
I would feel more safe with dolphins now that orcas have been attacking boats, which I don't blame them as we have been stealing their babies for decades
I had a similar experience when I was 17 with two false killer whales off the coast of Sanibel Island, Florida. It wasn’t any fun though - my dad noticed before I did, and didn’t know it was a whale, so he screamed “shark”. I panicked and beelined for the shore, disregarding every word of advice I’d ever read, exerting myself harder than I ever had in my life. He’d been pointing right at me, so I fully expected to feel teeth around my leg. Only when I got to shore did I look and realize there were 2 creatures, all black and 16ish feet long, which could only be one species. In retrospect I wish I’d seen and known in time what was really happening. Even if it was a shark, the smart thing to do would have been to turn towards it and calmly swim away without splashing. We grabbed a spotlight from the house (as the sun set not long after) and followed the whales down the beach until they swam off. It’s incredible to me that two creatures roughly the size and weight of a rhino snuck up a hand’s breadth from me in water I could almost stand up in, and only after watching this video did I realize that they probably approached me intentionally out of curiosity. I wish I’d had a cooler head like this guy, the experience could have been so much more amazing.

Orca in New Zealand specialize in catching and eating Stingray. There are many human interactions with them.
If you guys come to New Zealand you should set up a meet and greet. It will be awsume to catch up with you guys.
We are truely spoiled here in NZ with our sea life we get to experience. We get to see most of it here.

There are videos of both the swimmer and the drone operator. The woman who was swimming had an interaction with the orcas before the recording with the drone. She was surprised and initially freaked out and swam back to the shore. She then got back in and started to swim again, at which point the video with the drone began. So she had already interacted with the orcas before the video started.
Also, something you can notice is the dead ray inside the mouth of the juvenile orca.
There was a killer whale called “Old Tom” back in the day who used to herd baleen whales into the harbor in NSW so that the whalers could harvest them. He helped 3 generations of one whaling family over there. The thing about killer whales is that they’re giant carnivores who are also emotional and actually enjoying killing and toying with prey, so it would be hard for me to ever fully trust one. They could easily end you even by accident due to their size. But humans aren’t really their type of prey-not fatty enough. Their brains are big like ours and require vast amounts of animal fat to be healthy, and lean protein just isn’t preferred by apex predators with large brains. I’d imagine they could suffer rabbit starvation like humans can due to eating meat that’s too lean.
Very smart mammals ❤ will never harm anyone unless you harm them. My hunting grandfather once spoke to these and they answered and delivered for my family a long time ago❤❤❤❤
My son and his girlfriend moved to NZ for 1 yr on a holiday visa. They are living the life. Living in a caravan, hiking, beaches, working a bit. They will be heading to the South Island of NZ to hit the mountains in a few months. While our weather warms theirs gets colder. It’s so neat.
They are so playful and friendly, when free. So wonderful. RIP Tilikum.

I've completed an introductory scuba course on the Gold Coast of Australia in 2016 and don't plan to scuba dive again, at least for now. However, I really love this channel. It must be the combination of Gus and Woody that makes it soothing to listen to and takes me away from all the other rubbish you find on the internet.

They are so so careful, one wrong swipe of a tail and they could brake bones. The swimmer wasn't hardly moved of track even. They have to consciously hold back for that.

I would consider this a gift. I love orcas and to have one decide to swim up to say hi and just chill... I would be speechless.
Hell yah! I live in Vancouver BC and we have local pods and transient pods and one of the transient moms died and left a baby lost in a sheltered cove and a rescue was launched to guide the baby back to the pod. After multiple attempts they succeeded, they were in no rush as the baby was feeding well and in good health and they didn’t want to scare it so the approach was gentle and not rushed. I also believe the local indigenous people watched over the baby day and night to make sure it came to no harm. Watching them from the shore or a boat is so amazing but to be in the water and they come to check you out, wow! 🥰
Carol and I swam with orcas in Norway November of 2022 as a birthday present to her. I would HIGHLY recommend it!!!

How amazing, looks like it was a mother and her older and younger calf, it was like she was teaching them look a human, so curious and intelligent, they knew it was not supposed to be food.
We have orcas here in Portugal and sometimes they attack the boats rudder. Theory is that some orca was injured by it and now they attack when they see it. They told people to turn off motors if they see orcas and they go away. We dive there very frequently and they never attack a diver.
It looked like that guy went swimming with the Orcas everyday the way they acted around him. That would be awesome to do! It's crazy how close they are to the shoreline. Great video.
4:33 is one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever seen between a human and nature the mother and young orcas just swimming with the human looking at each other, amazing footage!

Many years ago a friend and I spotted a Southern Right whale and calf off the coast here in Torquay, Australia. We went out on our surf mats and had an amazing experience interacting with mum and baby. I'd swim with orcas in a heartbeat!
Remember that south of the equator has their seasons opposite to ours in the states. So December would be the beginning of their summer.
I’m nothing more than an armchair orca enthusiast/expert (not a real one at all) but from what I have learned, he is completely safe from any other predator. Those big white sharks that hang out at the Farallon Islands have swam as far from there to Hawaii to escape them. That’s like 2,500 miles! Thanks for doing this and explaining that they are no danger to us!

In Spain the orcas usually attack sail boats, breaking their rudder and even sink a boat in Gibraltar

I noticed something about that Shark VDO you linked at the end. In 1 year, Gus must have lost like 1/3 of his weight. Look at his face back then. The dude is preparing for some tight cave, I'm sure.
The swimmer had nothing to fear from sharks that day.
Watching this was truly amazing. Those Orcas are incredibly beautiful, and the swimmer's timing was perfect.

Hey guys. So I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and we have quite a large orca population here. I am an open circuit and obviously cold water dry suit diver. It is very common to have close encounters with sea lions, or sea puppies as we call them, because they’re quite cute, curious and love to play. Orca close encounters do happen, but are kept very quiet inside the Diving community as we don’t want them to be disturbed anymore than they already are by the whale watching industry. Scenario is the same as with the sea puppies, curiosity, and play. The only annoying part is the tooth marks in our fins, otherwise always an amazing experience.
Orcas are fascinating animals. In Washington we have our resident killer whales who stay in the sound and only hunt fish. Maybe the occasional harbor seal and it is amazing to see how people will come together to watch these animals whenever a pod is spotted. Vastly misunderstood to like sharks and I believe they were victims of whale hunting as well. Maybe not to near extinction like other species but we’re still hunted.
Could y’all possibly ever do an episode on the risks and precautions to take as a diver with asthma? I am extremely interested in diving yet this is an overlooming fear as I do suffer from mild to moderate asthma. You guys are awesome!!

I live in Auckland, about ten years ago when i was 16. I was swimming at Waiake Beach in torbay, there was a floating pontoon thing out there, one day a pair of orcas came and swam around the people, blowing water around and just looking at us. Surreal experience I'll never forget, didn't get in the water with them but im sure they know how to get animals off floating things if they want lol. Some people were in the water with them
I wonder if Dad there was concerned if the human was in trouble
7:13 fun fact I forget where but there’s a species of dolphins that can swim with local killers whales. This was fascinating to local scientists and they found out it was learned behavior when another pod of transient killer whales where in the area. The locals only eat seals and other fish they don’t eat the dolphins where the transient pod does. So they help the local pod out by flushing seals towards them and in return they get protection from the transient pod. It’s crazy smart these animals are.

8:28 Was just going to say this, Woody. Yes, in Norway (Tromso - 217 miles inside the Arctic Circle so it's cold, ruddy cold) you can snorkel with orcas. Have watched people doing this & it's the most awesome experience of their lives surrounded by dozens of them. It costs but hey... Grab a Go-Pro and go, guys. I would dearly love to but one concern is the slippery ice on the boat - I'd be a fractured hip waiting to happen. Lol.

I was in Norway, Andfjorden, Krotoja, swimming with orcas, and the most scary thing is jump into the water, because it is so cold!
We have been a hole day on the boat in winter. A speedboat. Just me and my girlfriend... and belive me, the Sauna afterwards was like heaven 😂
I was on a dive off the West coast of Canada and had a pod go by just out of sight in poor visibility unfortunately. Spent awhile listening to the whistles but only got one glimpse of white through the green water.

Actually there IS one account of an orca attacking people besides the incidents in the Mediterranean.
The survivors of the Essex( the whaling ship that was attacked by a whale and was the basis of Moby Dick) has an interesting incident where after the sinking and the 3 remaining lifeboats became separated , the lifeboat with Captain Pollard was attacked and nearly sunk by a killer whale. Even in 1820, orca attacks were unheard of and his account was deemed by some as a lie to offset the circumstances of losing his ship and crew as a case of astonishingly bad luck.

supposedly he said afterwards that he had to keep calm and just swim straight and hope they got bored with him. He said he didn't swim to shore because he thought they might pull him back in.
I was once swimming in a sea, near a beach. The waves were ok, but a storm was approaching, and so was evening, so there were almost no other people nearby. Also, that area had no major sea predators. It was known to have dolphins, though, and I once partook in a boat voyage where they took us into an open sea and let us swim around where the dolphins were known to be (I saw them, but from the boat, not while swimming). That was fun.
Anyway, the beach is mostly empty, the sun is about to set, and I'm enjoying swimming around in the soft (but increasing) waves. Then I suddenly heard a clear, unusual sound: it was a dolphin somewhere nearby. Gotta tell you: I DARTED out of the water immediately and returned to my hotel. T'was really, really scary, like that: with extremely few people around, sun setting and storm about to hit.
They are water creatures, I'm not; they decide to play and get carried away a notch, and I'm gonna end up a floater on some beach several hundred kilometers away, scaring the hell outta tourists until the cops catch the carcass and put it in a neat black bag.
It was a woman swimmer and these orca hunt rays so they come to the shallows quite often. This video is just magical. I work at a zoo and say all the time that I love the animals but what I want is for them to love ME!
I have done the swimming with orca in Norway and it is amazing but nothing as special and interactive as this. Still if you have opportunity, do it!!
