    Well...I just got my first dirt bike since I was 14. I am 39 now. Lmao!!! Still a kid at heart. I just love this video. Straight easy to watch. I love how you listed the required torque specs. I used that the most. Left it on pause...did my thing...and then torqued it all down. Thanks.

    I bought my 2003 in July 2002 and change my oil every 2-4 rides. I just popped by here being too lazy to find out roughly how much oil it took...being the first ride of the year coming up.
    I have never heard about that screen at the bottom and mine has a bash guard in front of it,..so never even noticed it before. It all came apart as you showed and mine was about as dirty
    as yours,...so I guess frequent oil changes has helped that. Thanks so much for posting this,....learned something about my bike after almost 15 years of owning it. LOL

    Good video, thanks. A few notes... the frame screen does not need to be cleaned very often, mainly after a new clutch or internal engine parts are installed or periodically every year or two. Also the oil filter cover has an O-ring which needs to be replaced periodically, some filters will come with a new O-ring. The oil filter cover bolts are torqued to 8-10 lb-ft if I recall. Finally, if I dump 2 quarts into my XR400 it will overflow out the fill hole. (Ask me how I know.) So I add about 1.5 quarts and run it for 5-10 seconds and then add the remaining 0.5 quart of oil, run it again and check the level. I suppose I could kick the engine over about 30 times to make room for the rest of the oil, I've never tried that. Thanks again, you know this bike well and you do good work.

    Thanks for your response. After doing some research I'm pretty sure it's the stator wiring grommet. There is supposed to be a small rubber grommet where the stator wires feed into the left side of the engine. The previous owner globed silicone around it but now it's leaking allot of oil. I have no idea where to find one of those rubber grommets. You probably have to buy a whole new stator & wiring harness. That would suck lol.

    Dear, when you place the oil filter, it is preferable that you place the filter on the cover and then insert both things into the housing (to prevent it from coming in crooked, out of its housing). hug

    Estimado, cuando colocás el filtro de aceite, es preferible que coloques el filtro en la tapa para, luego, introducir ambas cosas en el alojamiento (para evitar que entre torcido, fuera de su alojamiento). Abrazo

    Great video. I changed my oil, let the bike get hot then checked the dipstick. It read barely on the low end. I put almost 2 quarts in. Any idea why the dipstick reads so low? I'm on a flat surface

    • @MotherlodeMotors
      @MotherlodeMotors  9 років тому +1

      Make sure you hold the bike level, off of the kickstand. I forgot to note that in the video. The oil pump is on the right side of the motor and it is what regulates the amount of oil in the sump, when the bike is leaning over the oil pump is higher which results in a larger amount of oil being in the sump. If you hold the bike level there will be less in the sump and your dipstick reading should be higher.

  • @PawlikowskiRobert

    Hey, just to confirm, the top end and the crankcase share the same engine oil? You drained the oil in the frames down-tube as well as the crankcase but only added 2 quarts back into the top of the frame. This will refill the down-tube as well as the crankcase? Thanks!

    • @MotherlodeMotors
      @MotherlodeMotors  4 роки тому

      Robert Pawlikowski Yes, transmission and engine share the same oil, and the downtube is just an oil tank to hold extra capacity for them.

    • @MotherlodeMotors

      Doesn’t really matter as long as it’s slippery. It’s just preference. If you don’t have a preference then go with the cheaper option.

      10w-40 or 20w-50 if you live in a hotter climate. Always use motorcycle specific oil because it has additives for the wet clutch.
