I was in Afghanistan in 2007-2008 and I still remember the bazaars and especially the flatbread. I made friends with a man called Azziz outside of Khowst and that man was an excellent cook! I was blessed to be able to have flat bread and chai at least once a month with that man. I also traded him for some old Pakistani Rupees that I still have stored away.

This just goes to vividly illustrate how the Earth naturally changes over time. This area once supported enough agriculture to feed cities of thousands of people, and generated enough manpower and wealth to defy the Seleucids and maintain its independence, albeit under the rule of ethnic Macedonians or Greeks. It's a shame that Afghanistan has been torn by war for so long.
Being that it is the meeting place between west and east… it is the centre of all things.
Why do you think these videos don't talk about Indo-Greek in Afganistan?
Well traditional farming, overuse of underground water resources, global warming, and more importantly, war and not having time to build infrastructure is the reason northern Afghanistan is turned dry. We haven't been using Oxus waters, neither the inland Hari.
Afghanistan has been part of the Indian and Persian civilization. It has been a prosperous area.

One method you could use to find it is to follow the routes taken by Chinese merchants. There are several accounts of this city in recorded Chinese history. One only needs to follow the routes taken by the merchants and ambassadors in these accounts. Many of the ancient cities and way points have been lost but many still remain and the ancient roads are still visible.
Michael Wood does this in his documentary In Search of the Trojan War, following routes recorded by the Hittites.
Hittite history is based on misleading Bible. There was no such civilization. It was all Persian history stolen and claimed over by the west especially German tribes.

To paraphrase Churchill’s iteration about Russia...Afghanistan too is an enigma inside a riddle, wrapped in mystery. Those trying to handle this oldest and largest tribal society without the full backing of anthropology, sociology and contemporary politics - with a premium on inter and intra-tribal politics - do so at great peril. The fifty plus Coalition of the most powerful nations on earth, led by the sole superpower, found this truism in losses and embarrassment, after twenty years of dogged futility.
Well....not interested in modern Afghanistan anymore - the self-destructive backwards Taliban Society is keeping its people poor, hungry and with no vision for the future.

It's nowhere else on the internet because it's a highly dubious theory. Just look at the documentary, there really is no evidence, just speculation about the location of ancient Bactria.

Alexander defeated Porrus in Hydaspis river battle. His successors created the famous Indo-Greek kingdom which lasted till the 10AD and ruled vast areas of India reached as far as Pataliputra city.

*Pataliputra city is located in the north east part of India, not far from the borders with Bangladesh.
So the Greeks stayed in India till 10AD and they also extended their Hellenistic kingdoms so far as Pataliputra which is very close to Bangladesh!

The Greek foothold in the Indian Subcontinent is limited and that includes later Greeks of the Magadh Era.
Indian records are silent on Alexander and that probably means his attempt at entering India was insignificant. It is only in the colonial era that the story of Alexander " the great" was thrust down the throat of Asians.

Yes i have travelled this rout from peshawar in pakistan to Venezia. it was 1977. in novembre. it took me 25 days.when i arrived in Venezia. i lost my 15 kg weight. On the way.i meet many hippies from every where. To day there are many tourist from europe to india.but they don't follow the road to Afghanistan. They enter from to pakistan..

I do enjoy Odyssey's documentaries, they are informative and interesting, however if no filming was permitted why was there no safety precautions taken to obsure or blackout the guards faces as well as the drivers in the beginning as if they are seen in this documentary thier lives may be in danger.

What's the spelling of this legendary city (in English)? I'm reasonably well acquainted with ancient histoiry but do not recognize the name (Bactria was the name of the entire region of Hindukush and parts of modern-day Uzbekistan and Pakistan, and googling on "Bathrah", "Bethra" etc turned up nothing.
Balkh, there is a Wikipedia article on it.
There was a Persian city in Civilization III called Bactra, perhaps its that.

Undoubtedly Alexander was a great warrior, commander and an intellectual, however, he never succeeded in entering India as it is now. He fought the mighty Aryan Kshatriya (Rajput) Porus in the area of Jhelum in what is Pakistan today. The truth is no one knows genuinely who lost or won, however, it is known without any doubt that Alexander decided to move back to his home after this battle. Interestingly history records without any doubt that both Porus and Alexander survived this great battle. The Aryan tribes living in India have a well documented existence in the subcontinent much before the period of Alexander as well.
Even barber hoard of Muslims were able to conquer India and loot and plunder it thousand times but Alexander couldn't. India was never famous for its war capabilities but for grandiose. Otherwise we should have stopped the invasion by the Muslims which we certainly failed and it destroyed our culture and identity. We were lazy people and never ready to fight for our country or lands bcz we're land of rich and plenty which was also the cause of our demise.
Even if Alexander lost the war, the Greek historians would never admit it since he had conquered so much at such an young age. Also, the historical event is narrated from their side, so, a healthy dose of doubt is necessary.

False, it’s widely known Alexander won…… even victory coins of hydaspes are still being found in the the region.
Alexander also went on to fight even more after hydaspes, in the Malian campaign.
They had to turn back because his army mutinied, his men saw no point in going further, considering Alexander already told them they’d be going home even after capturing Bessus.
Saying " no one know who won" is wrong, the battle is incredibly recorded on how it played out……

You’re wrong, Buddhism was an imported religion like Islam, and people in some parts of the geography practiced it, not the whole area. The native religion of the geography was Zoroastrianism. In fact, the birthplace of the religion was in Bactra which is today’s Balkh, northern Afghanistan. Anthropologically over 80% of the people are Iranic so it’s obvious that everything linked to them, is of Iranic origin - whether it’s culture language, religion, or race. Even after they became Muslims, there are many Zoroastrian elements in their culture, that have been kept and disguised as Islamic practices.

As a history buff, I wonder how much human history will change if Afghanistan is excavated and researched. So many civilizations, empires, and human development are hidden there. Plus, these people have been selling their own history on the black market.
