The Great Bridgewater Canal New Year Breach of 2025

- I went to film the destruction caused by the epic storm of New Year 2025 in the North West of England and the UK.
The Storm caused the failure of the Bridgewater Canal stranding the unfortunate canal boat residents in place for God knows how long !
The last time this happened was in 1971.
There are no locks on the Bridgewater Canal, so boards have been added in pre-existing slots to stop the whole canal completely empty. These are still leaking, but I imagine they will be dammed up until the canal is fixed.
This is an ecological disaster for the area caused by the storm, a canal that was built in the 1700s. There is controversy about whether the lack of maintenance has lead to this, but I am no expert.
This is basically some raw footage from my drone.
I hope the people on the canal boats are going to be ok, and can possibly repaint and repair their canal boats in the mean time - taking advantage of the situation.
amazing footage! I was not aware of the damage till I see this😢
Thanks - I’ll go back after the snow
Considering I had only 59 subscribers - getting over 5000 views feels quite exciting for posting essentially raw footage :) thanks for watching, I’ll have to think of a 100 subscriber special 😂
Impressive video and beautiful colors despite the catastrophe
Climate is definitely going mad around the World.
Cheers - I wil go back during daylight :) The colours will be more muted then but the detail might be higher. Thanks for watching.
This is utter devestation. Amazing vid- love the music.
Thanks - I'll try and go back when the sun is higher in the sky, possibly after some snow, or early to catch the mist.
When I cycled along here in the summer, it was so lumpy along the tow path that I nearly went in. I've been in before - where it's about 3 foot / 1 metre deep at Broadheath.
I went over my handlebars on that stretch of the canal about five years ago now but it was closer to Ye Olde No.3. That bike was one size too large for me so it wasn't that stable anyway.
@@IIJOSEPHXIII hope you’ve recovered. Maybe someone saw and wet them self laughing ?
It’d be cool to see some side-by-side footage of how it was and how it is now (if you have enough of the older footage).
I will try to ee if I have some - you should see a link at the end of this video to a video from Summer 2023 in roughly the same area, but past the bridge. You do see a short moment of the canal. I did film where the slip occured once in the winter when the canal was frozen, and managed to bounce the drone off the ice. The ground detection on the drone was fooled by the ice. It's a good job it was thickly frozen. ( I'm looking through my sd cards for footage ). I have also just made a quick video of the day after Storm Darragh, which I managed to get some stills of. Thanks for watching and commenting ;)
The shuttering in the footage is from a previous collapse on the section in the seventies ,that was
Blamed on rabbits undermining the bank for decades ,the canal was shut then for years ,I can see the same happening again , this section is part of the peel ports empire not the canal and rivers trust ,good luck with getting peel ports to fix this ,,have you seen the state of the Manchester ship canal .
I've only expored a bit of the Manchester Ship Canal, I was going to do a freestyle FPV video around that closed bridge - but all my GoPros flew away or broke - ( aside >>
despite me having a John Lewis extended warranty - they refused to replace mine - I won't be ever buying from them again - I have purchased a lot from them. ).
Ive walked around the Warburton Toll bridge looking for a spot to fly, but felt stink face stares from angry land owners and the frustration from frisky horses.
Someone got a drone for Christmas
I’ve made over 15 fpv drones from components and got this one 4 years ago. I’ve flown over and under this canal a few times and once hit the ice 😂
How do u start to repair something like that ,,,who's going to do it and pay ,,😮good luck to em
Apparently Peel Holdings are going to do something about it - I have asked my train line engineer freind… He may comment on here.
It looks like an earthquake.
A UA-cam "Boat Tuber" who's boat is stuck there has been flying his drone up over this and has also been providing actual on the spot commentary and input from the perspective of someone living on a narrow boat about this. His is much less "dramatic and playing spooky music over dark videos" for 15 minutes. Rather than "OMG - look at this" perhaps you could comment about how the cause is a lack of funding and infrastructure works to maintain the British canal network, parts of which are now 300 years old and so need more than a quick lick and infill of dirt every few decades... That would actually be helpful.
Hello, he's got some great insight - he is also a professional UA-camr. I only have a 2013 Macbook Pro, but I can do great things - I'm no @MartinZero, or @TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat with my 60 subscribers.
I went at dusk and missed the light, I went a little too late.
I was going to go there on New Years Day, before I heard about the breach - that would have been a shocker for me. I went there after storm Darragh at 7am to get the sunrise - but forgot to put an SD card in the drone - I got some lovely photos though.
I will go and try to get some lovely snow scenes from around there as soon as it snows and lets up. I will try to get a consistent exposure, and link some good sequences together.
Thanks for your input and for watching my - essentially raw footage.
I would like to do UA-cam as a job. I once got 8 million views on something and was taken down ( in the very eary days ). That was fun, but UA-cam stopped me from entering a paid program for that. This was a long time ago, and was not quality content. ( Wayne Rooney's bicycle kick ).
Please go and see this guy's footage - he's directly affected and needs your love and support - he's also got some banging footage and insights.
@TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat ( I do not know him but hope he' ok and wish him well ).
I hope all you 'boaters?' are all ok @TaylorsAboardaNarrowboat and that it's fixed rapidly ( like it would be fixed if it happened in London ).
Holy shit! What has happened to the music?
"Eeeorye, zwock zwock TING"
I'm gone! 😮😱
I’m thinking you had a glitch ! It’s ok for everyone else ! Have a good one :)
@Taylors Aboard a Narrowboat footage?
Yes this video is just a copy of @Taylors Aboard a Narrowboat footage music included
No this is my footage and I chose the music here too ;)
I was here to film the day after Storm Daragh before the breach whenever that was, but I forgot my sd card for my drone.
I’ve got some nice pics though from the drone ( your phone will record the pics ).
I’ll upload those too. I was up at 7am to record after Darragh. I live local and have flown here a few times, cycled here, walked here, been to funerals around here, fed the ducks in Dunham park here, looked for mushrooms, photographed the deer, been shot at by farmers here, loved here, drank at The Swan with Two Nicks, eaten at Home (gone now), and been to its previous incarnation pub. I’m local. I look like electronic music.
See the drone flying under the bridge video here. I’ve flown fpv drones around here. I’ve fallen in the canal.
The other guy is not from around here, but I do recommend you checking his videos out, because he’s a pro UA-camr and he’s now a bit stuck.
So, no, not a copy ;)
I planned to come here New Year’s Day morning early, as mentioned. Before I knew about the breach. but I didn’t sleep until 5am due to a massive headache. So I would have been one of the first to cover it. ( but I would have been very lucky ).
Tubular footage.
Possibly down to decades of motorised boat traffic undermining the banking.
work for Peel Holdings do you?
wheres the FPV footage bro
Alright mate - I've not got many good batteries - I would like to power loop some bridges - I usually end up in the water or in a tree though :) Maybe I'll check some of my batteries - also my main good charger caught fire. I have an Ethix one though.
im gona say the water was seeping out from under the corrugated metal sides of the canal because it looks like the water went under the sides thus making them fall inwards. they really need to stop that water flowing beacuse its gona destroy a huge section in both directions. im amazed there nobody there..ie the canal n river trust. this could be the end of the canal if they dont stop that flow of water from both ends.
Portable dams should have been erected as close to each side of the breach as soon as possible....ideally within 24hrs of the breach, to reduce the scour damage to the canal bed. The longer it is left like this the greater the damage and the greater the cost/time to repair!!
Hi some huge boards were placed in under a bridge where there is a pre-existing slot for such an occurrence - they are leaky as hell, but were there prety quick, otherwise the whole canal would have drained out. I recon they will add some dirt or something - plastic ? to make it less leaky.
I think I saw a crane boat on New Years day near Dunham Town next to the little bridge there - I think that is where they put the boards in - I'll ride my bike down there and take a look.
It’s time for all canals to comeback to government run, otherwise they be lost forever, charity tries its best but it clearly isn’t working under this increase of climate change.
The government will be delighted that this canal is owned by a private company, and not the CRT.
@ Yes this maybe the case, but it doesn’t solve the issue of shareholders profits before heritage ruin, CEO sitting on 6 figures whilst twiddling their Thumbs doing SFA, except coming out of the office for a good photo shoot, I have written to Lisa Nandy asking what the her as minister and the government intentions are when certain contracts come to an end, we can no longer put profit and privatisation before heritage, it’s shameful.
