- Exploring Attack No.1, the first volleyball anime, the first female (and first shojo) sports anime, and the first shojo adaptation of a manga by a female mangaka. It's also one of the first sports anime series, and it's also among the first bunch of tv anime series to be made.

Just finished watching this series. It's actually quite good. Love how the storylines overlap each other in their last couple of episodes, rather than filler episodes having to fill in the in-between space.
Where can I watch it?
How many episodes are filler? And should I watch only the first half because of the robot plot later? Is that plot canon too?
Wow this anime could be a meme goldmine to a serious well written series. Such an intense anime.
Total intense !!
Awww! When I was little I used to live in Okinawa and really used to look forward to watching this.
Studio Trigger: I make the most over the top stories and animation
Attack no. 1: Hold my invisible ball.
70s shojo was manlier than most shonen today. Girls back in those days don't play for fun
Yeah, their determination and ambition was truely inspirational.
BEST. COMMENT. EVER!! And so damn true :D
Ah, murderous volleyballs.
@@alessiospurio What? No, it's great.
@@SecretIdentityStudio What's great?
I love your 80's shoujo anime reviews. I have a really soft spot for old anything
I just found your channel and completely fell in love with it.
Andá a saber.
And here I thought Umi no Toriton was old hat with the violence and maybe sexism in a kids show, but this one - well it is older than 1972 isn't it. Also using animated captain Kirk - I watched that show it was barely animated lol but the writing was actually good on occasion so to you I tip my hat, Marion Bea, you really know your retro cartoons. Would love some more frequent uploads tho.
This anime is now rebroadcast in germany in RTL2
Loved the narration you did here. I arrived here via interest in Chumei Watanabe's soundtrack work and wanted to learn a little more about the series he scored. Excellent summary and insightful. I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
Well well, Mistakes Were Made! More than a year later I realize I never counted Akane-chan (1968) which actually makes Attack No.1 the 5th shojo anime and the 2nd non magical girl shojo anime haha
But it's still the 1st volleyball anime way before Haikyuu!!
Hes going over that cliff AHHHHH
Watching Attack No. 1 actually caught me by surprise and has made me look for more older titles gonna start Aim for the Ace soon after I finish Rose of Versailles . Discotek please licence this series I will give you my money.
I love the Rose of Versailles and Attack no. 1♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
the tornado attack, the double attack...
Great analysis. Even though the anime is ridiculous sometimes (as you mentioned) I still absolutely love everything about it. If only there was sequel about Kozue playing in the Olympic team ... Would love to read the manga, too. Is there finally an English translation?
Do you like this series?
Thank you so much for this video! Ah, how I miss watching Attack No.1...
@@alessiospurio I watched it from 2018 to mid 2019. I really enjoyed it, but you have to be aware that this anime was made 51 years ago so some things might be different from today (not talking about the animation, but about the actions of the characters). Putting that aside, it's a great anime! ^^
@@alessiospurio I downloaded it from Oldcastle's fansub. Though you have to search it on Nyaa now because TMS took the direct links down. I hope this helps :)
Thank you so much. I can't believe I'd forgotten her first love-interest died!!! Shame on me lol
Just to elaborate on the Euro perspective: I'm German and basically grew up with this. I remember watching Heidi and some other stuff like that in Kindergarten, but Attack No.1 (aka Mila Superstar ^^) was my first anime series from primary school that I remember, and certainly the one with the most profound impact. It only aired here in 1993 (!!), coming by way of Italy, given a perfect program spot around noon time when German kids typically come home from school. There are comments on other youtube clips giving testimony to this daily routine: Get home from school, quickly chow down lunch, watch Mila :))
To measure the level impact: I drew countless pictures of abstracted persons (like stickfigures but fatter) playing volleyball, with emphasis on the ball movements just like in the series. Needless to say, not a single ball was ever round XD And of course I just wanted to play volleyball so bad myself. Practiced services and smashes all the time in our garden - with a light plastic ball cuz actual volleyballs were far too heavy and hurt your wrists lol... I even did a few "training sessions" on the schoolyard, throwing the ball at a queue of interested classmates coach no.1 style! But eventually nothing ever came of it, for real volleyballs not being fun and mostly cuz the only sports club in the neighbourhood didn't offer volleyball.
That sounds all too familiar, haha. We would have been best friends for sure. I disagree only on real Volleyball not being fun. I started playing it in primary school due to Mila, unfortunately as the only boy, but I joined the men's team in my area when I was 14 or so and I still love it to this day. ;) However, Volleyball would be even more exciting if there actually were techniques as shown in "Attack No. 1" ... e.g. Kugelblitzangriff, Luftballangriff, vergrößerter Schmetterball, Pendelannahme und natürlich der TORNADOANGRIFF! XD
Me: [skips spoilers for a 50 year old anime]
Also Me: But...it's 50 years old!
Me Again: I know...I know [skips anyway]
this one's better than some 2020 (anime) TV Shows even in twists
Anyway it’s a good anime to watch XD
@@alessiospurio really
my mom used to watch this show as a kid! she said she and the neighborhood kids would play pretend of this show❤️
The sounds the volleyballs make when hit at 9:56 .it really makes the murder mentors that much more hardcore.
Gokusen drama brought me here. Great video!
You deserve so many more subscribers
Thank you!!♥
wow, this shojo is very brutal
Haikyuu but make it shojo with the extra drama. I'm sold on this.
what a great review, brought up all childhood memories, thank you 👏🏼
I love Michiru Sanyo so much❤❤❤❤❤
Imagine knowing an anime because of a sticker on a guitar
lmao
Lol .
Same here. ✋
I need to watch this!
It's on Nyaa with English subs!
Greetings from Spain ♥️
@@alessiospurio No, no..
I suddenly need know where I can get a copy of a fifty year old anime!
Old Castle translated it, but I think TMS requested them to take down the links :( maybe it's still available somewhere
Edit: Wait, I found it! Here you go: nyaa.si/view/1156236

Saludos desde Chile, te has ganado nuevo suscriptor XD Lindo trabajo has hecho :D Muy apasionante.
Anination looks better than most 70s anime ive seen
Are you thinking of tackling Aim for the Ace as well?
yes, i plan to cover it next year!

Nice video
My childhood 😢😢❤❤
Now I need to hunt down this series!
This is a bit of a scummy question: where did you find the Anº1 OST and is youtube currently cool with using it?
i only use the opening song, which is on youtube (and couldn't use the ending). the song list is in the description
I found the ost here: www.solidfiles.com/v/DkdzpDy6RaDQB

I've been wanting to watch Attack No. 1 for a while now, but it's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to find an English sub/dub of the full episodes! Does anybody know where I can watch this anime about murderous floppy volleyballs? (No kidding though, I really want to see it.)

@@alessiospurio Nope. The episodes I was sent earlier were in Italian and they weren't all there, anyway. It's fine, I'm sure I'll track them down sometime. It's not like I have time to watch shows these days, anyway.
This is featured in the Witches of the Orient documentary I think?
