  • Dawa's journey began in June 2019 when his wife, Rinchen Pelmo, suffered a stroke at the age of 32. Despite the initial grim prognosis, Dawa took it upon himself to learn about strokes and sought guidance from Dr. Tashi Tenzin. He remained by Rinchen Pelmo's side throughout her recovery, even giving up his job to care for her.
With the help of free healthcare in Bhutan, Rinchen Pelmo accessed physiotherapy and gradually regained her independence, including the ability to walk. Though she still faced challenges in relearning various skills, her passion for farming, particularly mushroom cultivation and vegetable gardening, became a driving force in her recovery.
Reflecting on their experience, Dawa realized that more awareness about stroke could have helped them manage its risks, especially considering Rinchen Pelmo's high blood pressure. Determined to share their story and provide support for stroke patients and their families, Dawa established the Bhutan Stroke Foundation. This initiative was encouraged by Dr. Tashi Tenzin, who saw the importance of extending awareness and support beyond the hospital to the broader community.
In summary, Dawa's journey from his wife's stroke and recovery to the establishment of the Bhutan Stroke Foundation showcases the power of determination, love, and community support in overcoming adversity and creating positive change for stroke patients and their families.
