    Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

    That cutty was seriously a dinasour! Crazy to think that would be close to a state record in WA, but still small compared to the 40lb cutties that have been caught. Wow the new phone looks good too! Can't wait to try yours out and drop it in the river, I mean, take cool cinematic footage.

    Awesome trip! I’ve read (and dreamed) of that place a lot. I’ve thought of using step ladders in other locations after seeing them used there. Awesome astronomy pictures..with a phone! And what a weather change..but that’s fishing.😂 Thanks Dan! Loved the ending…Fish On! 👍👍🎣

      Thank you Charlie - it's so nuts to see (especially on my first trip)...but hey, keeps you up high and out of the very cold water! Wasn't that crazy? I was stunned when I saw what the iPhone could do...wow. (I'm still kind of in disbelief...Lol). Thanks for making it to the end :)) I appreciate that and your comments. Cheers!

    Awesome video. I've flown over that lake many times as I have 2 kids and 5 grands in Vegas. Losing fish is frustrating, but I tip my hat to the fish. They won that round and maintained their freedom (even though I release them 98% of the time anyway). The Biology of the lake would be interesting, how it supports such large fish. The water is so clear, and no vegetation around to support insect life or shrimp egg laying in shallows. What are they feeding on? Out of curiosity what test leader were you using? All fish slid off the hook and none broken off?

      Their genetics lets them metabolize the same food but get a lot bigger than other CT subspecies. It is a lot like taimen trout in Mongolia!

      Thank you Captain Mike! It's worth a trip over for sure and you are right! I love that part of fly fishing...will I win the battle or will the fish? Total hats off to those that shook me loose (barbless). Pyramid Lake is a rare fishery - very alkaline waters which supports a once thought to be extinct (human extinction by introducing diversion dams in the Truckey River in the 40's) specie of Lahontan Trout (Pilot Peak)...They were discovered decades later in a small stream up on Pilot Peak and the Indian tribe in the area reintroduced them via a hatchery in the 80's and they are now thriving. Some even spawning in the lake naturally. It's worth a read or finding a video explaining it's history. They feed on Kui wui (baitfish) and other aquatic insects (large chironomids)...there are weed beds in the shallows. They come up to the shallows in the fall, winter and spring...then back into the deep when the waters warm back up.

    Cool video of the larger cut, but you need to get a reel that will fight fish because palming the reel will never be successful with big fish.

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Totally agree...it was one of those things I thought of (tighten the drag) only after I hooked into the monster...had to go 'old school' palming to slow it down!

    So all the pictures and stuff I see online are people with ladders, which I've never seen anywhere else. Would you say ladders are important to catch fish at Pyramid Lake?

      @fishingtrippy 2 роки тому +1

      Awesome video by the way

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  2 роки тому +1

      Ladders do help on Pyramid for a couple of reasons. It allows you to reach the edge more easily and keeps you out of the frigid water. It also helps with leverage when you’re casting. You can fish without ladders, just makes it a lot tougher. Best of luck! Cheers!
